An off-road and overlanding shop in Ankeny that builds custom rigs for weekend explorers called us this spring about a portable auto scissor lift they wanted for their build bay. The question they asked first was about safety-cam engagement – how does a scissor lift lock a raised vehicle, and can it fail? On a portable auto scissor lift there are no arm restraints because there are no arms in the two-post sense. Instead, there are safety cams on the scissor mechanism itself, engaging automatically at every rise position. This is the Iowa install case study for that shop, from spec through six months of real overlanding work.

The build bay and its problem
Their bay was seventeen feet deep, twelve feet wide, and dedicated to rig builds – long jobs that could tie the bay up for a week at a time. A permanent lift would have made the bay a permanent lift bay, and they did not want that. Some builds need the vehicle on the ground, on a wheel dolly, on ramps, or on a portable scissor. A portable auto scissor lift gave them the flexibility to roll it out of the way during ground-level work and roll it back for underbody phases. The bay had an eleven-foot ceiling, a healthy concrete slab, and enough width for the deployed footprint plus perimeter movement. On paper, it was a straightforward install. In practice, the safety-cam question was the one they wanted answered before signing off.
Safety cams: how they actually work
A portable auto scissor lift’s safety-cam system is a mechanical ratchet built into the scissor mechanism. As the lift raises, a spring-loaded cam rides along a toothed rail. Every couple of inches, the cam drops into a tooth and locks the lift at that position. To lower, the operator physically retracts the cam using a lever or hydraulic release. There is no way for gravity alone to release the cam. The vehicle is mechanically held at the rise position, not hydraulically held. That distinction matters. Hydraulic hold depends on seals and fluid. Mechanical hold depends on steel-on-steel engagement. Even if the hydraulic system lost pressure entirely, the cam would keep the vehicle up until an operator actively released it. That is why safety cams are the primary life-safety feature on a scissor lift. The hydraulics move the load. The cams hold it.
The ALI inspection angle
Iowa does not require commercial lift inspections the way some states do, but ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) inspections are the industry norm for shops that want to demonstrate due diligence. A portable auto scissor lift can be ALI-inspected annually just like a permanent lift. The inspection checks the safety cams, the hydraulic system, the frame welds, the pivot pins, and the wear parts. For the Ankeny shop, that annual inspection tied into their existing safety program – they already ALI-inspected their two two-posts, and adding the portable to the roster was ten minutes of paperwork. Our ALI Gold certification article lays that out. That inspection gives them documentation for their commercial insurance carrier and for their own liability protection. If a lift-related incident ever happened, current ALI paperwork is the difference between a defensible position and a nightmare.
Delivery, uncrating, and the first cam test
Freight arrived on a straight truck with a liftgate. We uncrated the portable auto scissor lift in the bay, wheeled it into position, and ran the first raise empty. The safety-cam test was the first item on our commissioning checklist. We raised the lift to the first lock position, listened for the cam engagement, released and lowered. Repeated at every lock position through max rise. Twenty-two lock positions total on this particular unit. Every one engaged cleanly. That is the test we do not skip on any install, portable or permanent. If a single cam misses on the first cycle, we do not accept the lift for service until the manufacturer either replaces the mechanism or verifies the fault. Ours never miss because we pre-inspect before we uncrate on the customer’s floor. Their shop lead watched the whole cycle and asked us to run it again. We did. Same result.
Pad placement on lifted trucks and rigs
An overlanding rig with skid plates, rock sliders, and armored floors is not a car. The factory jacking points can be buried under armor, and finding a real load-bearing frame point requires knowledge of the specific build. A portable auto scissor lift picks the vehicle at four pad points, so getting all four onto real frame is critical. We walked their techs through common overlanding builds: a Toyota with a full skid package, a Jeep with aftermarket sliders, a half-ton pickup with a bed rack loaded. Each one has different pad locations than a stock vehicle. Their lead tech built a small binder with rig-by-rig pad diagrams. Our installation walkthrough covers the same discipline. The safety cams protect against a lot of things, but they cannot protect against pads placed on sheet metal instead of frame.
First customer rig on the portable
The first paying job on the portable auto scissor lift was a mid-size pickup with a mid-height suspension lift, all-terrain tires, and a light armor package. Their tech placed the pads on the frame rails using the diagram they had built for that platform. Raised slowly, cam-locked at the second position for a visual pad-placement check, and continued to the working height. The truck sat level, the cams held, and the tech had underbody access without the two-post columns getting in the way of the wide fenders. Portable made sense for the vehicle type. On a two-post, the fender flares and armor would have pushed the arms wider than ideal. On a scissor, none of that mattered – the platform reached from behind the front wheels to ahead of the rears, and the outside of the vehicle was fully clear. That is the vehicle type where portable scissors earn their place.
Six-month check and the maintenance log
Six months in, we came back for a service check and a maintenance-log review. The portable auto scissor lift had run about ninety commercial rigs through its cycle in that window. The safety cams still engaged cleanly at every position – we cycled all twenty-two. The pivot pins were greased on schedule. The hydraulic fluid was at the fill line. The pads were about halfway worn. Their shop lead had built a two-page maintenance log that tracked every raise, every lower, every cam engagement, and every wear-part observation. That log is not required, but it is the kind of documentation that makes an ALI inspection trivial and any future insurance claim straightforward. We took a photo of the log and asked if we could show it to other commercial customers as a template. They said yes. That log is now what we recommend to every shop taking delivery of a portable from us.
