Some myths get baked in during that confusion. The shop wanted a lift they would use maybe once a week for oil changes and light fluid service on customer EVs, and they did not want to overbuy or underbuy. This is what we told them.

What the model number is actually telling you
Almost every 2 post car lift model number encodes four things: capacity, arm geometry, overhead or floorplate style, and options. Take a common example, the BendPak XPR-10S. The 10 means 10,000 pounds. The S means symmetric arms. XPR is the product family. What the model number does not encode is column height, and that is the number that catches people off guard on install day. You have to read the spec sheet, not the model, to know whether the lift will fit under your ceiling.
The other place the model number lies to you is capacity. A 10,000 pound 2 post car lift is not built to lift a 10,000 pound truck. It is built for a passenger vehicle up to 10,000 pounds gross. Balance matters. A dually with a heavy front end will overload the arms even if total weight is under the rating. For an Ankeny oil-service shop working exclusively on cars and light EVs, 10,000 pounds is more than enough headroom.
Myth — bigger capacity is always better
It is not. Jumping from a 10,000 pound 2 post car lift to a 12,000 or 14,000 pound unit gets you bigger columns, taller minimum ceiling requirements, higher price, and no real benefit for oil changes on cars. It also usually means bigger arms with heavier drop-end pads, which can be harder to swing under a low sports EV without hitting the rocker panel plastic.
For light service work, right-size the capacity to the vehicles you actually work on and give your budget back to build quality. A well-built 10,000 pound 2 post car lift with a good bearing package will outlast an overbuilt 14,000 pound unit with bargain components. Symmetric vs asymmetric — the second letter that matters
An S in the model means symmetric. An A means asymmetric. Symmetric arms are equal length front and rear and load the vehicle centered between the columns. Asymmetric arms are shorter in front, longer in rear, and rotate the columns 30 degrees so the driver door opens without hitting the column. Asymmetric is nicer to work with for daily oil service because the tech does not squeeze past the column every time.
Some models are versymmetric, which is a marketing word for a lift that can do either. Those cost more and rarely deliver on the promise for a single-user shop. If your bay is oil service only and you know which door you want to open on which side, pick asymmetric and stop paying extra for versatility you will not use. If you truly switch between long trucks and short cars, versymmetric earns its keep.
Overhead vs floorplate — the third decision
Overhead 2 post car lift models have a top beam that carries the hydraulic hose and equalization cables over the top of the vehicle. Floorplate models run those lines under a plate on the floor. Overhead needs about twelve feet of ceiling minimum. Floorplate can work under an eleven foot ceiling but leaves an obstacle to trip over. For an Ankeny shop with modern eleven-to-twelve-foot ceilings, we default to overhead every time.
One myth we hear is that overhead lifts are more likely to leak hydraulic fluid onto vehicles. In fact, overhead beams route hoses through steel channels and modern fittings do not leak in normal service. The floorplate style was designed for shops with garage-door limitations, not because it is inherently better. Choose based on your building.
Comparing across brands without getting lost
