Arm Restraints: What They Actually Do
On a 2-post lift, the arms swing out from the column to reach factory lift points. Under load, the natural tendency of an arm is to pivot back inward and let the vehicle drift. Arm restraints are the geared mechanism at the base of each arm that locks it in the position you set. On a quality home lift the restraint is a stamped-steel gear stack with a spring-loaded pawl. On a bargain lift it can be a friction plate that wears smooth in eighteen months. When we do a wheel bearing job on a family-owned lift that has been in daily service for fifteen years, the reason it is still safe to work under is the arm restraint engaging every single time the arms bear load. If a restraint clicks weakly or slips when you tug on the arm, that lift is not ready for work.
Safety Cam Engagement and Why Pitch Matters
Both 2-post and 4-post lifts use mechanical locks — safety cams — that catch a stack of teeth as the carriage rises. The pitch of those teeth is the distance between locking positions. On a well-engineered lift, the pitch runs roughly every two to two and a half inches. That means you can set a vehicle at nearly any working height you want. On some import lifts the pitch is six inches or more, so you get “halfway down” or “all the way up” and not much between. For wheel bearing work you want the vehicle waist high, and a two-inch pitch is what makes that possible. Every home car lift for garage duty should have close-pitch safety cams. If a spec sheet does not list the locking-position interval, that is worth calling out before you buy.
Real Home Car Lift for Garage Dimensions
A standard 9,000 lb 2-post overhead needs roughly twelve feet of ceiling clearance. A baseplate version drops that requirement to about eleven feet. A 4-post 8,000 lb storage lift typically needs eleven to twelve feet if you plan to park a full-size SUV up top. Width between columns matters just as much as height. Most family-owned garages we visit in eastern Nebraska have twelve- to fourteen-foot-wide bays. That fits a 2-post; it is tight for a mid-rise scissor. Every home car lift for garage install we do starts with three numbers: ceiling height, garage door opening height, and slab thickness. If any one of those is off, the whole plan changes.
The Concrete Question Nobody Asks Twice
Manufacturer specs typically call for four inches of 3,000 psi concrete for most home-garage lifts. Some models want four and a quarter or five inches for heavier ratings. A poured slab in a pole barn or attached garage that is under four inches is not automatically disqualified, but it puts more load on the anchor and reduces safety margin. On the Iowa-Nebraska border most of the pole-barn shops we install in were poured with four inches over compacted base. That works. If your slab is old, cracked, or thin, we saw-cut and pour a lift pad rather than gamble on an anchor pull-out. Wheel Bearing Work: What the Lift Has to Do
Wheel bearings are one of the more demanding home shop jobs. You need the wheel off, the caliper hanging, and the hub accessible — often with a slide-hammer or press setup right at the hub. That means the lift has to hold the vehicle at chest height and stay there while you swing a mallet. It means the arms cannot creep. It means the safety cams must engage before you crawl under. A family-owned garage running wheel bearings weekly needs a 2-post with real arm restraints, close-pitch cams, and hydraulic locks that hold pressure even if you leave the vehicle up for a lunch break. Not every lift on the market does all three of those things.
2-Post vs 4-Post for Wheel Service
For wheel-off work, a 2-post beats a 4-post every time because the wheels hang free. A 4-post is better for storage and general maintenance where you keep the wheels on the runways. Third-generation garage families we work with often end up with both — a 2-post for daily service, a 4-post for storage or alignment. In a single-bay home shop, if you have to pick one for wheel bearing service, it is a 2-post with a nine-thousand-pound rating. A home car lift for garage service that skews toward wheels-off work should not be a 4-post.
