A car collector in Urbandale, Iowa spent six months planning his four-car garage before he called us for a car lift. He had already drawn out the bay layout — where the compressor would go, where the parts washer would sit, and where the lift would land. What we ended up changing on his plan is the story of this piece. The bay-layout question every collector asks first
The first question is always “where does the lift go?” and the second is “how much room do I need around it?” For a four-post the answer depends on runway length, ramp orientation, and whether you plan to swing doors on the vehicle while it is at height. The Urbandale collector had drawn his lift in the corner of the garage with the ramp facing the overhead door. Practical for drive-on. What he had missed was leaving four feet of clear space on the driver’s side for door swing when the vehicle is at working height — his original plan put the lift too close to the side wall, and he would have had to squeeze past the door every time. We shifted the layout by 30 inches, gave up a little corner storage, and gained a workable driver-side aisle. Small change, huge workflow difference. Where the car lift ends up and why
The final position put the lift centered along the long wall of his 24-by-40-foot garage, with 36 inches of clearance on the driver’s side and 42 inches on the passenger side. Ramp end faced the overhead door for easy drive-on. That geometry gave him room to open both doors on the vehicle at height, walk around the front and back without turning sideways, and still park his daily driver in the adjacent bay when the lift was in storage mode. Ceiling height was 12 feet finished — enough for a 9,000-pound BendPak four-post with a mid-size sedan stored up top. The lift went in the corner of the garage, but the corner was the smart corner — long wall, not the short wall. That is a distinction that matters when you are designing around a car lift instead of retrofitting one into an existing bay. Air lines, drops, and the parts washer placement
Air lines matter more than most collectors expect. The Urbandale garage had a 60-gallon compressor in a utility closet with a single air drop at the workbench. We added two drops: one at the lift bay for the arm restraint air release, air impact use, and rolling-jack pressurization; one at the compressor room for cleaning tools. The parts washer moved from its original planned position (behind the lift) to the opposite wall — behind the lift, the washer would have been unreachable when a car was up. That kind of workflow blocker is easy to miss on a paper plan and easy to fix on a real garage walkthrough. We spent a Saturday morning walking the space with him before ordering equipment. The car lift install itself was a one-day job the following month — anchors, alignment, commissioning, and load test. First-year tire rotations on the new setup
Tire rotation was the collector’s first hands-on use of the lift, three weeks after install. He drove his sports car onto the runways, raised it to 42 inches, and used a floor jack under the front and rear axle points to lift each wheel individually. A rolling jack would have been faster but he did not have one yet. Total time: about 40 minutes for a first attempt. By his fourth rotation he was down to 20 minutes and considering buying a rolling jack. That progression is normal — the first year on any four-post car lift is a learning curve on workflow, not on the equipment itself. He also rotated his muscle car and his daily driver on the same day once — a marathon session that convinced him rolling jacks were worth the investment. He added them at the six-month mark. Overhead clearance and door-opener conflicts
Overhead clearance is where a lot of home-garage installs get in trouble. Garage-door openers hang below the ceiling and often into the path of a raised vehicle. The Urbandale garage had a chain-drive opener mounted at 8 feet, well below the top of a full-rise 9,000-pound four-post. We repositioned the opener to a wall-mount jackshaft-drive unit, which cleared the entire ceiling zone. That swap adds a few hundred dollars but frees up 18 inches of overhead space — often the difference between a lift that fits and one that does not. The collector paid for the swap out of the garage build budget rather than the lift budget, but it was a lift-driven decision. Ceiling height check before you order equipment. Door-opener check before you install. Truss and light-fixture check before you set anchors. That is the pre-install sequence we run every time on a home-garage build.
Storage-vehicle stacking: the case for a four-post
The main reason a collector picks a four-post over a two-post is storage stacking. Park one car up, park a second underneath. On the Urbandale build, the collector stores his muscle car up top through the winter and drives his daily underneath. Total floor space used: one bay. Bay count effectively doubled. That is the multiplier that justifies the four-post car lift price for a lot of home-garage owners. A two-post cannot stack because the vehicle is held by its frame, not sitting on its own wheels — the vehicle would need a stand under it and the columns still take up the same footprint. Four-post drives on, sits on its wheels, safety locks engage, and stays there for six months without issue. That is the pattern we install for collectors every week across central Iowa, and it is what makes the four-post the default recommendation for storage-first buyers.
What we installed for the Urbandale collector
His final setup: BendPak HD-9 four-post, 9,000-pound capacity, standard runway width, standard height, with a set of 4,500-pound rolling jacks added at six months. Air-line drops at the lift bay and compressor room. Jackshaft-drive garage-door opener replacing the original chain-drive. Anchor kit was 3/4-inch Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ2, torqued to 90 foot-pounds into his 4.5-inch pad. Total install time: one day. Ceiling clearance verified before order. Overhead-door conflict resolved.
