The Rebuild Sequence, Start to Finish

He removed the retaining pin, backed the cylinder rod out of the column, and unscrewed the gland nut with the strap wrench. The rod slid out, and the failed rod seal was visible at the front of the gland with a small cut in the primary lip. He cleaned the gland pocket with a lint-free rag, seated the new backup ring first, then the new primary seal, then the new wiper. He reinserted the rod, torqued the gland to spec, reconnected the hydraulic line, and bled the cylinder by cycling the lift three times under no load. Total time from opening the cylinder to closing it was about 90 minutes.
Bleeding the Air Out After a Rebuild
The single most common mistake on a car lift cylinder rebuild is not bleeding the air properly, and it will get you a spongy lift that stops halfway up. After the seal work you cycle the lift multiple times through its full range with no vehicle on it, cracking the bleeder screws at the cylinder or hose fitting to let trapped air escape at the high points. Fluid will burp out with the air the first two cycles and come out smoothly by the fourth. Top off the reservoir once the air is out; if you skip this step, the reservoir will run low next time the lift goes to full height and you will get a sudden drop as the pump ingests air.
