This is not glamorous. It is the paperwork, the pallet dimensions, the forklift capacity, and the dispatch mismatches that separate a smooth install day from a hostile one. What A Scissor Lift For Automotive Service Actually Ships As
A full-rise scissor lift for automotive work typically ships as two or three pallets. The pantograph and runways come banded to one large pallet weighing 1,500 to 1,900 pounds. The power unit, hoses, and small parts come on a second pallet weighing 300 to 500 pounds. On some models the ramps and accessories are on a third pallet at 200 to 300 pounds. Total shipping weight lands between 2,000 and 2,700 pounds and total shipping cube is somewhere around 60 to 90 cubic feet.
The pallets are typically 48 by 96 inches for the runway and 48 by 48 for the power unit. Those dimensions matter because a standard commercial door is 96 inches wide and a standard freight elevator is 48 by 60. If your bay’s door is standard commercial width and your shop is on grade with no elevator, the pallets go through the door without disassembly. If you have a narrower door or your bay is on a second floor, we need to know before we ship because the pallets have to be broken down at the delivery dock and moved piece by piece.
Curbside Versus Liftgate Versus Inside Delivery
The LTL carriers who move a scissor lift for automotive service offer three delivery modes and each has a price. Curbside delivery is the cheapest. The driver drops the freight at the end of your driveway or the loading dock, and you take it from there. Liftgate delivery adds a fee and gives you a hydraulic gate on the back of the truck that lowers the pallets to ground level. Inside delivery adds a bigger fee and requires the driver to bring the freight through your door and set it on your shop floor.
For a Council Bluffs shop with a forklift on site, curbside is fine and saves the extra fees. For a home garage or a shop without a forklift, liftgate is usually the sweet spot because you can pallet-jack the freight from the driveway into the shop for a few hundred dollars less than inside delivery. Even if the forklift is rated for the weight, the leverage is wrong and the operator ends up making three-point turns to walk the pallet across the shop. That is how a runway gets dropped and a $12,000 lift becomes a $12,000 lift with a bent runway.
The right setup is a forklift with 48-inch or longer forks, rated for 3,000 pounds or more at the load center, with a spotter on the ground. Most Council Bluffs and Omaha area shops we install in have at least one truck-mounted forklift that can handle this. If you do not have equipment on site, tell us and we will build a rental into the freight package. A one-day forklift rental is a reasonable expense compared to bending a runway or dropping a power unit.
Delivery Timing And Weather Windows
A scissor lift for automotive service typically ships from the factory or the regional distribution warehouse within a week of order, and transit time from Ohio or California to Council Bluffs runs three to seven business days. We schedule delivery in coordination with your install day, ideally so the freight arrives 24 to 48 hours before install so the crew can uncrate and inspect for freight damage before we roll trucks.
Weather matters in Iowa. A December delivery to Council Bluffs can hit a snow-and-ice window that shuts down the trucking company for a day or two. We build a weather buffer into every winter install and we do not scold the carrier when they slide a day. If you are timing an install for a specific business reason (a lease starting, a bay going online, a competitor opening down the street), plan the install for April through October when weather delays are rare. Winter installs happen and they go fine, but the calendar has less give.
Freight Inspection And Damage Claims
The scissor lift for automotive shop use that arrives with a bent corner or a torn shrink wrap needs to be documented before the driver leaves. That is not paranoia, that is the freight-claim process. Take five to ten photos of every pallet on the trailer before it comes off. Take photos of the shrink wrap intact. Note any visible damage on the bill of lading before you sign it. If you sign clean and then discover damage after the driver leaves, the claim becomes much harder to file.
When we ship a lift, we email the customer a freight-inspection checklist the day before delivery. It is a 12-item list of what to check, in what order, before the driver drives away. That checklist has saved several Council Bluffs and Omaha customers from covering damage that was clearly the carrier’s fault. Follow it. It takes ten minutes at the truck and protects tens of thousands of dollars of equipment.
Storage Between Delivery And Install
If your scissor lift for automotive service work arrives before the install crew, you need somewhere to store it. Inside a heated shop is ideal. Outside under a tarp is acceptable for a few days but not weeks. The concern is not the paint, it is the hydraulic fluid in the power unit, the electrical connections, and the potential for condensation to form inside the reservoir when temperatures swing.
If you have to leave a lift outside for more than 72 hours, cover it with a real tarp (not a plastic sheet), tilt the pallets slightly to shed water, and check on it after every rainstorm. Never let a lift sit through freezing rain. If your delivery window is far ahead of install day and you cannot store it inside, tell us and we can hold the freight at our warehouse in Ames for a modest fee. That is often cheaper than the risk of weather damage.
Install Day: Timing, Crew, And What The Customer Should Have Ready
