A rural farm shop owner on the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us in early spring about a scissor lift / portable option for his outbuilding, and unlike most first-time buyers, his first question was about the twenty-year picture, not the sticker price. He’d been burning shoulders under jack stands for a decade doing oil pan gasket work on his own trucks and equipment, and he wanted a lift he wouldn’t have to replace once. At Auto Lift Services we’ve sold a lot of lifts to farm operations, and this is the pre-purchase checklist we walked him through.

Item one: capacity margin, not capacity minimum

Farmers who buy a scissor lift / portable at their exact heaviest-vehicle weight regret it inside five years. Trucks get heavier as configurations change. A one-ton dually today is not the same weight as a one-ton dually was in 2010. Add attachments, service bodies, or a slide-in camper and you can be over a lift’s rated capacity without noticing. Our rule for farm shops: pick a lift rated at least 25% above your current heaviest vehicle. If you routinely lift a 6,500-pound crew-cab pickup, buy a 9,000-pound lift, not a 7,000. If you lift heavier one-tons or medium-duty service trucks, look at 12,000-pound capacity. The extra rating is not just about single-use safety — it’s about component life. A cylinder running at 70% of rated capacity lasts substantially longer than one running at 95%. Over twenty years, that’s the difference between one seal kit and three.

Item two: honest lift height for your actual jobs

Full-rise portables sound appealing until you realize you rarely need chest-high working room. For oil pan gasket work, most farmers work best at the second, third, or fourth locking notch — roughly 18 to 36 inches of deck height. That’s a mid-rise scissor lift / portable, not a full-rise. Full-rise units cost more, weigh more, take up more storage space when stowed, and are harder to move. If your workload is oil-and-fluid focused with occasional wheel work, a mid-rise is the honest pick. If you also do full-height suspension pulls on tall trucks, consider a full-rise with an eye toward whether your outbuilding ceiling supports it. Measure the ceiling at the intended lift position before you spec anything.

Item three: power — single-phase, always, on a farm

Rural farm shops almost never have 3-phase electrical. Do not buy a lift that requires it unless you’re prepared to run a phase converter, which is another maintenance item on your list. A scissor lift / portable in the 9,000-to-12,000 pound range is available in single-phase 220V configurations from every brand we sell. Confirm before you order. Our farm-shop buyer had 220V already run to his outbuilding for a welder; he was fine. If you’re in the planning stage and pouring a slab or wiring an outbuilding, run 220V to the intended lift position now. It’s cheap while the walls are open and expensive after drywall goes up. Item four: parts and seal-kit availability in year twelve

Twenty-year total cost of ownership is a real question. Cylinders will need seals somewhere between year six and year ten under moderate use. Hydraulic hoses fail somewhere between year eight and year fifteen. Approach ramps get scuffed and eventually need replacement. If you buy a scissor lift / portable from a brand with no U.S. parts presence, you will hit a wall around year seven or eight. We only sell brands whose parts we can pull off a shelf or order in a week — Rotary and Challenger are our commercial defaults. The farm-shop owner asked us specifically to name what he’d be spending on parts over twenty years for a Rotary 9,000-pound mid-rise. Ballpark: one seal-kit rebuild around year eight, one hydraulic hose replacement around year twelve, and consumable ramp pads twice. Under $2,000 total, spread over two decades.

Item five: floor and slab — adequate, not overbuilt

A scissor lift / portable doesn’t through-anchor, so the slab requirements are lighter than a two-post but still real. Four inches of 3,000 psi concrete with #4 rebar on a 12-inch grid is our minimum recommendation for 9,000-pound-class portables in Iowa and Illinois farm-shop conditions. If your existing floor is 6 inches with reinforcement, you’re overbuilt and fine. If it’s a thin residential-grade pour with no rebar and visible cracks, we recommend a targeted section replacement before installing a lift — not because the lift will punch through, but because dynamic loading over years will worsen existing cracks and create a wobble you don’t want. The farm-shop owner’s pour was 5 inches with rebar from a chicken coop renovation two years earlier. Perfect.

Item six: portability planning for a working farm

The whole point of a scissor lift / portable is moving it. On a working farm, that means moving it out of the way when you park a combine or a large piece of equipment inside during storm season, or moving it to a different building for a specific job. Verify that your outbuilding thresholds and door widths allow the deck to roll through when stowed. Verify that if you plan to move between buildings, the path is smooth enough — gravel yards are a no. Ask us about a heavier-duty caster upgrade if you know you’ll be moving frequently. Item seven: the actual twenty-year spend

Here’s the honest twenty-year picture we drew up for him. Lift purchase plus install: mid four figures, one time. Power drop (already in): zero. Annual walk-through with us (recommended, not required): low three figures per year for the years he chose to book us. Seal kit and rebuild around year eight: mid three figures for parts and roughly a half-day of labor if he did it himself. Hydraulic hose replacement around year twelve: low three figures. Ramp pad refresh twice: sub-hundred each. Adjusted for two decades of moderate use, his twenty-year total cost of ownership for the scissor lift / portable landed comfortably under 1.5x the initial purchase. Divided across twenty years of oil pan gaskets, brake pulls, and general farm-shop work, it’s the cheapest hourly labor-saving device in his outbuilding.
