Why an independent pro shop should care about cylinder rebuildability
The economics of an independent shop are different from a chain. You are the owner, you are the tech, and you cannot write off equipment downtime the way a corporate service center can. If your 2 post car lift goes down for two weeks waiting on a seal kit, that is fourteen days of lost revenue you never recover. The Ames shop owner had lived through exactly that scenario with a previous lift. His last cylinder started weeping in year eight, he called the seller — who was a marketplace reseller with no parts operation — and the answer was that the manufacturer had discontinued the seal profile. On paper, they are close cousins — same capacity, same general geometry, same certification. The differences are in the cylinder design, the arm restraint mechanism, and the parts stocking history. Rotary has been building the SPO family for decades with an unbroken parts trail; Challenger has been building the CL family with the same commitment. Both are rebuildable. Neither will go orphan.
The SPO10 uses a 2.75-inch bore cylinder with a stacked-seal design that we stock kits for in three variants. The CL10 uses a 3-inch bore cylinder with a single-piece seal cartridge that we also stock. Neither seller in the marketplace is going to tell you the cylinder tag number matters. We do, because when your 2 post car lift needs service a decade from now, that tag number is the difference between a $180 kit shipped Tuesday and a $6,000 replacement lift. Ask any distributor to prove they can source your cylinder kit before you buy.
Arm restraints: two different mechanisms, same safety outcome
The Rotary SPO10 uses a gear-tooth arm restraint at the swing pin that clicks positively as the arm rotates under load. The Challenger CL10 uses a spring-loaded pin restraint that engages the pin bore. Both are ALI-validated designs and both keep the arm from swinging out from under a vehicle. In daily use, the gear-tooth style is slightly more forgiving of dirt in the mechanism — a real consideration on a shop that does dusty wheel bearing work. The spring-pin style resets cleanly every time and is a hair faster to swing without load.
The independent shop guy asked which one would fail first in his environment. The honest answer is neither one, if the arm restraint is cleaned and inspected on schedule. If your arm restraint ticks up and clicks down like a ratchet, it is working. If it does not, the mechanism has debris, a broken tooth, or a compromised spring, and the arm restraint kit needs to go on. We stock the kits for both lifts in the comparison. On a well-maintained 2 post car lift, arm restraint hardware lasts a decade or more without service.
Wheel bearing work: what the shop actually does under the lift
Wheel bearing service means the wheels come off, the hub gets pulled, and the shop press comes into play at the bench. Under the lift itself, the tech is working at pad height with the vehicle up on safeties. Both units give him the mid-height stop he needs for that. Where the geometry starts to matter is the drive-through clearance under the swung arms, because he rolls a press cart in and out of the bay repeatedly during a bearing job. The SPO10 gives about 96 inches of drive-through; the CL10 gives about 100 inches. That extra 4 inches will let his press cart in without a duck-and-shove.
Small differences like that add up on the shop floor. On the SPO10, he would learn to angle the press cart in a certain way; on the CL10 he would roll it straight in. Both work. Neither is wrong. But when you own the shop, ergonomic time is money, and the CL10’s slight clearance advantage was one of the reasons he leaned toward the Challenger. We told him it was a marginal difference and he should not overweight it. The 2 post car lift decision at his volume comes down more to parts trail and dealer support than to four inches under the arm.
Hydraulic fluid, seal life, and the rebuild-kit conversation
Both lifts run standard AW32 or AW46 anti-wear hydraulic fluid, roughly a five-gallon reservoir depending on the plumbing. Fluid life is 24 months in normal use, sooner if the reservoir breather is compromised and the fluid picks up moisture. Bad fluid is the number one accelerator of cylinder seal wear on a 2 post car lift. Owners who keep the fluid clean get 12 to 15 years out of the original seals. Owners who neglect it start seeing weeps in year six or seven.
When the seals do finally go, the rebuild is straightforward — pull the cylinder, disassemble on the bench, replace the seal kit, reinstall, bleed. A capable independent shop tech can do it in a Saturday. The kits for both the SPO10 and CL10 are on our shelf in Ames. What you cannot do — and what will trap an owner who bought a low-cost import — is fabricate a seal kit if the manufacturer has discontinued the profile. Ceiling fit and the Ames shop bay reality
His bay is 13 feet 8 inches to the truss, with a rolling door that eats 4 inches when open. That is enough clearance for either the SPO10 or the CL10 in the standard 12-foot column configuration. He would not have room for a taller 14-foot column, and he did not need one — his heaviest customer vehicle is around 7,500 pounds and he does not intend to service anything bigger than a three-quarter-ton. The right 2 post car lift for his shop was clearly in the standard 10K range, not oversized for a fleet operation he does not run.
Concrete on his bay is solid — poured in 2003 with visible rebar and no cracking around where the columns would land. We tested with a rebar scanner during our on-site visit and confirmed five inches of good pour. No need for a saw-cut or repour. The install was one of the cleanest we have done in Ames this year, and he was doing wheel bearing work under the new lift the following Monday. When the concrete, ceiling, and vehicle mix all match the equipment, install is fast and the lift starts paying back immediately.

He bought the Rotary SPO10. The Challenger was a close second, and honestly either one would have served his shop for 15 years.
