Why a 2 post car lift belongs in a heavy-duty truck bay
Even in a shop that lives on medium and heavy-duty trucks, a dedicated 2 post car lift changes what you can profitably take on. Restoration and metal fabrication rarely fits the same bay you use for a Peterbilt PM service. The floor space you need for a rotisserie or a fixture table gets eaten fast by parts carts, welding leads, and a chassis that has to sit somewhere while you cut and weld. Raising the car up on posts and clearing the floor beneath it is the difference between a job that finishes on schedule and one that eats a bay for three months.
We see this pattern with restoration and metal work shops from Rochester to Mankato. The owner tells us the truck bays run fine, but the side projects – a customer’s Bronco, a shop truck getting a floor pan swap – keep drifting because there is no lift dedicated to them. Adding the right two-post into a corner with 12 to 14 feet of clear height gives that work a permanent home. It also frees the truck bays from doubling as passenger-vehicle bays, which is where a lot of daily bottlenecks live. Mapping the lift-bay layout before you order
Before we quote a single 2 post car lift, we ask for a rough sketch of the bay – ceiling height, door width, column spacing, and where your welding gas, air drops, and 220-volt receptacles already run. Restoration and metal work depends on being able to walk around the vehicle with a MIG gun or a cutoff wheel in your hand, so the arm configuration matters as much as the capacity rating. On a symmetric column layout, the pads sit at the same distance front and back, which is what you want when the vehicle spends time up in the air with body panels off and welders running underneath.
We also look at what is above and behind the bay. A restoration shop in southern Minnesota we quoted last year had a 14-foot ceiling on paper but only 11 feet 6 inches of usable height once a mezzanine and a run of shop lighting were accounted for. That drove the decision to a baseplate configuration – the columns are tied together at the floor instead of at the top, so nothing overhead limits vehicle height when you raise a body-off chassis. Getting the lift-bay layout right on paper before the lift ships is far cheaper than discovering the truck arms cannot clear the door when a car is on the pads. The 2 post car lift itself: capacity, configuration, and price tier
For a restoration bay in a heavy-duty truck shop, we almost always spec a 10,000 or 12,000 lb two-post. That sounds like overkill for a Camaro, but the extra capacity buys headroom for the odd three-quarter-ton pickup, a lifted Bronco with a steel bumper, or a body-on-frame project sitting on a jig. Under 10,000 lb, the arms get skinnier and the pins wear faster; over 12,000, you’re paying for capacity you will not reach and giving up a little rise time along the way.
Configurations sort out along a few lines. Symmetric arms center the vehicle between the posts and are easier to load; asymmetric rotates the vehicle back so the driver can open a door – useful in tight bays. Clearfloor tucks the hydraulic lines and equalizer cables in an overhead crossbeam; floorplate ties them along the base. Restoration shops usually prefer clearfloor for the clean floor below the car. Price tiers land in three bands: an entry-tier import 2 post car lift with basic arms lands in the low three-thousand-dollar range delivered; a mid-tier Atlas or BendPak sits four to five thousand; a Rotary or Challenger commercial, which is the tier we recommend for a shop that runs a lift daily, is five to seven depending on features.
Freight, delivery, and getting the lift off the truck
The lift itself is usually the first line on the cost breakdown, but freight is the sneaky second line. A 2 post car lift ships as two column crates and one accessory crate, roughly 1,600 to 2,100 pounds total. That is a common-carrier LTL shipment with liftgate optional but rarely useful – the columns are too long and too heavy for most residential-style liftgates. Every shop we deliver to gets asked one question: do you have a forklift or a way to skid these off the truck?
For a heavy-duty truck shop, that is usually a yes. Your forks handle a nine-hundred-pound column crate without thinking. But even in a well-equipped shop, we still confirm – a customer near Owatonna last winter had every truck lift he needed but no way to get the crates the last hundred feet across icy gravel, so we coordinated a driver who could shuttle the pallets directly into the bay. Freight into southern Minnesota from our Iowa yard runs in the low-to-mid hundreds for most zip codes; freight from a coastal warehouse to Minnesota tends to double that. That is part of why we recommend buying from a Midwest distributor – not out of self-interest but because a shorter LTL lane means fewer damage claims and a lift on the ground faster.
Concrete, anchoring, and site prep
Every install starts with a concrete evaluation. The manufacturer spec is usually four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift, and four to six inches for the 12,000 lb versions – depending on how the reinforcement is laid and how the slab was poured. Most modern commercial slabs meet this. Older shop slabs, especially those poured over a mix of gravel and dirt in the 1970s, sometimes do not.
We drill a small test core when there is any doubt. If the slab passes, anchor cost is small – wedge anchors from the manufacturer’s kit and a rotary hammer, usually a modest line item on our install invoice. If the slab is thin or cracked, options are honest and short: pour a new pad in that bay, roughly eight to twelve dollars per square foot for a four-foot square around each column, or spec a lift with a wider base pad. A restoration shop we work with in southeast Minnesota went the new-pad route last spring after the core showed two and a half inches of ancient concrete under a truck bay. That slab-repair line saved them from an anchor pullout later. Site prep is the line shops most often skip in their initial budget, and the one that most often bites.
Installation labor: what we charge and what to expect
Our install crew shows up with the anchors, a rotary hammer, a plumb setup, and a laser level. A standard install runs one full day for our two-person crew – about eight hours on site. Total install labor from Auto Lift Services runs one to sixteen hundred dollars depending on drive distance from Ames and whether the lift is a clearfloor or baseplate model. Baseplate installs run slightly longer because the crossover tube has to lay flat under the vehicle.
What that gets you: laid-out chalk lines, drilled anchors, columns plumbed and torqued, hydraulics filled and bled, safety locks tested through a full up-and-down cycle with a test vehicle, and a walkthrough with your technicians on daily and weekly maintenance. We do not use the leave-the-box-in-the-corner approach. Every 2 post car lift we sell to a shop is one we have either installed ourselves or coached the shop’s own crew through. Adding it all up, a Midwest heavy-duty truck shop buying a two-post for a restoration bay usually lands in one of two brackets. A mid-tier setup – Atlas or BendPak 10,000 lb clearfloor, freight to southern Minnesota, decent slab, our install – runs mid five to low seven thousand all-in. A commercial-tier setup – Rotary or Challenger 12,000 lb, same freight and install – lands high seven to low ten thousand. The higher-tier lift is not a status buy. It is the one whose cables, cylinders, and arm restraints we stock in Ames year-round, so a five-year-out repair is a phone call and a parts shipment rather than a hunt.
The places restoration shops most often overpay: buying a 15,000 or 18,000 lb 2 post car lift when a 12,000 would do (extra capacity, no extra utility, more expensive cylinders); paying for coastal freight to save a few hundred on the lift and then losing it to damage claims and slow warranty response; skipping the slab test.
