Myth 1: any garage two post lift will handle an EV
The single most common mistake we correct is the assumption that a lift rated at 10,000 lb is fine for an EV because the vehicle weighs 6,500. Weight is not the whole story on a battery-electric vehicle. The mass is concentrated low and centered – the whole skateboard sits between the wheels – and the balance changes what your arms have to do.
On an F-150 Lightning or a Rivian, the manufacturer lifting points sit outboard of the traditional pinch-weld locations. On a Tesla Model S the pucks sit inboard. If your arms cannot reach those points cleanly with the pads centered, you have three options: buy pucks, buy a longer arm, or lift the wrong point and hope. That last one is how a shop we know in the region ended up on the phone with the manufacturer and their insurance carrier the same afternoon.

Myth 2: ALI Gold is a marketing sticker
It is not. ALI Gold is a third-party certification issued through ETL that says the lift meets ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for design, testing, and manufacture. Every piece – the columns, the arms, the safety locks, the cables, the power unit, the shipping documentation – is tested to spec.
For an EV specialty shop, ALI Gold matters for three concrete reasons. First, your insurance carrier will ask – and the answer is worth 10 to 20 percent on your annual liability premium in many cases. Second, your annual Iowa state safety inspection expects it – and inspectors know which lifts have the label and which do not. Third, when you sell the shop or a lift in ten years, ALI Gold doubles the resale.

Myth 3: state inspections do not care about the lift
They do. Iowa’s annual lift safety inspection, done through an ALI-certified inspector, checks the columns, cables, equalizers, safety locks, hydraulic lines, arm restraints, and the anchor pattern. An EV shop that fails inspection cannot legally lift customer cars until it is fixed.
What trips EV shops up is the arm-restraint pin count. Restraint pins wear from repeated in-and-out. If your techs are pulling arms in on every lift because EV skateboards demand different positions than a Chevy Silverado, the restraint pins wear faster. A three-year-old lift in an EV shop can show the wear of a seven-year-old lift in a general service bay.
We tell every northwest Iowa EV specialist to swap arm-restraint pins on a two-year cadence, not the industry default of five. It costs a few hundred dollars and it is the single most common finding we see on annual inspections. Myth 4: symmetric arms fit every EV skateboard
Symmetric-arm lifts are the cheapest to buy and the fastest to lift a truck on because both arms are the same length. For EV work, symmetric usually is not enough. The skateboard mounting points on a Tesla, a Rivian, and a Lightning are all in different locations, and the vehicle weight bias moves front-to-rear depending on drive configuration.
Three-stage arms telescope in and out to reach every one of those points. On a Tesla Model 3 with inboard pucks, they retract to the inner mounts. On a Rivian R1T with outboard skateboard bolts, they extend past the pinch-welds to reach the frame. On a Lightning, they land in the middle.
An EV shop we work with in northwest Iowa tried to run a symmetric 10K for six months before they gave up and traded it in on a three-stage. Their tech was pulling and repositioning arms on every single lift, and it was killing throughput. If you are outfitting a new EV shop today, do not save the $600 on symmetric arms – it will cost you far more in labor by month three.
Myth 5: a home-garage lift is fine for a working EV shop
The line between a home-garage lift and a commercial-duty lift is real, and EV shops sit on the commercial side even if the shop is small. Home-garage lifts are engineered for maybe 200 lift cycles a year – about four a week. A working EV shop hits that in a single busy day.
The differences show up in the cables, the power unit, and the duty cycle of the safety-lock latches. Home-duty lifts use lighter cables and less robust locks because they are not expected to see daily use. Push them past their duty cycle and you get premature cable stretch, sticky lock releases, and hydraulic seals that let go before year five.
Every garage two post lift we quote to an EV shop is a commercial-duty design – even if the shop owner is a one-tech operation. The premium is small ($1,500 to $3,000 typical over a home-duty equivalent) and the reliability difference across a 10-year lift life is enormous.
What we actually recommend for northwest Iowa EV specialists
For a single-bay northwest Iowa EV specialty shop working on Teslas, Rivians, and Lightnings, our standard recommendation is a Rotary SPO12 with three-stage arms, ALI Gold certification, and manufacturer stack pucks for the EV lift points. It is a 12,000 lb clear-floor overhead lift with plenty of reserve capacity for the heaviest Lightning fully loaded.
For a two-bay shop, we quote two SPO12s or one SPO12 plus one Challenger CL10. Standardizing on one brand simplifies parts stocking and technician training, but a mix works fine because both brands use similar arm-restraint and safety-lock architectures.

A standard SPO12 install on 4-inch slab in a shop with 12-foot ceilings runs one day. How to prep your shop for the annual inspection
Two weeks before your annual state safety inspection, do this walkthrough on every garage two post lift in the shop. Look at the equalizer cables at the sheaves for fraying or corrosion. Cycle both safety locks under load and listen for a clean click. Extend and retract every arm to check restraint-pin engagement. Check the hydraulic power-unit reservoir level and look for weeping fittings on the hoses. Verify the ALI Gold plate is still legible on the column.
