A 2 post car lift changes what an off-road and overlanding builder can actually do in his own shop, and we saw that first-hand this spring on an install in Urbandale for a customer running a lifted Tacoma, an FJ80, and a fourth-gen 4Runner all on the same weekend rotation. The build called for a transmission drop and a full hydraulic cylinder seal rebuild on the aging entry-level lift he had bought a decade earlier. Instead of throwing more money at parts for the old columns, he pulled the trigger on a new professional 12K two-post from us. This is the case study — what he chose, what we found in the old cylinders, and what changed when the new lift came online in his Urbandale shop.

The builder, the trucks, and the transmission service problem
Our customer runs a small four-bay shop out of Urbandale where the west metro touches farmland, and half his revenue comes from other off-roaders in the Des Moines area who trust him with lifted trucks and long-travel builds. His original 2 post car lift was a decade-old 9,000 lb entry-level unit that had done fine on stock vehicles but was groaning on 6,500 lb built rigs with rock rails, front bumpers, and roof-top tents. Transmission service was the trigger. He had three Toyota transmission jobs stacked on the calendar and the old lift could not reliably hold the front-heavy 4Runner past the eight-foot mark.
The transmission service use case is where a two-post shines — you need clean access to the pan, the crossmember, the shift linkage, and the flex plate all at the same time, and you need the vehicle held rock-solid because a 200 lb transmission on a jack is moving unpredictably at chest height. On the old lift, the cylinder seals were bypassing under load and the vehicle was creeping down about a half inch per hour. That is not a working service platform. That is a liability. So he brought us in to look at whether we could rebuild it or if he was better off replacing the whole 2 post car lift outright.
What we found in the old hydraulic cylinder seals
We pulled both cylinders off his old lift and sent them to the bench. What we found is what we usually find on a nine-to-twelve-year-old unit that has never been rebuilt: the primary U-cup seals had cold-flowed and lost their sharp lip, the rod wipers were cracked, and the piston bearing bands were chewed. In one cylinder we also found a light scratch running down the rod itself from a piece of grit that had bypassed the wiper. That scratch is game-over. You can rebuild seals all day, but a scratched rod will re-tear a new seal within weeks. The cylinder needed a new rod or a full replacement.
We priced out a full seal kit and rod replacement for both cylinders, added labor and travel to Urbandale, and compared it to a new BendPak XPR-12CL 12,000 lb 2 post car lift with modern hydraulics, ALI Gold certification, and telescoping drop-end arms that would actually reach the tow points on a lifted Tacoma. The rebuild came in at roughly a quarter the price of the new lift, but with two constraints — the old columns still had wear on the cable pulleys and the safety locks had been serviced twice already. He decided the rebuild was throwing good money at an old chassis. We ordered the new lift.
Sizing the new 2 post car lift for lifted trucks
Overlanding builds are where capacity ratings get tricky. A stock 4Runner is 4,800 lb. Add a two-inch lift, front and rear steel bumpers, a winch, a roof-top tent, 35-inch tires, sliders, and a dual-battery build in the back and you are north of 6,200 lb. A well-built Tacoma pushes toward 6,000 lb. An FJ80 with the same treatment is knocking on 7,500 lb. He wanted the lift to handle any of them without ever running past 60 percent of rated capacity, which is the sweet spot for cylinder seal life and cable life. That math points to a 12,000 lb 2 post car lift.
We spec’d the 12K BendPak XPR-12CL with the extended-reach arms because the tow-point pads on a lifted truck sit further out from centerline than stock. We also spec’d taller adapters — six-inch stackable — because a lifted truck’s factory pinch weld sits three or four inches higher than a stock one, and the standard four-inch stack leaves the arm resting on the rocker slider rather than the pinch. Details like that separate a lift that works well from a lift that works. Ordering a 12K without spec’ing the tall pad stack would have meant a frustrated builder on day one.
Installation notes for an Urbandale garage bay
His bay was fourteen feet wide, twenty-four feet deep, with twelve feet of ceiling and a five-inch slab from 2004. That is a workable footprint for a professional-grade 2 post car lift. We measured concrete thickness at four corners with a coring bit before we scheduled the install — the front two corners came in at just over five inches, the rear two at 4.75. Both cleared the manufacturer minimum. The slab had a good broom finish and no visible cracking along the anchor lines. We were comfortable proceeding.
The install itself took a day. We removed the old lift in the morning, patched the old anchor holes with epoxy grout, laid out the new column locations ten feet eight inches on center, drilled with a rotary hammer and a three-quarter-inch wet bit, set the wedge anchors to spec torque, and shimmed the columns plumb within a thirty-second of an inch. The hydraulic power unit was wired to a new 30A 208V single-phase circuit his electrician had installed the previous week. We ran the break-in cycle, checked cable tension, and left him with a lift he could put a 7,000 lb truck on without a second thought.
Why hydraulic cylinder rebuild kits matter long-term
Here is the honest truth about a 2 post car lift no salesperson likes to volunteer: the cylinders are the highest-wear hydraulic component on the machine, and they will need seal service at some point in your ownership. On a professional lift running six to ten cycles a day, that point is usually year eight to ten. On a hobbyist lift running twice a week, the cylinders might go twenty years before they need it, but they might also fail earlier if the fluid is not changed or if grit gets past the wiper.
The cylinder seal kits and rebuild parts we stock are model-specific — a BendPak U-cup is not a Rotary U-cup — so the shop that inventories the correct kit for their model saves themselves a week of downtime when the day comes. On the new install in Urbandale we sold the customer a rebuild kit at the time of purchase and told him to put it on the shelf. He will not need it for a decade, but when he does, the parts will be waiting. That is how you build a shop that stays running through a transmission service backlog instead of one that goes dark for a week.
Comparing the old lift to the new one under load
Two weeks after install we came back and watched him run a transmission job on the FJ80 — full front-heavy vehicle, tow points on extended arms, transmission jack under the crossmember. The new 2 post car lift held zero creep across an eight-hour job. On the old lift, the same job would have dropped a half inch by lunch and been down another quarter inch by three. That drop makes a transmission alignment against the bell housing a game of chase, and it makes cross-member bolt torque unreliable.
The bigger difference was arm reach. The old lift’s short-reach arms could not hit the factory tow points on a lifted truck without sliding pad adapters way out and creating a tipping moment. The new extended-reach arms cradled the tow points cleanly and left plenty of length in the pad stack for future adjustment. His transmission service throughput doubled inside a month, not because he was faster, but because he stopped fighting the platform. That is what you buy when you buy a properly sized lift instead of trying to squeeze one more year out of a tired one.
What we would tell the next Urbandale builder
If you are an off-road builder shopping for a 2 post car lift in Urbandale or anywhere else in the Des Moines metro, do these five things before you buy. First, weigh a couple of your builds on a certified scale so you know the real number, not the door sticker. Second, measure your ceiling clearance to the truss, not to the drywall. Third, core your slab or at least get a corner sample so you know what you are anchoring into. Fourth, factor in extended-reach arms and taller pad stacks — every lifted truck needs them. Fifth, buy a hydraulic cylinder seal kit at the time of purchase and put it on the shelf.
