Oil pan gasket work is one of the least glamorous jobs in a fleet bay and one of the most dangerous when a lift is misused. Why an oil pan job is a high-risk two-post scenario
An oil pan gasket replacement puts the vehicle in the air for hours. The crossmember has to come down, the pan has to be lowered, the mating surfaces have to be cleaned and scraped, the new gasket seated, the pan reinstalled, and the fluid replaced. On some trucks the engine has to be lifted slightly to clear the pan on removal, which shifts weight around while the vehicle is up in the air. That is exactly the wrong condition for a lift that is not properly rated, not properly locked, or not properly loaded on the arms. Every fleet operator running oil pan work on a 2 post car lift needs to build the safety habits before the truck goes up.
The Sioux City fleet manager’s close call happened when a tech was working under a truck that was resting on the arms without the safety cams engaged. The truck shifted when the pan came down, one arm rotated slightly toward the center, and the tech felt the swing. Nobody was hurt, but the incident report went to city risk management and it triggered his call to us. We came out the same week, trained his crew, and inspected every arm restraint and safety cam on the shop’s five two-posts. A 2 post car lift can be operated safely every day for decades — but only with discipline.
Arm restraint verification before every raise
The arm restraint is the mechanism that keeps the swing arm from rotating out from under the vehicle when it is loaded. On a Rotary or Challenger commercial two-post, that mechanism is a gear-tooth or spring-pin lockout that engages the swing pin when the arm is loaded. The tech’s job is to verify engagement every single raise, not just the first raise of the day. The visual and audible cue is a positive click as the arm loads, and a ratchet sound if you try to swing it under load. No click, no lift. That is the rule.
We taught the Sioux City crew to do a formal tick-check on every arm before every raise. Grab the arm, try to rotate it, listen for the ratchet, confirm the tooth engagement. It adds 30 seconds to the workflow and it is the single most important safety habit on a 2 post car lift. In the year since we ran the training, they have not had another arm-shift incident. Safety-cam engagement before anyone crawls under
The safety cams are the mechanical positive-locks that catch every few inches as the lift rises. They exist for exactly the oil pan scenario: hours of overhead work with the tech’s body under the truck. The operator raises the lift to working height, lowers onto the safety cams so the cams take the load off the hydraulic cylinders, and then and only then does anyone crawl under. If the hydraulic system ever fails while the cams are engaged, the truck stays where it is. If the cams are not engaged, hydraulic failure means the truck comes down.

The Sioux City incident happened because the tech had raised the lift and gone straight to the pan without lowering onto the cams — the truck was resting on the hydraulic pressure alone. That is the failure mode we train against. Every time. Cams engaged before you go under, always. If the cams do not click audibly on the way up, the mechanism needs service and the lift is not safe until it is fixed.
Pad placement on the frame lift zone
An oil pan job puts the technician under the engine, which means the vehicle’s weight distribution matters. On a two-post, the pads should sit on the manufacturer-specified frame lift points, not on random crossmembers or floor pan sections. Getting the pad placement right ensures the vehicle sits stable through the whole job, even when the engine is being jacked slightly to clear the pan. Wrong pad placement is a recipe for a shift under load, and a shift under load is exactly what caused the near-miss in Sioux City.
We taught the crew to consult the manufacturer’s service manual for each vehicle’s lift points before the first raise, and to use the adapter pads that came with the lift for any pickup that needs the extra height. On many oil pan gasket jobs, the engine needs to lift slightly on its mounts to clear the pan for removal. That means an engine support tool — a bar across the strut towers or a chain hoist from an overhead beam — has to hold the engine while the pan comes off. The support has to be independent of the lift itself, because the lift is already carrying the vehicle. Never use the lift to hold the engine directly; that mixes two separate load paths and creates unpredictable behavior if either one shifts.
For the Sioux City crew, we spec’d a proper engine support bar and made sure every truck they service has documented lift points and support-bar geometry. This is not glamorous work, but it is the operational discipline that keeps a fleet bay incident-free. On a 2 post car lift, the vehicle is the load; the engine, once supported for pan removal, is a separate load; and both need independent, properly-rated support during the job. Mixing the two is where things go wrong.
Cable and cylinder inspection on a high-cycle bay
The Sioux City fleet runs seven days a week, three shifts, and their two-posts see 20 to 30 lift cycles a day. That is a high-cycle bay, which means the equalizer cables and hydraulic cylinders wear faster than in a light-duty shop. We put them on a 30-day inspection schedule for cables (looking for broken strand, corrosion, kinks) and a 90-day inspection for cylinder fluid and seal condition. That is more frequent than the manufacturer’s minimum, and it is appropriate for their duty cycle.
