The dozen: rated capacity, lift height, overall height, minimum ceiling, column spacing, runway or arm reach, drive-through clearance, motor voltage and amperage, motor horsepower, weight of the lift itself, anchor torque spec, and minimum concrete requirement. Everything else is nice to know. First-time buyers get lost in feature lists and forget to compare the twelve numbers that determine whether the lift actually fits. Print two spec sheets side by side and write those twelve numbers in a column. That’s your comparison. Manufacturers publish PDFs on their own sites — BendPak, Atlas, Rotary, Forward, Challenger all do. Read the PDF, not the retailer’s summary. Retailer summaries drop numbers to make the lift look better than it is. The full spec sheet includes the fine print like “measured at maximum symmetric load” that matters when your load is asymmetric.
Height and Clearance Numbers Side by Side
The height and clearance comparison is where most first-timers lose. A home car lift for garage in northeast Iowa often lives in a garage with 10-11 feet of ceiling, which sits right at the edge of many 2-post specs. Overall height numbers vary: a BendPak XPR-10AS clocks around 12 feet, a comparable Atlas PV-10P is close to 11.5, and a low-ceiling 4-post like the BendPak SDO series is closer to 10 feet. Minimum ceiling requirements are usually 3-6 inches taller than overall height to give clearance for the crossbeam and cables. Drive-through clearance for a 2-post — the distance between the columns — runs 100-110 inches, which fits most vehicles. Runway width on a 4-post is 20-22 inches typically. Put the numbers next to your garage measurements and see which lifts fit. Capacity: Why 9,000 lb Is the Home Sweet Spot
Capacity is the number that gets over-bought. A home car lift for garage rated at 9,000 pounds handles almost every vehicle a homeowner will own: sedans, SUVs, half-ton pickups, small crossovers. Even a full-size truck like an F-150 comes in under 6,000 pounds curb weight for most configurations. Going up to 10,000 or 12,000 pounds costs more, adds bigger columns that eat garage space, and demands more slab. The step from 9,000 to 10,000 might make sense if you own a heavy-duty three-quarter-ton pickup. The step to 12,000 makes sense only if you own a dually or plan to. For first-time buyers, the honest recommendation is 9,000 pounds unless you can name a specific vehicle over 6,500 pounds that will regularly go on the lift. Diesel dually owners: 12,000. Everyone else: 9,000. Northeast Iowa buyers with F-250s and larger sometimes need the extra capacity, but even a three-quarter-ton diesel usually fits under 8,500 pounds without stressing the lift.
Column Width, Runway Length, and Fit
The physical footprint of a home car lift for garage is easy to underestimate until the crates land. A 2-post lift has two column bases (usually 24×24 inches each) plus arm swing radius. Total floor footprint including arm swing is roughly 12 feet by 12 feet, which fits in a standard two-car garage bay with room to walk around. A 4-post lift has four column bases arranged in a rectangle roughly 15 feet by 8 feet, with runways above running the full length. Length of the runway matters if you plan to lift a longer vehicle — some full-size trucks want a 17-foot runway, and shorter runways cut off the rear. Manufacturers publish “recommended vehicle length” for each model. Compare that to what you own and what you’d realistically buy. Northeast Iowa buyers with dually pickups need the longer runways; sedan-and-crossover households can use the standard.
Cable, Chain, and Hydraulic System Differences
Home car lift for garage models split on how they move: 4-posts are typically hydraulic-cylinder-driven with cables that route the load across the four columns; 2-posts are hydraulic-cylinder-driven with chains or cables inside the columns. The cable diameter and count matter for long-term reliability. 4-posts should use 3/8-inch or larger aircraft cable in a four-cable configuration; skinny cables are a warning sign. Chains on 2-posts should be roller chain, not leaf. Hydraulic systems on both should have a single-cylinder-per-side design or synchronized dual-cylinder. Anything with a single central cylinder driving both sides through a linkage is older tech and rarer now. BendPak and Atlas both use current cable-and-cylinder designs. Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts use the same architecture. Read the spec sheet for cable diameter and cylinder count. If the spec sheet doesn’t publish those numbers, we consider that a red flag on the brand.
State Inspection Prep for Non-Commercial Use
Iowa doesn’t require state inspections on private-use home car lift for garage installs. But northeast Iowa buyers who want to be ANSI/ALI ALCTV-aligned — either for insurance reasons or personal safety — should plan on an annual inspection anyway. The prep list is simple: verify anchor torque, inspect cables for broken strands (4-post), check hydraulic hoses for cracks, cycle safety locks, and test emergency lowering. An ALI-certified inspector will do all of that in about an hour. First-time buyers often skip this because it’s not required, but the same list is what keeps the lift safe over its lifetime. Cost of an outside ALI inspector runs a couple hundred dollars if you ever want that stamp on the record.
Picking the Model That Actually Fits
