An independent pro shop owner near the Iowa-Missouri border asked us last fall to lay out a scissor lift / portable against a two-post for his alignment work, and to specifically walk through the symmetric versus asymmetric arm choice on the two-post side. This is that side-by-side comparison, written the way we walked through it in his shop — not a spec-sheet dump but an honest look at which configuration wins for which job.

The starting question — is a scissor lift / portable an alignment platform?

Short answer: no, not in the traditional sense. Traditional alignment work happens on a scissor alignment rack with runways, turnplates, and rear slip plates — a very different animal from a portable mid-rise scissor. What the pro shop owner actually asked was whether he could do a lot of alignment-adjacent work — tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, camber shim swaps — on a scissor lift / portable and save his flat alignment rack for the calibrated final measurements. That question has a real yes. A portable mid-rise scissor gets suspension components at working height quickly, lets you set up a caster/camber gauge check without a full alignment console, and rolls out of the way when the alignment rack is what’s needed. It is a complement to an alignment platform, not a replacement. On his floor plan we sketched a scissor in the front bay and his existing rack in the rear.

Where a two-post beats a scissor for alignment-adjacent work

A two-post beats the scissor lift / portable on three specific things. First, wheel-off access — on a two-post the wheels dangle free, no deck under them, and you can spin a hub freely for bearing feel. Second, upper-arm and strut work — the two-post’s overhead access lets you work chest-high without a lot of stooping. Third, full-lift height — you can stand under the car comfortably for undercarriage inspection. Where a scissor still wins is speed of the routine job: brake pull, tire rotation, oil change, bushings that don’t require wheel-off. If a shop’s alignment-adjacent workload is 70% wheels-on and 30% wheels-off, the scissor lift / portable makes more sense as the primary bay lift and the two-post as backup. If it’s the reverse, the two-post wins. The owner’s ratio came out roughly 55/45. Close call.

Symmetric two-post arms — when they’re the right pick

On the two-post side, symmetric means the columns are set 90 degrees to the drive-through axis and both front and rear arms are the same length. The vehicle sits centered between the columns. Symmetric is the classic setup, it accommodates door swings on standard sedans and light trucks well, and it puts the vehicle’s center of gravity right in the middle of the lift’s pickup arc. For shops that see mostly full-size trucks, vans, and heavier vehicles, symmetric is often the honest recommendation. The owner runs about 30% pickup trucks, 20% SUVs, and 50% sedans and small crossovers. Symmetric would serve the truck work well but pinch driver-side door swing on any car with a longer front door — think older coupes, some current Mustangs and Camaros, and the taller-door sedans that keep showing up on lots.

Asymmetric two-post arms — when they win

Asymmetric rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms. The result is the vehicle sits back on the lift, giving you door clearance in front and better center-of-gravity balance on cars. For a shop with a car-heavy mix, asymmetric is almost always the pick. The tradeoff is that heavier trucks can push the pickup points to their limits on an asymmetric setup, especially on longer-wheelbase full-size pickups. The owner’s 30% truck load was on the edge. We looked at his actual truck list — mostly Silverado 1500 and F-150, no dually work — and told him asymmetric would handle it fine. If he’d been doing dually service or medium-duty, we’d have flipped the answer.

Cost, floor space, and permanent-vs-portable tradeoffs

A quality two-post asymmetric install lands in the mid four-figure range for the lift plus install labor, and it is bolted to the floor for good. A scissor lift / portable in a comparable capacity runs a bit lower for the lift and dramatically lower for install because there’s no through-anchor drilling and no long electrical pull if it can run single-phase. But floor space math is where the scissor wins. A two-post permanently occupies a bay’s footprint. A scissor lift / portable can roll out of the way when you need the bay for tire storage, a paint booth entry, or a parts staging area. The comparison table we walked through on the whiteboard

Wheel-off suspension work: two-post asymmetric wins clearly. Brake pulls and tire rotations: scissor lift / portable wins on speed, two-post ties on completeness. Oil changes and fluid service: scissor wins on ergonomics for shorter techs; two-post ties. Full undercarriage inspection: two-post wins on standing room. Alignment-adjacent camber and toe checks with wheels on: scissor wins. Floor plan flexibility: scissor wins outright. Heavy truck routine service: two-post symmetric wins if trucks are a majority; asymmetric holds up if they’re a minority. Long-term parts availability from Rotary or Challenger: even, both platforms have healthy support. When we finished the board he had a decision framework, not a decision. He took a week to sit with it and called back on a Tuesday.

What the shop actually ordered and why

He ordered the scissor lift / portable first — a Rotary 9,000-pound mid-rise with rolling casters — and put the two-post decision on a six-month timeline. His logic was that the scissor covered the majority of daily work immediately, freed him from bolt-down anchoring while he considered rearranging the shop, and left the two-post purchase for a moment when he had more clarity on his truck-versus-car ratio. At month six he called and ordered a two-post asymmetric to complement, sited in the rear bay so his alignment rack still had a straight drive-on approach. He runs both lifts daily now.
