A tire and alignment shop owner up in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us after a scare he did not want to repeat. A tech had just started a wheel bearing job on a mid-size crossover when one of the front arm restraints released and the arm rotated an inch under load. Nothing bad happened, but everyone in the bay felt it. He wanted us to come out, look at every car lift in his shop, and give him a safety-first walkthrough his whole crew could reference. This is the walkthrough we built out of that visit, focused specifically on arm restraints and safety cam engagement, which are the two systems that stand between a routine service and a very bad day.

What an Arm Restraint Actually Does

An arm restraint is a mechanical lock at the arm-pivot pin on a two-post lift that keeps the swing arm from rotating out of position once the vehicle is lifted off the ground. The arm restraint engages automatically as the arm takes load, and it disengages either by a foot pedal, a hand release, or automatically when the arms are fully lowered, depending on the specific design. The purpose is simple: prevent the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle if the pad slips or the operator bumps the arm.

The failure mode the tire shop tech experienced is uncommon on well-maintained equipment and very common on neglected equipment. Arm restraints are a wear item. The gear teeth on the restraint plate get chipped and packed with grease over time, and the release lever springs weaken with age. A restraint that visually looks fine can still fail to engage the last tooth of gear travel under a shock load. Every ALI-certified car lift we install has documented arm restraint inspection intervals, and we teach the whole shop crew how to verify engagement before every lift.

The Ten-Second Restraint Check Every Tech Should Do

The check we drilled into the Iowa Great Lakes shop crew takes about ten seconds per arm and it should happen every time an arm gets positioned under a vehicle. First, swing the arm into place against the pad point. Second, lift the vehicle just enough to load the arm, roughly four to six inches off the ground. Third, physically push and pull on the free end of the arm with a firm hand. It should not move. If it moves at all, drop the vehicle, disengage the arm, and inspect the restraint mechanism.

The check catches three specific failures. It catches a restraint that failed to engage because grease packed the gear teeth. It catches a restraint that engaged on an intermediate tooth and can still slip under load. And it catches a worn pivot pin that is letting the arm walk under torque even with a good restraint. All three of these failures are silent until they matter, and all three of them are fully visible in the ten-second check. The whole crew adopted this and their comfort level in the bays went up noticeably.

Safety Cam Engagement: How the Column Lock Works

Separate from the arm restraints is the column safety cam system, which is the primary load-holding mechanism after the vehicle is at working height. A two-post car lift is not supposed to hold load on hydraulic pressure alone. Once the vehicle is at the height the tech wants to work at, the operator lowers the lift onto the nearest safety-cam notch on both columns, and the mechanical locks take the load. This is the fundamental safety design of every commercial two-post.

The audible cue matters. When a two-post lowers into its locks, you should hear two distinct clicks, one from each column, as the cams drop into their notches. If you hear only one click, or a click and a delayed second click, the load may not be evenly distributed across both locks. The correct response is to raise the lift a few inches, lower again, and confirm both locks engage simultaneously. Teaching every tech in the shop to listen for that double-click is the single highest-leverage safety habit we teach, and it costs nothing.

Wheel Bearing Service Load Path and Why It Matters Here

Wheel bearing service is a specific safety concern on a two-post because pulling a wheel changes the load path through the arm. The vehicle no longer sits fully on its suspension, and any pressure the tech applies to the hub, whether pulling a race or torquing a spindle nut, transfers as a horizontal or rotational force into the arm. That is exactly the load direction the arm restraint is designed to resist, and it is also the direction that finds a marginal restraint faster than any other service.

Our recommendation to the Iowa Great Lakes tire shop was to run the ten-second restraint check every time before starting a wheel bearing service, without exception, and to reload the safety cams at the specific working height before removing the wheel. We also recommend positioning the vehicle so the tech is working with the pull direction, not against it, when applying torque to a stuck race. Small habits like these turn wheel bearing work from a stress event into a routine one on any car lift.

Arm Restraint Maintenance Intervals and What Wears Out

Arm restraints get inspected at every annual safety inspection we do, and we recommend a monthly visual check by the shop crew. The monthly check is quick: pop the restraint cover, wipe the gear teeth clean of grease, verify the release lever springs back sharply, and look for any obvious chipped teeth or bent components. Replace anything that looks marginal, because the parts are cheap and the alternative is not.

The gear plate itself is the most common wear item on older lifts. On a two-post that sees 15 to 20 lift cycles a day, we typically see gear plate replacement needed somewhere in the year seven to ten range. The release lever springs weaken faster, sometimes as soon as year five in a shop that runs a lot of light-duty cycles. Neither part is expensive, and we stock them for every major brand we service. What is expensive is not replacing them and finding out the hard way that a marginal restraint let go on your busiest bay.

What Modern Certified Lifts Add That Older Lifts Do Not

The tire shop we visited had a mix of lift ages, some pushing twenty years old and some under five. The modern ALI-certified lifts had a specific feature the older ones lacked: automatic arm restraint engagement with a positive-lock indicator you can see at a glance. That indicator is a small flag or LED that shows the restraint is fully engaged, not partially engaged on an intermediate tooth. It is a small design change and it removes an entire class of ambiguous-engagement failures.

For any shop upgrading its bays, we strongly recommend the current-generation certified lifts specifically because of these safety indicators and the improved cam geometry on both the restraints and the column locks. The cost premium over a bare-minimum lift is modest and the safety improvement is measurable. Building a Safety-First Shop Culture Around Lift Use

The tire shop owner asked us at the end of our visit what one change would have the biggest safety impact. Our answer was cultural, not equipment: make the ten-second restraint check and the two-click cam engagement audible on every single lift cycle, and make it clear that any tech who skips them is done for the day. When the whole crew treats the checks as non-negotiable, the equipment stops being the risk and becomes the safety net it was designed to be.

Everything else we recommend flows downstream from that. Annual professional inspections with written reports. Monthly self-checks by the crew. Immediate lock-out if any restraint or cam behaves oddly. Replacement of wear items on interval, not on failure. That is the entire safety program in one paragraph, and it costs almost nothing to implement.
