For a shop specializing in exhaust and driveline, clear-floor overhead is the right architecture, not baseplate.
Clear-floor overhead configurations put all the hydraulic and safety lines through the overhead cross-member and leave the floor between the columns completely open. On a Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger CL10, that clear zone is roughly 100 inches wide by 90 inches deep — enough room for a full driveshaft workbench between the columns of the lift. Cedar Falls shops with 12 feet or more of ceiling should default to clear-floor. Ceiling Height and Exhaust Header Clearance

For an exhaust-heavy shop, we recommend a full 13 feet (156 inches) of ceiling minimum. That gives you clearance to work on lifted trucks with tall exhaust systems (dual-stack, aftermarket turbo-back, high-clearance off-road exhaust), and it lets you lift a work truck high enough to be truly ergonomic — which matters because your technician is under the vehicle for a long stretch on any single job. If your Cedar Falls building has 12 feet, we can still make it work with careful lift-height management, but 13 feet or more is the ideal target.
Symmetric Arms and Long Vehicle Access
Exhaust systems on modern trucks and older muscle cars alike run the full length of the vehicle, from header collector to tailpipe tip. To work on them efficiently, the technician needs to be able to move a floor stand from front to rear without dodging arms. Symmetric arm geometry (equal front and rear length) actually helps here because the arms tuck cleanly against the columns and clear the floor for long tools. The trade-off is door-clearance for the passenger and driver — on a modern sedan, asymmetric gives more door swing. If your shop is 80 percent trucks and 20 percent cars, symmetric wins overall. Concrete Slab Depth for Cedar Falls Buildings
Cedar Falls has a mix of building ages, and slab depth is not universal. Buildings from the late 1990s and later typically meet the four-inch, 3,000 PSI minimum with rebar or wire mesh. Buildings from the 1970s and 1980s are often four inches but with no reinforcement, and buildings older than that are frequently three inches or less. A gear-driven restraint engages automatically the moment the arm has weight on it — no pin to remember, no spring to fatigue. Rotary and Challenger both include gear-driven as standard on their higher trim levels, and it is a worthwhile upgrade on any lift that will do heavy exhaust work. Combined with the mechanical safety locks, the gear restraints mean the technician can concentrate on the exhaust weld instead of glancing up at the arms every ninety seconds. That is worth real money over years of daily use.
Ventilation and Exhaust Extraction with a 2 Post Car Lift
An exhaust-focused shop often runs engines with the vehicle raised on the lift, which is the biggest single source of shop carbon-monoxide exposure.
