A scissor lift for automotive service is a real commitment for a collector — more so than a two-post, in some ways, because it decides where the car sits in the building for the next twenty years. We installed one in a private collection garage in Ames last year, and the owner asked us to write up what the first year actually looked like. Which brand held up, which parts wore first, and where he would do it differently. Why a collector picks a scissor lift for automotive maintenance over a two-post

For a private collection, the scissor lift for automotive maintenance has a specific selling point: you don’t lose bay footprint to two vertical columns. In a three-car detached garage where every foot of wall space is shelving and cabinets, columns are in the way of the toolboxes, the parts washer, the tire rack, and the workbench. A drive-on scissor pushes the entire mechanical footprint into the floor. The collector we worked with in Ames owns eight cars, six of which live in the garage at any time, one on the lift for storage-plus-service. He drives a car in, raises it three feet, slides the next car underneath, and closes the door. A two-post can do storage but with columns in the way of car doors and workbench access. He drove that mental math himself before calling us, and we agreed with him. The brand shortlist we walked him through

The scissor lift for automotive market is crowded with import brands most collectors have never heard of. We narrow that shortlist to lifts we can actually service in five, ten, twenty years. For a serious collector we walked through three: Rotary (SM14 mid-rise and SL210 full-rise families), Challenger (SX-series scissors), and BendPak (SP-series). All three have real US parts pipelines. Rotary is our default because they own the North American aftermarket for lift parts — cylinders, seals, cables, and safety mechanisms are stocked in Madison and Wooster and ship next-day to us. Challenger is a strong number two; parts move through Independence, Iowa. BendPak covers the home-garage tier well and ships out of Santa Paula. For collectors, we push toward Rotary or Challenger. The reason is not brand loyalty — it’s the calendar. In year twelve, when a cylinder seal starts weeping, you want to make one call and get the kit in your hands in three days. Off-brand imports may deliver a fine lift on day one, but the parts pipeline dries up when the importer changes distributors, and that eventually happens.

Install day in Ames — what a collector’s garage adds to the schedule

Install day in a private collection garage is longer than a shop install for one reason: cars. In a shop, we move service vehicles out of the way once. In a collection garage, we’re navigating a Porsche 911, a first-gen Cobra, an air-cooled 964, and a modified E30 M3 out of a three-car bay so we can bring in a forklift for the pallet drop. That’s a two-hour add. We planned for it. The owner had cleared the middle bay to studs and moved his workbench thirty feet to the north wall. Concrete had been cored the previous week — his floor was five inches, which was fine for the SL210 we shipped him. Actual bolt-down and hydraulic hookup ran under four hours. Testing and cycling took another hour. Total, install-truck-in to install-truck-out was seven hours with the vehicle-shuffle overhead. We handed him the maintenance schedule, walked him through the safety-lock release, cycled the lift with him standing at the controls, and left. He drove the M3 onto it the next morning and started the first oil change.

The first CV axle job on the new scissor

The first real service job on the new scissor lift for automotive work was a CV axle replacement on his 964. Air-cooled Porsches are a good test of a lift because the ground clearance is low and the pinch-welds are short. The scissor pad heights let him load the car flat, raise slowly, verify the pinch-weld contact at eye level, and continue up to full height. On a two-post, he would have been on his back setting arms and repositioning the swing pads for a few minutes. On the scissor, load-in to wheels-off was under ten minutes. The axle job itself ran normally — pull the wheel, break the axle nut, disconnect the ball joint and outer tie rod, pull the axle from the differential. What the scissor added was a stable, unobstructed workspace at the wheel well. He described it later as the first time he had worked on the 964 without moving jack stands or bending under a two-post arm. That is the answer to why we recommend scissors for collectors more often than not — it makes the actual work faster.

Six months in — parts that wore, parts that didn’t

At the six-month check, we came out and walked the lift with him. What wore first, and what didn’t. Hydraulic fluid was clean and at level, no leaks visible around the cylinder gland or the hose fittings. The safety-lock pawls were engaging cleanly at every stop position. The lift had cycled about a hundred and forty times in six months — heavy for a private garage. What had started to show wear were the rubber pinch-weld pads. He had loaded a Cayenne on it twice, and the heavier vehicle had chewed the corners of the pads. We swapped them under a Rotary parts order that ran a low three figures for the set of four. Nothing else needed attention. The mechanical scissor lift for automotive service has fewer wear points than a two-post — no equalizer cables, no cable sheaves, no pulleys — so at six months there is honestly not much to check beyond fluid, hoses, and pads. We told him to plan on an annual fluid change and pad replacement every two years under his usage pattern.

Twelve months — a full year of storage-plus-service on one lift

A year in, the scissor lift for automotive maintenance had earned its keep. He had done four oil services, two brake jobs, one CV axle job, and a full suspension refresh on the E30. He had also stored the M3 on the lift with the 964 parked underneath for two months over the winter. That storage mode is what a lot of collectors buy the lift for, and it works — but with two honest caveats. First, the lift stays raised for weeks or months at a time, and hydraulic cylinders hold pressure by sitting on mechanical safety locks, not on fluid. The design is intended for exactly this. Second, storing a car overhead means you never lose the bay for service — the car underneath comes and goes without touching the raised one. He rotated three cars through the lower bay during the two-month storage window. In year two we expect him to add a mid-rise in the third bay for tire work, which will give him three usable service positions in the same footprint. That is the compounding value of a good scissor decision.

Where he’d do it differently, and how we ship parts fast

Asked what he would do differently, the collector gave us three notes. First, he would have poured six-inch concrete instead of five — not because five wasn’t enough, but because he wants to add a second lift and does not want to core again. Second, he would have wired 220V on both walls, not just the east wall. Adding a lift on the west side now means a run through the ceiling. Third, he would have bought the tall-pad kit at order time — he ordered it two months after install and paid shipping twice. Small learnings, all of them cheap in the grand scheme. What he wouldn’t change: the brand choice, the height class, the drive-on configuration. On the parts pipeline side, we’ve shipped him pads, fluid, and one small hydraulic fitting over the year, all next-day from our warehouse or two-day from Rotary.
