This is a first-year ownership story, from the site survey through the first oil change to what we’d change if we did it over. Month zero: the site survey
Every home car lift for garage install we do starts with a site survey — even for customers who already know what they want. This one started with a 12-foot ceiling assumption that turned out to be 11-foot-8 at the actual lift centerline once we lasered it. That difference decided the lift model. A full overhead 2-post would have cleared under a closed door but not an open one. We spec’d a 4-post 9K with rolling jacks instead — better for storage anyway, since the customer wanted to park a second car underneath during Iowa winters. The lesson from month zero: measure at the lift, not at the door frame, and never assume the ridge height applies at the wall side.
Month one: install day
Install came six weeks later. We delivered on our own trailer, unloaded with a small forklift the customer had rented, and got the lift level and cycling in about half a day on a fresh 5-inch pour. The pad was overkill in the best way — no shimming needed, no anchor concerns. We commissioned the lift, registered the ALI Gold certification with the manufacturer, and ran a full test cycle with a loaded vehicle. His daughter’s Civic went up first, ceremonially. Then we walked through the safety locks — every two to two and a half inches on this model, which the owner can pick to set on depending on how high he wants the vehicle for the job at hand.
Month three: first real service
The first oil change came in July. This is where a home car lift for garage justifies itself. Instead of ramps and a creeper, the customer pulled onto the runways, cycled up to chest height, and drained the pan standing up. Twenty minutes total including the filter. He texted us a photo. Three weeks later he did brakes on the second car — pads and rotors both fronts — and reported the wheel-off workflow felt as good as the shop lift he had used at a friend’s business years earlier. Month six: storage mode
By fall the collector had shifted from I’m going to work on cars to I’m going to store them. That’s normal. The customer bought a car cover and a set of tire pillows, drove the seasonal car up in November, and left it there until March. Under it, he parked the daily driver. The customer’s paperwork got registered at commissioning, and the manufacturer sent the warranty booklet directly. No action needed on the owner’s part. This matters if you ever sell the lift or the property; the next buyer can look up the serial and see it was installed to spec. Month twelve: what we’d change
One year in, we asked the customer what he’d change. Two things. First: he’d have added rolling jacks from day one instead of buying them later — brake and tire work is faster with them, and adding after install means the runways get pulled apart. Second: he wishes he’d run a second 220V drop for a plasma cutter he ended up wanting. Neither is a lift complaint. Both are lessons for the next home car lift for garage install we do.
