A Cedar Falls car collector called us two winters ago about putting a car lift in the pole building he had just finished. Why a Four-Post Was the Right Answer for a Collector
A collector who stores vehicles has a different car lift math than a working shop. He does not need wheels-free access for suspension work every day. He needs to park a second car above a first car without babying the equipment, and he needs to feel confident that a classic Corvette can sit on the lift for six months of winter without the lift settling under load. That is a four-post drive-on story, not a two-post story. We spec’d a 9,000 lb four-post with mechanical safety locks at four inch intervals and a heavy-gauge runway. The lift stores his daily-driver truck on top and lets him work under it once a month for oil changes and inspections. In summer it stores a project car overhead and puts the daily on the floor. The versatility of a four-post is exactly what a collector’s shop wants.
Install Day in a Cedar Falls Pole Building
His pole building was a purpose-built shop with 14-foot side walls and a 20-foot peak. Slab was 5 inches with fiber reinforcement, which is more than enough for a four-post car lift with base plate anchors. We rolled in at 8 AM with the boxed lift on a rollback, unboxed and staged the columns, and had the runways bolted up by noon. Hydraulic power unit went in the driver-side column, cables were routed and tensioned, and safety locks were synchronized by mid-afternoon. Operator training took an hour after the lift was tested. Total install ran seven hours for a two-person crew. He watched the whole thing and asked good questions, and by the end of the day he knew how to set the locks, cycle the cables through their range, and inspect the anchor bolts for the first-week torque check.
The First Six Months: Storage Cycles and Break-In
A brand-new car lift needs 20 to 30 full cycles under load in the first month to seat the cables, break in the equalizer bar, and settle the anchor bolts into the slab. He hit that number in the first three weeks because he kept moving vehicles around between the lift and the floor. At the 30-day mark we came back for the free torque check and cable tension adjustment. Cables had settled slightly and needed a quarter-turn on the equalizer. Anchors were still holding torque. Lock latches on all four columns dropped into their pawls consistently. By month six, the lift was a fixed part of his shop routine. He didn’t think about it anymore, which is exactly what a car lift should become. It should be a background piece of equipment that just works when you need it.
Differential Fluid Service on a Four-Post
His first real service job on the new lift was a differential fluid change on his classic pickup last November. On a four-post car lift with an optional rolling jack in the runway, he was able to lift the truck by the wheels for drive-on convenience, then unload the rear axle with the rolling jack for the fluid drain. That is the exact scenario where a four-post beats a two-post for a home shop. On a two-post, the rear axle is already hanging, but the truck sits farther off the ground and the tech has to work at shoulder height instead of eye level. On a four-post with a rolling jack, the axle is unloaded but the working height is exactly where he wanted it. The whole diff service took him 45 minutes with no drama. Fluid drained clean, gasket sealed, done.
Storage Season: Six Months on the Lift, No Sag
Winter came and the daily-driver truck went on the lift so the classic could park underneath. That vehicle stayed on the lift from mid-November through mid-April. When we checked the cable tension at the spring visit, the equalizer bar had not moved. The runway had not deflected. The anchors were still at torque. That is what a properly sized four-post car lift is supposed to do. It is not the same story on an under-capacity import that gets asked to hold a 6,500 lb pickup for five months. Those lifts sag, cables stretch, and safety locks drop out of pawl. If you are a collector reading this and thinking about long-term storage, size your lift capacity at least 20 percent above your heaviest vehicle. On a 6,500 lb truck, buy an 8,000 lb lift minimum and preferably a 9,000 lb.
Trade-In and Resale Values on a Used Car Lift
Collectors trade up and out more than working shops do. A four-post car lift in good condition, five years old, from a name brand like Rotary or BendPak, holds 60 to 70 percent of its purchase price on the private-party used market. That is a better resale curve than almost any tool in the shop. Cheap import lifts do not hold that value because nobody wants to inherit a lift with cables of unknown history and no dealer support.
