A rural farm shop has a car lift buying problem that suburban and urban shops do not: the building was almost certainly built for something else, the electrical service is often marginal, and the vehicle mix is unusually varied. A Waukee-area farm shop owner called us last spring wanting to install a lift in his existing machine shed. He worked on the family fleet plus the neighbors’ pickups, and CV axle and half-shaft jobs were the reason he wanted a lift in the first place. This article is the compressed version of the pre-purchase checklist we ran with him, which turned into an actual install four months later.

Checklist item one: ceiling height at the truss

Machine sheds and pole barns almost never have flat ceilings. The measurement that matters for a car lift is the height from finished floor to the lowest point of the roof structure inside the anchor footprint, which is usually the truss chord or the purlin on the low side. Wall height is a decoy number, and buyers who buy on wall height end up with a lift that fits the wall and hits the truss. On the Waukee farm shop the wall height was 14 feet and the truss chord at the column position was 12 feet 3 inches. That put a standard two-post configuration on the edge and a low-ceiling configuration clearly inside the range.

The other height measurement to verify is the maximum vehicle-plus-lift stack, which is the lift height plus the tallest vehicle you will service. A stock full-size pickup adds roughly 74 inches to the lift height at maximum extension. A lifted pickup or a Sprinter adds more. For the farm shop’s mix, which included a lifted three-quarter-ton pickup, the stack calculation was the binding constraint. We ended up specifying a low-ceiling unit with a maximum lift height that kept the truck safely under the truss with a foot of margin. That margin is not padding, it is how you avoid a scary moment during a heavy service.

Checklist item two: door swing and equipment flow

Machine sheds often have wide sliding doors rather than roll-up doors, which changes the door-swing calculation. Sliding doors do not eat vertical space the way roll-ups do, which is a small advantage, but they also do not close as tightly, which can matter in the winter for heated shops. The Waukee shed had a 16-foot sliding door on the south wall and a 10-foot sliding door on the east wall. We measured both openings, mapped the vehicle path from each door to the proposed column position, and confirmed that either approach could park a vehicle correctly on the pads.

Equipment flow around a farm-shop lift needs to include the tractor and skid-steer traffic that a rural shop also handles. Column placement had to leave enough aisle for the skid steer to move implements past the lift without dinging a column. On the Waukee shed we ended up positioning the columns 18 feet from the south wall and 8 feet from the east wall, which gave a 12-foot skid-steer aisle down the south side of the building. That kind of layout constraint does not show up on a residential install and is easy to miss if the installer does not think in farm-shop terms.

Checklist item three: slab and anchor spec

Farm shop slabs are the wild card in every rural install. Machine sheds built as machinery storage often have four-inch slabs with minimal or no rebar, which is thin for a two-post car lift anchor pattern. Some sheds have thicker slabs in the working area and thinner slabs where the machinery gets stored. The measurement that matters is thickness and PSI at the exact column footprint, not somewhere else on the floor. On the Waukee shed the working area had a 5-inch slab that tested at 3,900 PSI, which was strong enough. The storage area at the far end was 3-1/2 inches, which would have been rejected if the columns had gone there.

Anchor spec on a farm slab means chemical-set epoxy anchors rather than mechanical expansion anchors. Chemical anchors distribute load through a larger bond area and hold up better when the slab is not perfectly reinforced. On the Waukee install we used the manufacturer’s chemical anchor spec at the full torque value, and the anchor pattern has been solid through eight months of use. If your farm shop slab is under four inches or tests below 3,500 PSI at the column position, we will not install on that slab. We have declined installs where the slab spec was not adequate, and we recommend a saw-cut and re-pour before proceeding.

Checklist item four: electrical service

A car lift motor needs a dedicated circuit, and most farm sheds do not have one. Single-phase 220-volt at 30 amps is the residential standard, and it is what the Waukee shed had after a small upgrade we recommended. The existing electrical panel had a 100-amp main and enough spare capacity to add the dedicated lift circuit without triggering a full service upgrade. That is not always the case. Some machine sheds run on a 60-amp subpanel from the main house, which is inadequate for a lift motor plus lighting and compressor load.

If your farm shed’s electrical is not up to the demand, the pre-purchase checklist includes a call to a licensed electrician for an upgrade estimate. On the Waukee build the electrical upgrade was under a thousand dollars and took a Saturday morning. That is a small number in the context of a full car lift install and a big number if you skip it and then damage the lift motor from an underfed circuit. Always verify the electrical service before you sign the purchase order. Lift dealers who do not ask about electrical service on the initial call are dealers who have not installed enough units in rural buildings.

Checklist item five: CV axle and half-shaft work

CV axle and half-shaft replacement is the job that convinces most farm shop owners they need a lift. The vehicle has to be at working height with the wheels hanging free, and the tech needs clean access to the outer joint and inner CV housing on both sides. A two-post configuration is the right tool for this. The Waukee owner’s vehicle mix included multiple front-wheel-drive daily drivers and a few all-wheel-drive crossovers, all of which see CV axle service in the 100,000 to 150,000 mile range. That is a job he does three or four times a year for the family fleet alone, plus whatever the neighbors bring in.

On a low-ceiling two-post the CV axle job runs the same as on a standard-height two-post, just with slightly less headroom at maximum lift height. That trade-off has no meaningful impact on the CV work itself. The tech’s shoulders and arms are the constraint, not the vehicle’s underbody clearance. On the Waukee install the owner ran his first CV axle job on the new lift about three weeks after commissioning, replacing the passenger-side shaft on his daughter’s crossover in under two hours. That was faster than he had ever done that job before, and he attributed the difference entirely to the working posture.

Checklist item six: budget and financing structure

Rural buyers usually have less flexibility on cash timing than corporate buyers do. Farm income arrives seasonally, and a car lift purchase in March or April lands well before the fall harvest paycheck. Our zero-percent-APR twelve-month financing with a ninety-day payment deferral works well for rural buyers because it lines up the first real payment with post-harvest cash flow. The Waukee owner used exactly that structure, which meant his first payment landed in late fall after the corn had moved. That kind of scheduling flexibility is not always available at other dealers, so ask specifically about it before you sign anywhere.

Budget-wise, the total install for a rural farm shop lands within a range that depends on the ceiling and electrical work required. The Waukee build was on the lower end of that range because the shed’s existing structure did not need significant modification. A shed that needs a slab re-pour or a substantial electrical upgrade will land higher.
