The most common phone call we get from rural farm shops in east-central Iowa about a 2 post car lift is not about brand, capacity, or price. It is about concrete. “Will it hold?” is the first question, and honestly, it should be. At Auto Lift Services in Ames, Iowa, we install, service, and stock parts for every major lift brand, and we have walked more than a few farmers around the perimeter of a pole-barn slab explaining why a 1978 pour that has done fine under a Massey Ferguson for forty years is not automatically ready for a 2 post car lift under a fully loaded pickup. This is our pre-purchase checklist, written for the alignment-and-general-service farm shop that plans to do this once and do it right.

Checklist Item 1: Measure Your Actual Slab Thickness
Nobody knows how thick their farm shop slab actually is until they drill a test hole. The stated pour on a rural building of any age is almost never what the finished slab measures — freeze-thaw settling, subsoil movement, and cost-cutting during the original construction all conspire to make the reality thinner than the memory. Before you order any 2 post car lift, drill a one-inch core somewhere unobtrusive (a corner near a wall works fine) and measure. Every major manufacturer requires four inches of concrete minimum for the anchor system to hold under load.
If you measure four inches or more of solid concrete, you are on solid ground — literally. If you measure less, you have three options: pour a thicker pad under the columns (an eight-inch, four-by-four-foot pad tied to the existing slab with rebar dowels), re-pour the whole footprint of the lift, or replace the entire slab. None of these are pleasant expenses, but discovering the problem after your columns pull loose is much worse. Checklist Item 2: Confirm the Concrete Strength
Thickness is only half the answer. Compressive strength — measured in PSI at 28 days — is the other half. Manufacturers spec 3,000 PSI minimum for a 2 post car lift, and higher for heavier-capacity lifts. Older farm shop slabs were commonly poured at 2,500 or even 2,000 PSI to save money, and even a properly reinforced 2,500 PSI slab is below the anchor manufacturer’s rating for wedge-type anchors under repeated load.
If your slab is old enough that the original spec is lost to memory, and if a core test is not practical, treat it as 2,500 PSI and plan accordingly. That usually means either a pad replacement under each column or a Schwaben-style epoxy-set anchor system that has better performance in weaker concrete. We stock both anchor systems and can recommend which to use based on your slab age. Older poured slabs in central and east-central Iowa are often actually fine because the original mix was over-designed by the farm co-op that poured them, but never assume — verify or adjust the anchor plan.
Checklist Item 3: Rebar and Wire-Mesh Reinforcement
Reinforcement is the third variable. A properly built shop slab has either #4 rebar on 18-inch centers or a welded wire-mesh grid tied through the pour. Farm shop slabs from the 1960s and 1970s frequently have neither — they are simple three or four-inch slabs poured over compacted gravel with no reinforcement at all. An unreinforced slab under a 2 post car lift will crack radially from the anchor points the first time you swing a fully loaded truck out to the side, and once it cracks, the anchor holds by friction only.
A reinforced slab is not the same as guaranteed. Rebar corrodes, wire mesh sinks during the pour if the concrete crew is careless, and freeze-thaw expansion cracks concrete around any inclusions. What you want to know is whether the slab has structural continuity across at least a four-by-four-foot area centered on each column. If it does, the anchors have something to spread the load into. If it does not, you are anchoring into gravel with a concrete shell. The pad-replacement route with proper rebar remains the reliable fix.
Checklist Item 4: Slope, Level, and Alignment-Ready Flatness
Farm shops often have a slight slope toward the door for drainage, which is fine for tractors and combines but is not fine for a 2 post car lift you will use for alignment work. A lift installed on a sloped surface will lean slightly under load, and while the safety system will still work, the alignment machine will read the slope as an angle change. We recommend measuring slope with a four-foot level across the footprint of the lift. Anything more than one-eighth inch drop in four feet is problematic for alignment; anything more than one-quarter inch requires shimming or grinding.
Shimming under the columns is the standard fix and every major installer carries steel shim plates that make up an eighth-inch to a half-inch. Beyond that, we grind the high side flat before install. If you are pouring a new pad for the lift, ask the concrete crew to finish it dead flat with a laser and let them know the intended use. A farm bay slab that is one inch off across a bay is normal; a lift footprint that is one inch off is not workable for alignment. Read the alignment-flatness article for detail.
Checklist Item 5: Distance from Walls and Other Obstructions
Every 2 post car lift needs clearance around the columns for the arm swing and for the vehicle body. The minimum spec is roughly 40 inches from column centerline to the nearest wall on each side, plus enough depth behind and in front of the lift to fit the longest vehicle you will service. On a typical farm shop with a 24-foot bay depth, you can fit a lift and still park a diesel pickup in front of it with the door closed, but only if the lift is centered on the depth.
Overhead obstructions are the other checklist item here. Farm shop ceilings are often criss-crossed with trusses, lights hanging from chains, sprinkler heads that were added after the fact, and electrical conduit run wherever was convenient. Before you order, use a laser measure to check the height of everything within the lift footprint — not just the lowest joist. We have had farm customers discover a light fixture hanging one inch too low for their standard-height overhead lift after the lift was already on the truck. Verify before the freight rolls.
Checklist Item 6: Electrical Ready for the Motor
The lift motor needs a dedicated 220V single-phase or 208V three-phase circuit depending on the model. Farm shops are often wired for a mix of 110V outlets and a 220V compressor circuit, and that compressor circuit is sometimes routed on wire not sized for continuous motor load at full amperage. A 2 post car lift startup current will spike above the running amperage for a fraction of a second, and if your breaker and wire are borderline, the lift will nuisance-trip on cold mornings — exactly when you have work stacked up.
Have your electrician run a dedicated 30-amp circuit with 10-gauge minimum wire (8-gauge if the run is longer than 50 feet) directly from the panel to a wall-mounted disconnect near the lift. Do not share the circuit with anything else. Slow-blow breakers are the correct choice to absorb the startup surge. The whole electrical upgrade typically runs $300 to $700 in materials plus a few hours of labor. Budget it as part of the install cost, not as an afterthought.
Checklist Item 7: The Final Walk-Through Before You Order
Once you have items one through six checked, do one final walk of the bay with a tape measure, a level, and this checklist printed on paper. Measure column-to-column drive-through width (should be 100+ inches for most 10K models), overall bay depth (26 feet is comfortable), ceiling height (12 feet minimum for standard overhead, or specify a low-ceiling or baseplate variant), and the path from the shop door to the install location. That path matters because the lift columns arrive on a pallet and need to be dollied into position — a doorway that is too narrow or a turn that is too tight adds hours to install day.
