An RV and trailer service shop in east-central Iowa opened a second bay last year specifically to store customer travel trailers over the winter season, and they called us in early spring to spec a car lift that would handle both the storage use and the occasional wheel-off service on the passenger vehicles the shop owners drive. This is the first-year story of that install, from the concrete slab conversation on day one through the first annual service visit twelve months later. It is written for any Iowa shop owner about to walk the same path, because the small decisions on the front end shape the twenty-year experience.

Month One: The Slab Conversation That Set Everything Else Up

The shop owners called us before their new bay slab was poured, which is the ideal timing on any car lift install. Their contractor had spec’d a four-inch slab with fiber reinforcement, which is fine for a warehouse floor but not enough for a commercial lift install. We asked them to bump it to six inches with a rebar mat on 18-inch centers, 4,500 PSI concrete minimum. The material cost delta was modest and the contractor accommodated the change without pushback.

The specific reason the slab matters is anchor performance. Wedge anchors need continuous sound concrete at full embedment depth (four inches minimum for the 3/4-inch anchors we use), and a thin slab with fiber reinforcement does not give the anchor bite. Poured correctly, the slab becomes a twenty-year foundation you never think about again. Poured wrong, it becomes a re-pour project the first time you notice a column shift under load. We have inherited the fixing job on both scenarios, and the pre-pour conversation is always cheaper.

Month Two: Install Day and What Actually Got Delivered

Install day landed six weeks after order, which is normal for the specific four-post we specified. The freight truck arrived with the columns, cross-rails, decks, cable system, and hydraulic power unit crated on two pallets. We had a two-tech crew on-site, and the physical install from freight to fully operational was one long day, about nine hours, including the anchor drilling, column setup, deck assembly, cable stringing, cylinder connection, and initial cycle testing.

The specific model we installed was a 14,000 pound drive-on four-post with 26-foot rails, which gives the shop enough deck length to hold either a full-size crew-cab pickup or a mid-length travel trailer for winter storage. The wider stance and higher capacity made it a better fit than the 9K unit the shop initially considered, because the trailer load with tongue weight puts a lot more downforce on the front rail than a passenger sedan does. The 14K unit had the capacity headroom to handle both the storage case and the service case without stress.

Month Three Through Six: Daily Operations and Early Wear-In

The first six months of car lift ownership are the wear-in period, and there are specific things to watch for. The hydraulic system typically needs a bleed and top-off around the two-week mark as trapped air works its way out of the lines. The cables settle in and the equalizer may need a small tension adjustment around the one-month mark. We include both of these follow-up visits in every new install we do in east-central Iowa, and neither one takes more than a couple of hours.

The shop’s day-to-day workflow settled in fast. They store trailers on the deck for the six-month winter season, then use the lift for occasional passenger vehicle service the rest of the year. That specific split is easy on the equipment, because it means the cables are not cycling constantly but they are also not sitting static under load year-round the way a pure-storage lift would. It is close to an ideal duty cycle for cable life and cylinder life, and we expect this specific lift to run twenty years or more with routine care.

Month Six: Concrete Slab Post-Install Check

Six months into a new car lift install, we come back and check the slab around the anchor points for any hairline cracking or heave, which are the two things that show up early on a slab that was marginal for the load. This install showed nothing, which was the expected outcome from the six-inch pour with rebar. The anchors torqued back to spec cleanly, and there was no visible slab movement around any of the sixteen anchor points across the four columns.

The comparison worth making is against installs we have inherited on thinner slabs. A four-inch fiber-reinforced slab often shows hairline radial cracking around anchor points within six months of a commercial-capacity install. That cracking is usually not immediately dangerous but it is a real signal that the slab is stressed, and it typically means the anchors will need to be re-drilled to a new location within a few years. The pre-pour slab conversation saves that entire chain of remediation, and it is the specific reason we make the ask up front.

Month Nine: First Real Service Call and What It Looked Like

Nine months in, the shop called us about a slight noise on lowering, a light clicking that had not been there at commissioning. We diagnosed it as a sheave that needed lubrication (missed on the shop’s own quarterly maintenance schedule), and we handled it in a 45-minute visit. The lift never left service. This is exactly the kind of small issue that a responsive local installer catches and fixes before it becomes a real problem, and it is one of the most important reasons to buy from an installer you can actually call.

We used that visit to also walk the shop crew through the specific maintenance schedule for this car lift model, including cable lubrication intervals, hydraulic fluid check, and the annual safety inspection. The shop had a maintenance log posted next to the lift by this point, which we handed them at commissioning and which they had actually been keeping updated. That kind of shop discipline pays back many times over across twenty years of ownership, and we make a point of setting it up on every new install.

Month Twelve: The Full First-Year Annual Inspection

The full first-year inspection is a two-hour visit that walks through every safety-critical item on the lift. We check all four cables for broken strands and diameter reduction, all four sheaves for wear-groove depth, the equalizer tension, the hydraulic cylinder for external leaks or seal seep, the safety ladder cam engagement on both columns, the anchor torque on all sixteen anchors, and the electrical connections at the power unit. We hand the shop a written report at the end of the visit.

This shop’s first-year report came back completely clean. No cable issues, no sheave wear beyond normal seating, no seal seep, no anchor movement, and no electrical concerns. That is the expected outcome for a well-installed lift with regular self-maintenance during its first year, and it is the outcome we plan for on every east-central Iowa install. The report goes into the shop’s maintenance file, and it becomes the baseline for the year-two inspection when we come back next spring.

What This First Year Cost and What Comes Next

The all-in cost for this specific install through the first year, including equipment, freight, install, two follow-up visits, and the first annual inspection, landed in the mid-tier range for a commercial-capacity four-post. That is more than a bare-pallet purchase from an online importer, and it is significantly less than a full turnkey install from a national chain. The value sits in the fact that the shop knows their lift, knows their installer, and has a clean written record of every service touch across year one.

Year two picks up with a shorter check-in at six months and another annual inspection at twelve. The maintenance budget across a typical twenty-year ownership is dominated by preventive service (which is small) plus one cable set replacement in the year seven to ten range and one cylinder seal service somewhere in the year twelve to fifteen range. That is the entire predictable maintenance timeline for a well-installed commercial car lift, and it is the timeline we plan against for every east-central Iowa RV shop and general service shop we work with.
