Myth 1: you need a 4-post to work on any battery-EV

The most common myth we hear from Ankeny EV shops shopping their first bay is that CV axle and half-shaft work on a battery-EV requires a 4-post. It does not. A scissor lift for automotive EV work is often the better tool because it lets you drop a suspension corner while the wheel comes off the ground, which is exactly what a CV axle or half-shaft swap wants. The reason people default to 4-post is battery weight distribution — a battery-EV’s mass sits low and evenly across the wheelbase, and a runway-style 4-post or a full-rise scissor with matched-runway platforms handles that load pattern predictably. Wheels-free scissor lifts and 2-post lifts both work on EVs; they just require attention to the manufacturer’s lifting point diagram, which is more critical on skateboard-battery vehicles than on internal-combustion cars.

Myth 2: model numbers are marketing fluff

Not true. When you compare a scissor lift for automotive EV service across brands, the model number is doing real work. Rotary’s XA14 and X14 are 14,000 pound platform scissors, one geared for alignment work and one for general service, with different runway lengths and rolling jack compatibility. Challenger’s SX14 is another 14,000 pound scissor in the same class, and their DX77 and SRM10 are smaller mid-rise scissors intended for tire and brake work. These numbers encode capacity, platform style, and the runway or arm-pad configuration. Do not just chase the capacity number — a 10,000 pound scissor with the right platform length and pad set will out-perform a 14,000 pound scissor with the wrong geometry for your service mix.

Myth 3: EV curb weight kills the safety margin

The math looks scary if you only glance at it. A three-row electric SUV can push past 6,500 pounds. A full-size electric pickup can top 8,500 pounds. A 10,000 pound scissor lift for automotive service has technically enough headroom on paper, but people worry the safety margin is too thin. In practice, the safety margin on a properly-selected scissor is not just capacity divided by curb weight — it is also platform length versus wheelbase, arm-pad reach versus lift-point spacing, and hydraulic cycle count versus your daily work rhythm. For most Ankeny EV shops, we recommend 12,000 to 14,000 pound scissors as the sweet spot: it covers current EV curb weights, has runway length to spare, and gives you room for whatever next year’s model gains in battery capacity.

Myth 4: wheels-free is always slower for CV axle work

Wheels-free scissors get a bad rap for CV axle and half-shaft jobs. The claim is you have to jack twice — once to raise the lift, once to pull the wheel off with a jack stand. In reality, a proper wheels-free scissor lift for automotive service has a built-in rolling jack option so you lift once, pin the safety latch, then use the rolling jack to drop the corner while the other three tires stay planted. For an EV shop doing frequent CV axle and half-shaft R&R, that workflow is faster than a runway 4-post that would need a separate rolling jack anyway. The workflow is not the myth — the myth is that scissors force you into a slower sequence.

Myth 5: pad configuration does not matter on EVs

The single biggest install-year regret we hear from EV shops is that they under-spec’d the pad and adapter kit. Skateboard-battery EVs have lifting points that are farther inboard than most internal-combustion cars, and some have factory-specified pinch-weld pucks or dedicated lift-point recesses. A scissor lift for automotive EV service should come with, or at least be compatible with, a stack-adapter kit sized for those recesses. Ask the vendor to confirm the adapter set for the specific model mix you service. If you run a lot of Rivian, Lucid, or Ford Lightning traffic, that adapter kit is not optional — it is the difference between a smooth lift and a bent rocker.
