What a garage two post lift actually costs, tier by tier
The lift itself is the biggest line item, but not the only one, and the tiers matter more than the sticker. For a heavy-duty truck shop, the four tiers we quote are 12K (light service trucks), 15K (dually pickups, class 3-4), 18K to 20K (class 4-5 medium duty), and 30K (single-axle straight trucks, small tow trucks).
The 12K tier lands in the low five figures for the lift alone. The 15K bumps up modestly. The 18K to 20K category runs meaningfully higher – the columns are physically bigger, the cables are heavier gauge, and the power unit doubles in capacity. The 30K tier is roughly double the 15K tier because you are effectively buying twice the lift.
Where owners get surprised is that the tier one down from what they need almost never saves real money after freight and install. Install labor, anchors, and slab work
Install for a heavy-duty garage two post lift runs a full day for a 15K on good existing slab, and closer to two days for an 18K or 30K. That labor covers unloading, laying out the anchor pattern with a laser, drilling and epoxying anchors, standing the columns, plumbing the hydraulics, running the equalizer cables, cycling the safety locks under test load, and handing the paperwork over for the initial ALI-compliant inspection.
Anchor bolts are a real line item on heavy-duty lifts. A 30K uses eight to 12 anchors per column at longer embedment depth than a 10K uses. Epoxy is not optional at that capacity – and the epoxy alone runs a few hundred dollars per lift.
Slab work is the wildcard. If your existing slab is not 6 inches, 3,000 psi minimum for an 18K or larger, we will not anchor the lift. That means a slab saw-cut, tear-out, and repour before install can begin. Concrete work in eastern Nebraska in the busy months runs several thousand dollars and adds two weeks to the timeline. That number lives outside the lift quote and is the single biggest hidden cost we warn heavy-duty shops about.
Freight and delivery to eastern Nebraska
Heavy-duty lifts do not ship parcel – they ship on a flatbed or step-deck. Freight from the Rotary or Challenger factory to a common-carrier terminal in Omaha, Lincoln, or Norfolk runs several hundred dollars for a 12K and closer to $1,000 for a 30K. From the terminal to your shop, you either pick up with a rollback or we deliver with our own truck.

Cable inspection intervals: the number nobody tells you
Every garage two post lift runs equalizer cables that synchronize the two columns and carry a real fraction of the load. Cables stretch, fray, and corrode over time. Ignoring them is how a lift ends up out of level – or dropping a load.
The inspection interval nobody tells you is annually for daily-use commercial shops, and every six months if you are running class 4-5 medium-duty daily. Manufacturers publish five years for cable replacement under normal use. On a heavy-duty truck shop where every load is at or near capacity, that number is more realistically three to four years.
A cable replacement is not scary money – a set for a 15K runs a few hundred dollars, and for a 30K a bit more. The labor is a half-day if you catch it early. The expensive scenario is catching it late, when the equalizer sheave grooves have worn and the sheaves need replacement too. That is a full-day job and a much bigger parts bill. Annual state inspection prep and its hidden costs
Nebraska does not have a statewide lift inspection mandate the way some states do, but insurance carriers and OEM warranty programs almost always require annual ALI-compliant inspection. That inspection runs a few hundred dollars per lift by a certified inspector.
Prep before the inspector arrives saves a callback fee. Check equalizer cables for fraying, cycle both safety locks under load, extend and retract each arm to verify restraint-pin engagement, verify the hydraulic reservoir is topped and there are no weeping hose fittings, and make sure the ALI Gold plate is still legible on the column.
The hidden cost of a failed inspection is downtime. A heavy-duty truck shop that cannot legally lift a truck for two weeks while parts ship is losing thousands per day in labor billing. When to replace cables versus when to reweave
Reweaving is not a real option. Cables are one-piece, factory-swaged with load-rated ends, and there is no legitimate field repair. If a cable is fraying at the sheave, the answer is replace both cables as a pair, replace the sheaves if the grooves are worn, and re-tension the pair to spec.
Replace both cables together even if only one shows wear. They stretch as a pair and wear at similar rates. Replacing one leaves you out of level within weeks and shortens the life of the new cable.
Budget for a full cable set every three to four years on a heavy-duty lift and every five to six on a light-service lift. Add the sheaves at year eight or when you first see groove wear, whichever comes first. Add the hydraulic hoses at year 10. Add the power-unit seals when they weep. Add the arm-restraint pins as they wear.
None of these are big single-line expenses – they are the ongoing hygiene of a working garage two post lift. Skip any of them and the lift starts costing more than it makes.
The total-cost view over a 10-year lift life
Pull it all together across a 10-year life and a well-chosen 18K heavy-duty lift costs less per shop hour than almost any other piece of equipment on the floor. The lift is a large number up front, but amortized across 10 years and thousands of billable hours, the per-hour cost is small.
What blows the number up is picking wrong at year zero and paying to unwind it at year three. A 12K bought to save money when the shop actually needs a 15K, off-brand cables that stretch in year two, a slab that was not prepped and had to be poured at year one – those are the costs that hurt.
