Understand the Cable System Before You Buy

Every two-post and four-post car lift uses steel wire rope, commonly called cable, to equalize the two sides of the lift so that both columns rise and fall at the same rate. The cables are not the primary load-bearing element on a two-post (that is the hydraulic cylinder), but they are the primary load-bearing element on a four-post. Understanding which type of lift you are buying tells you how much cable maintenance actually matters over the life of the equipment.

For a farm shop that plans to do a mix of pickup service, wheel work, and occasional heavier vehicles, the cable inspection habit is the same regardless of lift style. Inspect the cables every year for broken outer strands, corrosion, and diameter reduction. On a well-maintained lift kept indoors in a heated farm shop, cable life is typically ten years or more. On a lift that sees outdoor use or humid unheated storage, cable life shortens materially. That reality shapes the maintenance budget you should plan on when you write the check.

Ask About Replacement Cable Availability at Point of Purchase

This is the specific question that separates a good long-term purchase from a bad one, and it is easy to ask. Before you buy any car lift, call the seller and ask them what a replacement cable set costs, what the lead time is, and whether they stock the exact size for the model you are considering. A responsive answer with a specific dollar range and a lead time of days rather than months tells you the brand has a real parts pipeline. A vague answer, or an answer that involves overseas shipping, tells you the brand does not.

Point four: check equalizer tension across all four corners at working height on a four-post, or check the equalizer on the specific style of two-post you have. Point five: cycle the lift full stroke and look for any asynchronous deck or arm movement, which indicates cable stretch. Point six: inspect the safety ladder cam engagement at every notch. Six points, roughly thirty minutes of work per lift, and the payoff is a car lift that runs another year with confidence. This is exactly the annual inspection we perform on every service call.

Match the Lift Style to Farm Shop Work

Install Quality and Anchor Torque Documentation

The two items that matter most are column plumb and anchor torque. We spec anchor torque per the manufacturer’s engineering documents, log the reading on each of the twelve anchors on a typical two-post, and hand the log to the shop owner at the end of the install. That written record matters for warranty and for the tech who works on the lift ten years from now.

Slab quality drives anchor performance. A six-inch slab of 4,500 PSI concrete with rebar is the standard we recommend for a commercial-capacity two-post in a new-build farm shop. Existing slabs get evaluated on the day of install. If the slab is marginal, we can specify remediation, whether that is a slab cut and pour or a shift in lift location to where the slab is thicker. What we do not do is bolt a heavy-duty lift onto a slab that will not hold the anchors, because the failure mode there is not a slow degradation, it is a sudden pull-out event.
