Picking a scissor lift for automotive work is not the same decision as picking a two-post, and every week we take calls from Ames-area shop owners who bring two-post questions to a scissor conversation. A recent one was an EV specialty shop in Ames setting up an oil change and fluid service bay. The owner kept circling back to symmetric versus asymmetric arms. That is a two-post question. Where the symmetric versus asymmetric myth came from

The symmetric versus asymmetric conversation belongs to two-post lifts, where swing arms rotate around the column base and can be set up to keep the vehicle centered (symmetric) or shifted rearward for easier door access (asymmetric). A scissor lift has none of that geometry. The scissor mechanism lifts a set of runways or a pair of pads straight up from underneath the frame. There are no arms, no rotation, no arm-length adjusters. What you get instead is a fixed pad or runway pattern that the vehicle drives or is jacked onto, and the lift raises it straight up. So when a shop owner asks us should I get symmetric or asymmetric for a scissor, the honest answer is neither, because that is a different lift category. The confusion usually comes from generic online guides that lump every lift into one buyer checklist. In real life, the scissor decision is about pad placement, runway length, mid-rise height, and full-rise clearance, not arm geometry.

What actually matters when choosing a scissor lift for automotive service

The real decisions for a scissor lift for automotive service come down to four questions. First, is it a pad-style mid-rise (which tops out around 40 to 48 inches) or a full-rise scissor with runways that lets a tech walk under? Second, what capacity: 6,000, 7,000, 10,000, or 12,000 pound gross? For a passenger-vehicle EV shop, 10,000 is more than enough. Third, portable or surface-mount or flush-mount recessed into the slab? Portable means you can push it out of the way and wash the floor. Flush-mount means a level bay when it is down. Fourth, where do the pads actually contact the vehicle? Not every scissor works with every unibody. We keep printed diagrams from Rotary and Challenger showing manufacturer-approved pad points, and we will not sell a lift to a shop until we have seen photos of the cars it will service. For an EV setup where you are doing lots of fluid work, the pad-touch pattern matters more than any other decision, and it has nothing to do with arm symmetry.

Oil changes and fluid service on a scissor, the ergonomic reality

Doing oil changes and fluid service on a scissor lift is genuinely comfortable if you pick the right height class. A full-rise scissor with runways gets a shop tech to a shoulder-height oil drain plug, and the runways let you walk under, roll a drain pan, and access the transmission and transfer case without ducking. A pad-style mid-rise is different. It tops out around 42 to 48 inches, which is chair height. That is actually great for wheel work, but for an EV shop doing coolant and reduction gear oil service on a Model Y or a Lightning, mid-rise leaves the tech bending. We steered the Ames EV shop toward a full-rise scissor because their techs would be under the vehicle several times a day. If you are mostly doing tires and brakes, a mid-rise is faster. EV weight, battery skid, and why capacity math changes

An EV specialty shop cannot copy capacity numbers from a legacy internal-combustion guide. A 2024 R1T pushes 7,000 pounds curb, a Lightning Extended Range is around 6,900, and a Cybertruck lands north of that. Add roll-in tool trays or a rooftop box the customer left on, and a 9,000-pound-rated lift is closer to the limit than the shop thinks. Every scissor lift for automotive service we spec for an EV shop gets rated 10,000 pounds minimum, and for shops that see truck EVs we go 12,000. The other EV-specific issue is battery skid clearance. EV battery packs run the full length of the wheelbase, and the pad contact points a manufacturer specifies for lift use are narrower than an internal-combustion frame. Miss those pads and you can crack the battery case, which is a five-figure mistake. We hand every EV-shop customer a laminated pad diagram and walk their newest tech through it in person on install day. It is part of the install, not an upsell.

Height positions and lock intervals, what a scissor actually gives you

One thing generic guides miss is that a scissor lift for automotive service has mechanical lock positions every couple inches over the full rise. Rotary and Challenger scissors we install click into safety locks about every two to two and a half inches through the full travel. That means a tech doing an oil change is not stuck between all-the-way-up and all-the-way-down. You can park the vehicle at the exact height that puts the drain plug at chest level. For a tall tech that is different from a short tech, and the ability to fine-tune height means less back strain over an eight-hour shift. This is one of the underrated advantages of a scissor over a two-post, especially for repetitive fluid work. The Ames EV shop tested three different heights on their first day and settled on a favorite for oil work, another for coolant service, and a third for tire rotations. Their old two-post could stop anywhere but was slower to set. On a scissor, the click-to-lock is instant.

Ames bay layout, what fits in a typical Iowa shop

Most Ames-area shop bays we walk into are 12 to 14 feet wide and 24 to 30 feet deep with 10 to 12 foot ceilings. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive service typically needs 10 feet of clear ceiling and a footprint of around 10-by-6 feet including approach. Portable versions can be repositioned; surface-mount stays put and anchors into the slab. For the Ames EV shop specifically, we recommended surface-mount because they had a fixed dedicated bay for fluid service and did not need portability. If you are a smaller Ames shop sharing bays between tire, general service, and alignment, portable makes more sense. And do not forget the electrical: most 10,000-pound scissors we install need 220V single-phase, which the older mid-Iowa shop panels handle, but we always check the panel before delivery. What we actually recommend for an Ames EV shop

For the EV shop we have been referencing throughout this article, we spec-ed a Rotary full-rise scissor rated 10,000 pounds, surface-mount, with extended runways for occasional light truck EV work. They passed on the mid-rise entirely because tech ergonomics mattered more than bay-space flexibility. Total install day was under six hours including panel check and anchor set.
