Almost every European-marque specialty shop we visit in Ankeny has the same wrong idea about a scissor lift for automotive CV axle and half-shaft work: they think the scissor will not give them enough wheels-free clearance to pull an axle, and they think the hydraulic cylinder is going to weep oil on the shop floor at year three no matter what they do. Both of those beliefs are common, and both of them are wrong in specific ways that are worth spelling out. Myth One: A Scissor Lift For Automotive CV Work Cannot Do Wheels-Free
This is the biggest myth. A modern full-rise scissor lift for automotive service can do wheels-free work just as effectively as a 2-post, provided you spec the rolling-jack option or the drop-bar assist. The rolling jacks sit inside the runway wells, extend outward under the jacking points on the unibody, and lift the wheels clear so the axle nut and control arm can come out. On a European sedan with proper OEM jacking pads, that setup is faster than a 2-post because the technician does not have to swing arms into position and set the pads by hand.
Where the myth comes from is old scissors from twenty years ago that were solid-runway with no jacks. Those still exist in some old shops and they earned the reputation. Today’s Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak scissors sold for automotive service ship with well cutouts for rolling jacks as a factory or dealer-installed option. If you are pricing a scissor for a European marque shop, spec the jacks up front. Adding them later is possible but more expensive than the factory bundle, and the wells have to be aligned during install.
Myth Two: The Cylinder Will Weep At Year Three No Matter What
This one is stubborn because it has a grain of truth. A poorly maintained hydraulic cylinder on any lift will weep eventually. The myth is that the weep is inevitable at year three on a scissor lift for automotive shop use. It is not. The wiper seal on the cylinder rod is doing 99 percent of the work of keeping the cylinder dry, and if you protect that wiper seal from grit, the cylinder will run seven to ten years before the first rebuild.
Protecting the wiper is not complicated. Wipe the exposed cylinder rod with a lint-free rag once a month. Do not spray degreaser directly on the rod, because the degreaser will strip the film of hydraulic oil that lubricates the wiper. Do not park the lift fully raised for more than an overnight, because the exposed rod collects dust. Change the hydraulic fluid at the manufacturer’s recommended interval and do not top off with mystery oil. Do those four things and the year-three weep goes away. We have twenty-year-old scissors in Iowa shops still running the original cylinders because the shop did those four things.
Myth Three: Rebuild Kits Are Only From The Manufacturer
Every European shop that comes to us for a scissor lift for automotive service asks about parts availability for the day the cylinder finally does need a rebuild. The myth is that you are locked into the manufacturer for the rebuild kit and that the kit is expensive and back-ordered. The truth is that most scissor lift cylinders use industry-standard rod diameters and standard-profile seals, and a good hydraulic shop can build you a kit from off-the-shelf seal stock for a fraction of the OEM price.
That said, we stock the OEM seal kits for every major brand and can ship them same-day out of Ames. The reason to buy the OEM kit is not exclusivity, it is documented compatibility. When the kit shows up, every seal is the right durometer for the cylinder pressure and every part is labeled. When you build a kit at a hydraulic supply house, you have to know the exact seal profile and rod diameter, and one wrong seal will cost you a second teardown a week later. For a shop that rebuilds a cylinder once every seven years, the OEM kit is worth the small premium.
Myth Four: European Cars Are Too Low For A Scissor
Some European sedans, particularly M-cars and RS-line Audis, sit low enough that the approach angle on a stock scissor lift runway is tight. The myth is that this makes a scissor impractical for a European specialty shop. The reality is that low-profile scissors exist specifically to solve this problem, and the ramps hinge to 6 to 7 degrees when the lift is fully lowered on the better models.
If your shop sees a lot of lowered cars, spec the low-profile scissor with the extended approach ramps. Some models also offer removable spoiler kits and drive-on wedge assists. We have installed low-profile scissors in Ankeny for a European specialty shop that sees Porsche 911 Turbos and lowered BMW M3s daily, and the lift handles them fine. What does not work is trying to drive an aftermarket-lowered car onto a stock full-rise scissor with a 10-degree ramp. Choose the right lift for the customer base and the ramp problem disappears.
Myth Five: Scissor Lifts Cannot Handle Torque On Axle Nuts
A CV axle nut on a European sedan takes 150 to 200 lb-ft to install and a lot more to break loose after a decade in the field. The myth is that a scissor lift for automotive service is not stable enough to handle that kind of impact-gun rocking without unlocking a safety latch or shifting the vehicle. The reality is that a properly locked full-rise scissor is more torsionally stable than a 2-post, because the load path goes straight down through the pantograph into anchors on either side of the vehicle rather than out through swinging arms.
What matters is that the lift is actually locked when the tech is impact-gunning. The safety latch on a scissor engages every 2 to 3 inches of rise. The tech should raise the lift to working height, lower it a hair to seat the latch, and then confirm the latch is engaged by pulling down on the control. That two-second confirmation eliminates the common failure mode of impact-torque work causing runway sway, and it is the same procedure you should teach every tech regardless of what brand of lift is in the bay.
Myth Six: Ankeny Buildings Do Not Have Enough Ceiling Height
Full-rise on a scissor lift for automotive service lands the vehicle roof at about 74 inches plus vehicle height. For a typical BMW at 58 inches tall, that puts the roof at 132 inches or 11 feet. Most Ankeny commercial buildings have 12-foot ceilings, so the fit is fine. The myth is that you also need clearance for an overhead cross-tube. You do not, because a scissor does not have one. That is actually one of the scissor’s advantages over a 2-post in a lower-ceilinged bay.
What you do need to think about is lighting and any HVAC ductwork over the bay. Ceiling lights sitting at 10 feet get bumped by tall trucks on a full-rise scissor even without a cross-tube. Move the fixtures to the perimeter of the bay, use gooseneck LED work lights instead of ceiling grids, and you will never have a fixture-versus-fender incident.
