A collector in northwest Iowa called us in early 2025 to spec a scissor lift for automotive exhaust and driveline work on his personal fleet of five muscle cars and one restored pickup. He wanted the shop-quality experience in a home pole barn and he wanted to do the freight, forklift, and install logistics himself. This is the story of that first year: what he ordered, how the freight went, what happened on install day, and what the lift actually feels like after twelve months of ownership. Ordering and freight for a scissor lift for automotive collector use

Ordering a scissor lift for automotive collector use starts with the same conversation as a commercial customer: what vehicles, what work, what bay. This collector had a 30-by-40 pole building with 12-foot side walls and a 4-inch concrete slab poured in 2018. His fleet included two mid-60s muscle cars, a 70s Cutlass, an early-2000s Corvette, and a restored 60s pickup. All under 4,500 pounds each. He wanted to store one vehicle on the lift long-term and rotate maintenance across the fleet. We spec-ed a 10,000-pound Rotary full-rise scissor lift, surface-mount, standard-length runways. Freight from our Iowa warehouse to his address was around $350 LTL, with an additional $175 liftgate charge because the truck could not physically pull into his gravel driveway with the lift crate cantilevered. Total delivered cost sat at the top of the mid-tier bracket. He financed part of the purchase and paid cash for the balance.

Unloading with a forklift, what actually happened

The plan for unloading was that the collector would borrow a farm forklift from a neighbor. The reality was that the neighbor’s forklift had a 4,000-pound capacity and the crated scissor lift weighed roughly 2,800 pounds. That was within capacity but the forks were only 42 inches long and the crate footprint needed 48-inch forks to lift centrally. We had to reposition the forks under the corners of the crate, which put stress on the outboard edges and cracked one corner of the wooden shipping crate. The lift itself was fine. The freight company had already left. If you are a collector planning a scissor lift for automotive delivery in a rural setting, verify forklift capacity and fork length before delivery day. We now send this warning explicitly to every rural customer. A 5,000-pound rated telehandler with 60-inch forks handles this delivery cleanly. A skid steer with pallet forks may not. Rent for the day rather than borrow.

Install day in the pole barn

Install day for a scissor lift for automotive service in a home pole barn typically runs 6 to 8 hours if the concrete is right. The collector’s slab was 4 inches thick, 3,000 PSI, no rebar. Marginal. We recommended a slab evaluation and he chose to proceed on the existing slab because the load rating still met manufacturer minimums for a 10,000-pound scissor. We drilled eight anchor holes to a depth of 4.5 inches, installed epoxy-set stud anchors, and torqued to spec. Hydraulic hookup was straightforward: 220V single-phase from his existing panel, dedicated 30-amp breaker. The lift commissioned on the first try with a full up-down cycle test at rated load using the collector’s Corvette as ballast. Total time from crate open to commissioned lift was 7 hours with two of us on site. The collector helped with cleanup and paid a fair install rate for the day. First exhaust job on the new lift

The first exhaust job the collector did on the scissor lift for automotive service was a full cat-back replacement on the 70s Cutlass. Old exhaust was a rotted single-pipe system, replacement was a dual-outlet stainless setup. The full-rise scissor put the Cutlass at 66 inches undercar clearance, which was enough for the collector (6-foot-1) to work on the muffler hangers standing up with a mild neck bend, and enough to swing a MIG welder at the tailpipe joints. He reported this took him about half the time of the same job on his old ramps-and-jack-stands setup because he could walk around the vehicle at working height instead of crawling under. That is the whole point of a full-rise scissor for a collector doing occasional exhaust work. Wheels-free jacks were not needed for exhaust because the wheels do not come off. The runway scissor was the right pick for this use case.

Driveline access on a runway full-rise scissor

Driveline access on a runway full-rise scissor lift for automotive service is genuinely better than on ramps. The collector’s second job was a driveshaft U-joint replacement on the pickup. On his old jack-stand setup that job took him a full Saturday. On the scissor it took three hours including breaks. The transmission tail housing was at eye level, the driveshaft came out with the vehicle stable and level, and the U-joint press worked cleanly because he could stand upright and use both hands. He reported that the ability to raise and lower the vehicle in small increments (thanks to the scissor’s 2-inch mechanical lock spacing) let him fine-tune working height for each phase of the job. Ramps do not do that. Jack stands do not do that. A full-rise scissor with mechanical locks is a fundamentally different tool for driveline work than the makeshift alternatives most collectors have used previously.

Year one lessons and small surprises

Year one lessons from the northwest Iowa collector: first, the mechanical lock click positions become second nature within a month. He no longer thinks about height selection, just clicks to a familiar spot. Second, the lift is quieter than he expected. Motor noise from a commercial-grade Rotary scissor is well under conversation volume. Third, hydraulic fluid needs to be checked more often than he initially thought. He tops it off about twice a year. Fourth, the storage-under-lift use case worked out: he stores the Corvette on the lift at full height through winter with the pickup underneath for daily driver use. Fifth, one small surprise: the lift’s floor footprint takes up more usable bay space than the brochure implied because of the approach ramps and safety cordon around the lift when raised. He reallocated a tool cart to compensate. Small adjustment, not a real problem.

Would he do it again

Twelve months in, the collector says he would buy the same scissor lift for automotive collector use again. The only thing he would change is the freight logistics: he would rent a proper telehandler for delivery day instead of borrowing an undersized farm forklift. Everything else, from the model choice to the install to the year-one utilization, has been what he wanted. The lift cost him roughly the price of a good used pickup and has saved him roughly the same amount in labor he did not have to pay a shop for suspension, exhaust, and driveline work across his fleet. It stores his Corvette through winter. It stays in his pole barn for the next decade.
