Both work; one is significantly nicer for pan work. The other has advantages we will get to, but if oil pan gaskets are thirty percent of your annual labor, that job should drive the decision.

Every fleet is different, but those are the baseline numbers to work from when you sit down with a spec sheet.
Ceiling height and pad reach for northeast Iowa shops
Northeast Iowa shops range from a 10-foot pole barn in Elkader to a purpose-built 14-foot commercial garage in Cedar Falls. Two-post overhead lifts need a solid 12 feet under the beam, ideally 12 feet 6 inches for tall trucks. Baseplate two-post cuts that to about 10 feet 6 inches. Four-post lifts need less overhead — the vehicle raises to whatever the four columns allow, typically 6 feet 6 inches under the runways, which fits comfortably under a 10-foot ceiling with four to six inches of extra travel available. If your shop has 10-foot ceilings and you want to raise Chevy 3500 duallies to full working height, a four-post is often the only option. If you have twelve-plus feet, you have both options and the choice becomes about workflow. Pad reach is another consideration — long-arm asymmetric two-post kits reach farther for heavy trucks than a stock arm set. Spec the long arms if you have any duallies in the fleet.
Which car lift wins for pan gaskets specifically
For oil pan gasket work exclusively, the two-post asymmetric car lift wins. No runways in the way, full pan swing space, torque wrench access on every bolt. A four-post with a rolling jack can do the job, but you will spend ten to fifteen extra minutes per side working around the crossmembers. Over the course of a year, if you do 40 pan jobs, that is ten to fifteen hours of extra shop time on the four-post configuration. That said, the four-post has real strengths for a fleet — it stores a vehicle on it overnight without hydraulic risk, it accepts a rolling jack for wheels-off brake work, and it lets you drive a work-in-progress truck across the shop without staging. If oil pan work is a large fraction of your labor, buy the two-post first and consider a four-post later. Many northeast Iowa fleets we serve run one of each.
