A small-fleet operator in Dubuque called us last spring asking about a portable automotive scissor lift, and the conversation went the way most of these calls do. The shop already had one permanent two-post, a wash bay, and a staging area — with no room to give up a stall to a second bolted lift. The Two Configurations Head to Head
The Dubuque shop was choosing between a mid-rise unit and a full-rise portable automotive scissor lift. The mid-rise tops out around 48 inches, weighs less, folds down flat, and rolls through a standard eight-foot bay door. The full-rise reaches about 60 inches, carries a higher weight rating, and costs more up front. Both share the same core geometry — two scissor legs, an integrated power unit, deck runways, and a mechanical safety cam that locks at set positions.
For exhaust and driveline work, the deciding factor was whether the tech needed to stand upright underneath. A mid-rise leaves you hunched. A full-rise doesn’t. Because the Dubuque customer ran diesel exhaust cuts and rear-end pulls three or four times a week, a full-rise made sense even at the higher price. That said, plenty of shops we serve are perfectly happy with a mid-rise for tire, brake, and undercarriage work where a stool does the job.
Freight and Unloading in Eastern Iowa
Portable doesn’t mean small. A boxed full-rise portable automotive scissor lift ships on a pallet at roughly 1,400 to 1,800 lbs depending on model, and freight terminals around Dubuque handle it on a standard LTL run out of a regional Midwest hub. Lead time from order to delivery usually lands in a two-to-three-week window, sometimes faster if the manufacturer has Midwest stock.
We confirm three things with the carrier before scheduling: liftgate service (yes, unless the customer has a dock), residential or commercial delivery, and an appointment window. Without a forklift, delivery still works — it just takes more hands. The liftgate drops the pallet at the door. From there, a pallet jack walks the crate about 90 percent of the way, but the last several feet often need muscle because the deck sections come out heavier than they look. We recommend two people minimum on a no-forklift unload, and more than one of our customers has rented a small engine hoist from a local tool-rental yard just for lift-day.
One rule we give every customer: do not schedule freight delivery for the same day you plan to run the lift. Give yourself at least a day between drop-off and first use.
Exhaust and Driveline Access With a Scissor
Here is where a portable scissor earns its keep for the work the Dubuque customer does. The deck is open in the middle, which means exhaust systems, transfer cases, driveshafts, and rear-end pumpkins sit directly overhead when the truck is up. That is a real advantage over a permanent four-post with drive-on runways, where you sometimes need a rolling bridge jack just to unload the axles.
The trade-off is that the scissor’s front and rear posts mean you will not swing a full-length exhaust out the back of the truck in one piece. Most shops handle this by cutting the exhaust at a joint that clears the rear structure and swapping sections separately. It is not a real problem — just a small workflow adjustment.
For driveline work specifically, techs told us they were surprised how much faster their driveshaft swaps got once they were off a two-post’s arms. The clock savings add up fast on a fleet workflow with three or four vans a week.
Locking Positions and Working Height
Every legitimate portable automotive scissor lift on the U.S. market uses a mechanical safety cam that engages at fixed positions as the lift rises. On the units we sell, that cam clicks in every 2 to 2.5 inches. So it is not just all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up — the operator dials the height to whatever the job calls for.
For exhaust work, techs usually settle at eye-to-shoulder height so they are not reaching overhead. For driveline pulls, they go higher, letting the driveshaft drop straight down onto a stand. For simple tire rotations, they lock at chest height and stay standing.
The mechanical cam is separate from hydraulic hold. When anyone is working under the vehicle, the load drops onto the mechanical cams — never resting on hydraulic pressure. That is standard ANSI/ALI ALCTV language, and every portable automotive scissor lift we sell carries the ALI Gold Label to prove the design passes those tests. If a competitor’s scissor does not have the label, we tell customers to walk away.
Rolling Between Bays and Floor Considerations
The whole reason a Dubuque shop looks at portable in the first place is the ability to roll the lift out of the way when the bay needs to serve another purpose. On the units we stock, the deck has integrated caster wheels or a folding tow handle that lets one person walk the lift across a level shop floor.
Level is the operative word. A portable does not tolerate a 2 percent slope the way a permanent lift on anchors does. If the floor has drainage pitch, we position the lift so the scissor legs cross the pitch line rather than sit along it. We also recommend steel plates under the base pads if the floor has cracks or expansion joints in the wrong spot.
Rolling into place typically takes under five minutes once a shop has done it a few times. Rolling out takes about the same. That workflow shift is something a permanent lift simply cannot offer.
