A European specialty shop in Ankeny called us last year mid-build-out — the shop was framed, the slab poured, and the owner was ready to drop a hydraulic lift automotive package into every bay. Then he ran into three myths that nearly cost him thousands and a week of rework. The stories he had heard from other Iowa shop owners were half-right at best. We walked through the actual sequence of a build-out with him, cleared up what he had wrong, and got him into three ALI-listed lifts on the correct schedule. Here are the myths we run into most.

Myth 1: “Any Concrete Slab Is Good Enough”

The single most common mistake we see on a new hydraulic lift automotive install is a slab that was poured to residential-garage spec instead of commercial-lift spec. A lift needs 3,000 to 4,000 psi concrete, minimum four inches thick, with control joints located clear of anchor pattern. The Ankeny shop had specified a three-inch slab because a general contractor said that was “typical for a shop.” It is not. We caught it before pour and got the spec revised. If your slab is already down and thinner than four inches, we can sometimes core-drill and pour a thickened anchor pad — but avoiding that rework is why we ask to see slab specs before we quote. Iowa freeze-thaw cycles are also brutal, so we specify additional edge thickening near overhead doors.

Myth 2: “Install Electrical After the Lift Is In”

The Ankeny owner assumed the electrical could be run last, once he saw where the lift landed. In practice that costs money — the pump on a two-post is column-mounted and the disconnect needs to be reachable and code-compliant, which means the electrician wants to know the pump side before he pulls wire. On a hydraulic lift automotive install we ask the shop to run 220V single-phase (or 208V three-phase for higher-capacity lifts) to the intended pump column with a lockout-tagout disconnect above eye level before we arrive with the lift on the truck. That one hour of pre-planning saves a return electrical visit that would otherwise add a day to your build-out schedule.

Myth 3: “Overhead Height Doesn’t Matter for European Cars”

European specialty shops live and die by lift height — a Mercedes GL or BMW X7 needs enough overhead to hoist to service height without smacking a lift’s overhead beam or shop ceiling. The Ankeny shop originally planned 11 feet of overhead clearance, which is fine for a symmetric two-post lifting a Golf, but not enough for the taller SUVs the shop actually services. We spec a minimum of 12 feet, and 14 feet ideally, on a hydraulic lift automotive setup that will see a mix of European sedans and SUVs. If your building is already framed lower, we can swap in a baseplate lift and recover that clearance — but knowing before you buy is cheaper than knowing after.

Myth 4: “Baseplate Lifts Are Always Weaker”

The internet still repeats a myth that overhead lifts are stronger and baseplate lifts are inferior. That was true in the 1990s. Modern ALI-listed baseplate lifts from Rotary and Challenger are rated identically to their overhead counterparts and are the correct choice anywhere overhead clearance is limited. The Ankeny shop was ready to reject baseplate on principle until we walked him through the actual ratings. He put a baseplate PKS in one bay and an overhead symmetric in another, and now uses whichever fits the vehicle better. Myth 5: “You Can Install a Two-Post Anywhere in the Bay”

You cannot. A hydraulic lift automotive install needs at least three feet of clear space on each side of the columns for arm swing, an approach lane free of obstructions in front of the lift, and clear behind for the door path if arms are asymmetric. The Ankeny shop had planned the third bay against a shared wall with a break room, and the anchor pattern would have put the passenger-side column six inches from the wall — arms wouldn’t have swung. We caught it on the pre-install site visit, moved the bay layout eighteen inches, and saved a redo. Free site visits are cheaper than any of the alternatives.

Myth 6: “Install Compressed Air Last”

Modern lifts use pneumatic arm-restraint releases and safety latch releases, so a hydraulic lift automotive setup needs shop air run to each column before the lift is functional. Not after. If you sequence air last, we can install the lift but you cannot use it until the lines are in. The right order for a garage build-out: slab, electrical to each column position, compressed air lines to each column, then lift install. Follow that sequence and the first vehicle up on the lift is the day after we leave, not a week later.

Myth 7: “All Brands Are Basically the Same”

They are not. For a European specialty shop we recommend Rotary or Challenger commercial lifts every time — the arm geometry, low-pad options, and adapter ecosystem are built around German lift-point service.
