A race team crew chief who winters his cars in a pole barn in eastern Nebraska called us before Thanksgiving with a specific question: he wanted a 2 post car lift for seasonal storage and winter chassis work on two circle-track cars, and his ceiling was tight — maybe 12 feet at the low point, with a rolling barn door that ate a few more inches when open. Could we spec a lift that would actually raise a car high enough to work under, or was he stuck on jack stands for another season? This is the decision tree we walked him through, and it applies to any tight-ceiling storage barn from Grand Island to Council Bluffs. Start with a real measurement, not a rough guess
Every low-ceiling 2 post car lift conversation has to start with a laser measure or a folding ruler, not the crew chief’s mental image of his barn. On the phone with the eastern Nebraska team, we asked for four numbers: ceiling height at the lowest truss chord, ceiling height at the peak, height of the barn door track when the door is fully open, and the height of any lights or obstructions in the working envelope. He came back with 12 feet 2 inches at the low chord, 15 feet at the peak, and 11 feet 4 inches of clear track when the door was rolled up.
That is a tight ceiling, but it is workable. The trick is choosing the right column height and configuration. A standard 12-foot column on a commercial two-post will not fit under a 12-foot 2-inch chord — the overhead beam or shutoff bar will hit. We need to go shorter, which usually means either a 10-foot column configuration or a baseplate design that eliminates the overhead crossbar. Both are real options in the market. Not every 2 post car lift comes in both configurations, but the ones we stock do.
Overhead vs baseplate: the fundamental tight-ceiling choice
The overhead configuration on a two-post runs the equalizer cables and hydraulic hoses through a crossbar at the top of the columns. That crossbar adds a few inches of overall height and typically has the shutoff bar mounted to it. If your ceiling cannot accommodate the crossbar clearance plus the vehicle rise, overhead is out. The baseplate configuration runs the equalizer and hoses through a plate at the floor between the columns instead. That eliminates the overhead crossbar and gains you 8 to 12 inches of clearance depending on the model.
The trade-off is that a baseplate adds a slight floor obstruction between the columns — the plate itself is only 4 to 6 inches tall, but it is a trip risk if you are running creepers and jacks in and out of the bay constantly. For a race team storage barn where the cars come in, get parked on the lift for the season, and come out in spring, the baseplate is barely noticed. For a busy commercial repair shop where the tech is constantly rolling equipment, overhead is usually the better call. The right 2 post car lift geometry depends on how you actually use the bay.
The 10-foot column option and how much rise you actually need
A shorter column gives you less rise. A standard 12-foot column typically delivers 70 to 74 inches of vehicle rise; a 10-foot column drops that to 60 to 64 inches. That is 6 to 10 inches less headroom under the car when you crawl under. For a race car chassis job — pulling shocks, checking suspension geometry, inspecting the rollcage from underneath — 60 inches of rise is workable but tight. A 6-foot-tall crew chief will have his head brushing the floor pan on a normal-height sedan.
We asked the eastern Nebraska guy how tall he was and what the cars were. He is 5’10” and the cars are circle-track modifieds sitting fairly low to the ground. That combination works with a 10-foot column and about 62 inches of rise — he will be able to work under the cars comfortably, though not luxuriously. If he were 6’4″ or working on lifted trucks, we would have pushed him toward finding a way to raise the ceiling instead. Honest advice on a 2 post car lift includes telling a customer when the space is just too tight for what they want to do.
Door swing and clearance during raise
His barn door was the second clearance concern. The rolling door tracks up flat overhead when open, and the effective clear height under the track is 11 feet 4 inches. That is lower than his truss chord. If the door is open while the lift is at full rise, the shutoff bar or vehicle roof could hit the track. The fix is procedural: close the door before raising the lift to full rise, or only raise partway when the door is open. We drew that on paper for him so his crew has the rule in writing.
Baseplate configuration helps here too, because there is no overhead shutoff bar hanging into the door-track zone. On his 2 post car lift install, the baseplate design means the door can be open at any lift height without a bar collision. The car itself still has to clear the track at full rise, but that is a smaller concern than the bar-and-track collision that would happen with overhead. Door swing is one of those specs that shows up on almost no brochure and matters on almost every install. Ask about it before you buy.
Concrete under a race team storage barn
Barn slabs are notoriously variable. Some are five inches of good pour with rebar; some are three inches of scratch coat over compacted gravel. Anchoring a 2 post car lift requires a real slab — at minimum four inches of 3,000 psi mix, six inches is better. We asked the eastern Nebraska crew chief for photos of any existing anchor points, crack patterns, or expansion joints in his slab. He sent them, and we could see clean pour patterns and no obvious cracking. We recommended a rebar scan on install day to confirm.
If the scan had come back thin or bad, we would have refused the install and quoted a saw-cut and repour instead. It is not worth mounting a 10,000-pound-rated lift to a slab that will not hold. We have turned down installs in beautiful barns because the concrete was not adequate, and we will do the same for you. A good 2 post car lift on a bad slab is a worse investment than a jack stand on a good slab. Concrete first, hardware second. Always.
Capacity when a race car spends months on the arms
His race cars are around 2,900 pounds each — well under the 10,000-pound capacity of the lift he was considering. That is fine. But he asked whether leaving the car on the arms for months at a time during winter storage was hard on the lift. The honest answer is not really, provided the lift is sitting on safety cams and the hydraulic pressure is not holding the load. The cams are mechanical positive locks; they can hold indefinitely without wear. The hydraulic cylinder should not be under continuous load, and that is what the cams prevent.
He also asked whether he could lower the car partway and leave it at partial rise for months. Yes, on cams at any positive-lock height. What you do not want to do is leave the car dangling under hydraulic pressure alone with the cams disengaged. Always onto safeties for long-term storage. That habit is the same as for a running shop, and it is the reason the safety-cam system exists on every ALI-certified 2 post car lift we sell. Use the cams; they are free insurance against a slow leak that would otherwise drop the car overnight.

That combination fits under his ceiling, works with his door swing, and gives him enough rise for the winter chassis work he wants to do. He signed the order and we installed in early December, before his winter storage rotation began.
