Garage Two Post Lift: A Farm Shop Buyer’s Checklist

A garage two post lift is the single biggest floor-space decision a rural farm shop makes, and near Davenport we field calls every week from owners weighing a used listing against a new install. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and we install, service, and stock parts for every major two-post brand from Rotary to Challenger to BendPak. This piece is the pre-purchase checklist we hand farm shop owners doing restoration and metal work in eastern Iowa – what to ask, what to skip, and where used lifts genuinely make sense.

Why a garage two post lift changes what a rural shop can take on

Restoration, welding under a truck frame, dropping a transmission, running a floor jack – all of it slows down when you are on creepers. A garage two post lift raises everything to chest height and gives you back the two most valuable things in the shop: your back and your daylight.

For a farm shop east of Davenport, the calculus is different than a dealership. You are not chasing 50 flat-rate oil changes a day. You are chasing one project at a time – a grain-truck body swap, an F-350 frame straightening, a Bronco restoration that has been sitting six months. What you need is capacity, arm reach, and confidence that the lift will still be running in 15 years when the next generation walks into the barn.

The right lift makes that possible. The wrong one turns into a rust monument in the corner. We have seen both. In this checklist we walk through the exact questions we ask every farm-shop caller before we quote, in the same order we ask them.

Used vs new: the honest math for a Davenport farm shop

New versus used is not a moral choice – it is a total-cost-of-ownership question. A well-kept, name-brand used lift from a shop closing down can be a great buy. A tired 20-year-old off-brand missing the arm restraints and half its safety stickers is a project that will cost more than a new lift before it moves anything.

The used market breaks into three tiers. Tier one is a five-year-old Rotary or Challenger with paperwork, cables in date, and a known install history – often 40 to 55 percent of new. Tier two is an unknown-history off-brand with no cable date and no ALI label – a coin flip. Tier three is anything sold as-is, disassembled, in a barn. Walk away unless the price is scrap.

For a Davenport farm shop that will actually work another 20 years, we usually push toward new – the freight and install savings on used rarely pencil out once you replace cables, safety latches, and equalizers. But when a real tier-one lift shows up, it can be the smartest money you spend all year. Our Rotary vs Challenger comparison covers which brands hold their used value best.

The 12-point pre-purchase checklist we hand every buyer

Whether you are eyeing a used listing or a new quote, run every candidate through this list before you write a check.

First, capacity – 9K, 10K, 12K, or 15K. Second, arm type – symmetric, asymmetric, or three-stage. Third, overhead or baseplate. Fourth, column height and ceiling clearance. Fifth, drive-through width. Sixth, single-point or dual-point safety release. Seventh, ALI Gold certification – the big one. Eighth, cable age and condition. Ninth, hydraulic hose condition and any weeping fittings. Tenth, anchor bolts and slab thickness at the install location. Eleventh, arm-restraint condition and lock function. Twelfth, parts availability for that specific model ten years out.

We hand this to every rural shop owner who calls us. If a used lift passes all 12, it is a genuine buy. If it fails on ALI certification, cable age, or arm restraints, you are looking at a rebuild, not a lift. On a new garage two post lift, capacity, arms, and column height are the buyer’s choice; everything else is baked in by the manufacturer if you stick to the brands we trust.

Capacity, arm type, and asymmetric versus symmetric

Capacity first. For a farm shop doing restoration and mid-duty truck work, we rarely quote below 10,000 lb. A 9K asymmetric is fine for cars and half-tons. A 10K or 12K opens up three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, dually pickups with a full tank, and light medium-duty. A 15K starts to make sense if you do heavy service trucks or single-axle grain trucks.

Arms are where restoration shops get tripped up. Symmetric arms are equal length front-to-back – good for trucks and equal-weight vehicles. Asymmetric arms are shorter in front, letting the driver’s door swing on a passenger car. For a mixed farm shop, three-stage arms give you both worlds: the front arm reaches back like a symmetric when you have a truck, and telescopes short when you have a Bronco.

A BendPak XPR-10S is a 10,000 lb symmetric clear-floor with drop-end pads – a fine rural-shop lift when you are mostly on trucks. For a genuine mixed-fleet farm shop we more often quote a Rotary SPO12 or Challenger CL10 with three-stage arms. See our arm-style guide for the head-to-head.

What restoration and metal work actually demand from a lift

Restoration and metalwork put demands on a garage two post lift that a general-service bay never sees. You will grind under it, weld under it, run a plasma cutter within four feet of the columns, and swing a floor jack under the pinch welds a hundred times per project.

Three things matter more than they would in a light-service bay. First, arm-pad protection – the drop-end pads take the hits, and cheap pads mushroom out inside a year. Second, hose routing – the hydraulic lines on a clear-floor lift run overhead, and welding sparks find them. Third, safety-lock reliability – you will leave a truck on the locks for hours while you weld, and you need the locks engaging fully every time, not sticking half-engaged.

This is the case for spending real money on brand, not chasing the cheapest 10K on the market. A Rotary or Challenger clear-floor with proper cable routing and full ALI Gold certification will still lock cleanly after 20 years of welding sparks. A no-name lift often does not make it to year eight before something we cannot get parts for lets go.

Red flags on used listings we tell people to walk away from

We have seen a lot of used listings from central Iowa up to the Dakotas, and the same red flags keep showing. Here is the list we tell every buyer to memorize before they drive an hour to look at a lift.

Missing ALI label – walk. Rust bloom on the equalizer cables or fraying near the sheaves – walk. Bent or field-repaired columns – walk. Missing arm restraints or restraint pins – walk. Safety locks that will not engage cleanly – walk. A hydraulic power unit that has been rebuilt by the seller without paperwork – walk. Any lift where the seller cannot produce the original install manual, cable service records, or the model tag stamped on a plate – walk.

None of these are picky perfectionist standards. Every one has shown up on a lift that later failed inspection or dropped a load. We install used lifts for customers all the time – but only lifts that pass every one of those checks. If a seller pushes back on any of them, that tells you everything about how the lift was maintained.

How we quote and install a garage two post lift near Davenport

Once you have picked a lift, the actual quote and install is straightforward. Call us at 800-674-9302 or email founder@autoliftserv.com with the model, ceiling height at the install location, and a photo or measurement of the slab. Slab thickness is the one thing we cannot solve remotely – 4-inch, 3,000 psi minimum for a 10K lift, 5-inch for a 12K. Anything thinner and we will talk about a slab pour first. Read our slab requirements article before you measure.

For a farm shop near Davenport, we drop-ship the lift on a common-carrier truck (freight terminal in the Quad Cities), then send our installers with anchor drills, a laser, and torque specs. A standard 10K install on good slab is a one-day job. A 15K or a tricky route (low ceiling, tight overhead door) runs a day and a half.

Everything ships from our Ames warehouse or direct from Rotary and Challenger factories. Cables, arm restraints, and lock kits stay in stock, so a garage two post lift installed near Davenport this week has first-year parts available the same day you call. That is the whole reason we do this locally.
