When a car collector near Cedar Rapids called us last spring, he wanted a portable auto scissor lift he could wheel out of the way when his stall had to fit a longer trailer or a diesel pickup. He didn’t want a hole in the floor, he didn’t want to lose a bay, and he didn’t want to compromise on lift height. We spec’d him a portable auto scissor lift built for a home shop, walked through the sizing on a video call, and delivered it two weeks later. Here’s how his first full year actually played out.

Why he chose a portable auto scissor lift over a two-post

He already owned an older two-post that lived permanently in the middle of his three-stall garage, and that permanence had become the problem. The bay was tied up whether he was using it or not, and when family visited with a longer SUV, the columns forced awkward parking every time. A portable auto scissor lift solved that by rolling out of the way in about ninety seconds. He kept the two-post for heavier trucks and used the scissor for daily drivers and weekend projects. Two lifts, one three-stall garage, and finally no wasted bays. He also liked that the scissor gave him full underbody access without the door-in-the-way issue two-post columns can create on older cars with wide doors. We priced out both approaches and ran through the trade-offs on lift height and vehicle mix in our two-post versus scissor comparison, and it wasn’t a close call for his use case. The scissor was going to earn its keep every weekend.

Measuring the stall: ceiling height, door swing, and clearance

His garage was an oversized three-stall, but oversized needs numbers. We measured a ninety-six-inch ceiling in the stall he wanted the scissor in, which was borderline. A portable auto scissor lift raises the vehicle roughly forty-eight to fifty-two inches at full extension. Add a sedan roof at about fifty-six inches and you are near the ceiling. That would have been a problem if he had been chasing full rise on every job. Instead we walked through what the actual work looked like – tire rotations, oil changes, brake work, exhaust. None of those need max rise. He worked most jobs at the second or third lock position, which put the vehicle well under the beam. Door swing mattered too. He had a side workbench and a rolling tool cart that we planned around so nothing pinched when the scissor was deployed. We chalked the footprint on the floor before he committed. Ten minutes of chalk lines saved a round of the-cart-does-not-fit-anymore a month after install.

Delivery day and the very first raise

Freight showed up on a twenty-six-foot straight truck with a liftgate, which is what we always ask for on portable units so the customer is not crawling under a semi trailer. The unit was on a pallet strapped tight. We wheeled it into the stall on the built-in casters, uncrated it in about twenty minutes, and had it ready for its first raise inside an hour. The first raise is always empty – no vehicle. We ran it to full rise, cycled the locks through every position, dropped it, then ran it up again with the vehicle he was most nervous about: a low-slung sports car with three inches of clearance to the pinch points. The scissor pads slid under easily and picked the car cleanly. He said later that first raise settled every doubt he had about switching to portable. If you can watch it lift the fussiest car in the collection without drama, you know it can handle the daily drivers with room to spare.

First ninety days: what broke in, what did not

Ninety days in, we called to check on him. Nothing had broken. The pump had settled into a quieter rhythm after the first dozen cycles, which is normal – new hydraulics blow their air out over the first several raises and then quiet down. He had used the lift roughly twice a week for tire rotations across four vehicles, some brake pad work on his daughter’s car, and one exhaust weld on the sports car. The locks engaged crisply every time. The one thing he flagged was the caster wheels tracking a light film of grease across the epoxy floor when he rolled it back to the corner. That is a portable-lift reality – the wheels see everything the floor has on it. He put a rubber mat under the parked position and the problem went away. No leaks, no lock skips, no pump complaints. For a first ninety days on a portable, that is about as clean a report as it gets.

The learning curve on lock positions and load balance

The one place he had to learn was picking the right lock for the job. A portable auto scissor lift locks about every two and a half inches through its travel, and it is tempting to just run it to full rise every time. That is slower and, more importantly, it puts the vehicle higher than it needs to be for most work. He learned to pick the lowest lock that still cleared his creeper – usually the fourth or fifth position – and settle in there. Load balance was the other lesson. On a portable, you place the scissor pads at the vehicle’s factory jacking points and then verify the vehicle sits centered fore and aft on the platform. He caught himself twice in month two with a slight nose-heavy bias on a sedan. Nothing dangerous, but the raise felt off. Once he learned to check pad placement before every raise, that went away. It is a fifteen-second habit that becomes automatic.

Winter storage and floor concerns in eastern Iowa

Eastern Iowa winters mean brine, sand, and enough salt on the undercarriage to eat a portable lift’s finish if you let it. He set up a rinse routine – a quick hose-off on a warm day before the vehicle went on the scissor – that kept the platform clean. In deep January when temperatures parked below zero, he moved the lift closer to his garage heater. Cold hydraulic fluid raises slower and stiffer, and giving the pump five minutes near the heater before the first raise of the day made a noticeable difference. The other winter concern was floor cracking. His slab was fifteen years old with visible spider cracks in one corner. We had him keep the parked position on the newer half of the slab and never lift a vehicle over the cracked zone. That is a decision worth making before the first winter, not after you have watched a hairline crack spread with each freeze-thaw cycle.

First real service at the twelve-month mark

At the twelve-month mark we walked him through the first real service, which on a portable auto scissor lift is not much. Hydraulic fluid level – still at the fill line, no top-off. We inspected the four scissor pivot pins for wear, greased them, and cycled the lift. We looked at hose fittings for any weeping and found none. We ran the safety-lock engagement at every position and confirmed each lock caught cleanly – the same routine we outline in our annual lift safety inspection guide. Total service time was about forty-five minutes and no parts. He asked us to write down the next-year checklist and we did: same steps, plus a hydraulic fluid drain-and-fill at year three. Compared to the calendar on his two-post, the scissor practically maintains itself. He told us at the end of the visit that year one had already paid for the lift in bay flexibility alone.
