A municipal fleet manager in northeast Iowa asked us to help set up a written daily safety procedure for the mid rise scissor lift in his garage. His crew rotates — some techs are seasoned, some just came off equipment school — and he wanted a consistent walkthrough posted on the wall so nobody had to guess. Fair request. A Day at the Northeast Iowa Fleet Garage
The garage services a mix of municipal light-duty pickups, a few utility vans, and the town’s pair of dump trucks (those go on the big lift; the mid-rise handles everything else). Daily rhythm is oil changes, tire rotations, brake work, and the occasional suspension repair. A mid rise scissor lift is the right tool for most of that work because it’s fast to position — drive on, align, raise — and clears the wheels for tire and brake service without needing arms to swing. The manager’s concern wasn’t performance; it was consistency. When two different techs use the same lift in the same day, both need to follow the same procedure. Writing that procedure down and posting it is the whole point of a safety walkthrough.
Safety Walkthrough Step One: Pre-Operation Check
Before the first vehicle of the day. Walk around the mid rise scissor lift. Check that the floor around the lift is clean — no oil puddles, no tools scattered, no obstructions in the platform swing arc. Visually inspect the hydraulic power unit for oil weeping at the fittings or cylinder rod. Check the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir with the platforms fully down. Cycle the lift up and down once empty, listening for anything that doesn’t sound right: chatter, whining, hesitation at any point in the travel. If the safety-cam ladder doesn’t click audibly as the platform rises, stop and investigate. The daily pre-check takes ninety seconds and catches nearly every problem before a vehicle gets involved.
Safety Walkthrough Step Two: Vehicle Positioning
Drive the vehicle onto the platform slowly — walking pace at most. Center it side-to-side and align the vehicle’s factory lift points with the pads. On most fleet pickups this means a pad under each pinch-weld indicator or frame rail lift point. If pads don’t align, do not proceed by moving the pads to a random-looking flat spot. Adjust the vehicle position, or use the manufacturer-supplied pad extension. For any mid rise scissor lift, the load must sit on the vehicle’s designed jacking points, period. Set the parking brake, put the transmission in park (or first gear if manual), and turn off the ignition. Check that no tools or fluid drain pans are under the vehicle. Confirm no bystanders are in the lift envelope.
Safety Walkthrough Step Three: Raising the Lift
Press the raise control. As the platforms leave the floor, pause at about six inches of rise and walk around the vehicle. Confirm each pad is fully engaged with its lift point — no partial contact, no pad walking. If anything looks wrong, lower back to the floor and reposition. Only after that pause proceed to full working height. Listen for the safety-cam clicks as the lift travels up. When you release the raise button at working height, the lift will drop about half an inch onto the last safety cam — that’s normal, it’s the mechanical hold engaging. Do not go under the vehicle before you hear that engage. That click is the signal the mid rise scissor lift is mechanically locked, not just hydraulically supported.
Safety Walkthrough Step Four: Working Under Load
Once at height on the safety cams, work confidently — that’s what the lift is for. But: do not shake the vehicle violently, do not use it as leverage against a stuck bolt (use a proper breaker bar and pull toward yourself), and do not stack heavy tools on the platform edges where they can shift. When lowering to change working position, always come off the safety cam by raising first (bump up an inch), then lower to the new position. Never crank down on a locked cam — that’s what damages the cam mechanism over time. When the job is done, lower slowly and remove the vehicle only after the platforms are fully seated on the shop floor.
Hydraulic Cylinder Seals and Rebuild Kits
Cylinder seals are the wear item on any mid rise scissor lift. They fail slowly at first — a slight weep at the cylinder rod, gradually growing. Catch it early and a seal-kit rebuild is straightforward and inexpensive. Let it go until the rod is scored and the cylinder needs full replacement, and the cost multiplies by ten. Every mid rise scissor lift we sell has a seal kit on our parts shelf. Fleet garages should stock one preemptively — for a busy municipal shop, cylinder seals typically need refreshing at the four-to-six-year mark. A rebuild takes an experienced tech about half a day per cylinder. If your fleet crew doesn’t want to do it in-house, we come out.
