Branch 1: How Much Are You Actually Comfortable Spending

Budget is the first branch because it eliminates half the catalog. A restoration shop 2 post car lift falls into three practical tiers. Tier one is the value tier — Atlas and BendPak XPR-10 models — landing in the low four figures with basic overhead and standard arm restraints. Tier two is the professional tier — Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10 — landing in the mid to upper four figures with gear-driven restraints, drop-end arms, and ALI Gold certification standard. Tier three is the specialty tier for shops that also pull heavy engines and transmissions on trucks, running 12,000 to 15,000 pound capacities in the upper four to low five figures.

For a restoration bay pulling transmissions two or three times a week, we almost always steer people to tier two. The certification, the arm design, and the safety features all pay for themselves the first time you have to catch a 300-pound bellhousing on a jack transmission adapter. Tier one works if you truly are hobbyist-frequency (one job a quarter). Tier three is overkill for cars — save it for heavy chassis work. Nail down your tier before you look at any specific model, or you will spend a week comparing lifts you were never going to buy anyway.

Branch 2: What Is Your Ceiling Height

Ceiling height is the second branch, and it splits into three answers: under 11 feet, 11 to 13 feet, or over 13 feet. Under 11 feet forces you into a low-ceiling variant or a baseplate 2 post car lift, both of which are available at tier two. Eleven to 13 feet is the sweet spot where standard overhead models work but you still need to double-check the safety-bar clearance against the tallest vehicle you will lift. Over 13 feet means you have all the options and can pick strictly on other criteria.

Transmission service specifically adds another ceiling consideration: how tall is the vehicle when the transmission is being lowered out? A 4L80E on a trans jack adds roughly 20 inches of height below the frame, so a full-size Chevrolet pickup at 78 inches of chassis height plus 20 inches of jack plus another few inches for the pad stack easily eats 130 inches of ceiling. If you are working on lifted trucks with transmissions, plan for at least 13 feet — a standard shop with 12-foot ceilings will start to feel very tight the first time you drop a big automatic.

Branch 3: Do You Need ALI Gold Certification

ALI Gold certification is issued by the Automotive Lift Institute and is the North American third-party safety standard for automotive lifts. If you do outside work for the public, if you carry commercial insurance that references OSHA-recognized equipment, or if you plan to sell the shop someday, buy an ALI Gold-certified 2 post car lift. All Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10 lifts we sell are ALI Gold from the factory. Some tier-one lifts are not, and the certification cannot be added later — it is either built into the design and tested by the factory or it is not.

For a pure hobbyist restoration bay in a private outbuilding, ALI Gold is a strong preference but not a hard requirement. The certification adds cost because it forces engineering margins the value tier does not include. It also gives you a paper trail for insurance and for the eventual buyer of your shop. We have never once had a customer regret specifying ALI Gold, and we have had several call back years later frustrated that the value lift they bought does not have the certification an insurance underwriter now demands. Branch 4: Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Versymmetric Arms

Once you have the tier and the ceiling settled, arm geometry is the next branch. Symmetric arms are equal length front and rear and are best for evenly weighted vehicles — muscle cars, trucks, and long-wheelbase restorations. Asymmetric arms rotate the columns and shift the vehicle rearward, which is better for late-model cars where door-clearance matters. Versymmetric arms swing both ways and let you switch on the fly.

For a restoration bay that alternates between a 1969 Camaro (long, symmetric weight) and a customer’s 2019 Charger drop-off (needs asymmetric door clearance), versymmetric is worth the modest premium. The Rotary SPOA10 and the Challenger CL10 both offer versymmetric arm designs as an option. If your bay is dedicated to only pre-1975 iron, plain symmetric is fine and slightly less expensive. If it is dedicated to modern daily-driver rebuilds, asymmetric fits better. Restoration shops that take in a mix — which is most of the northern Missouri shops we work with — end up on versymmetric more often than not.

Branch 5: Concrete and Anchoring for a Restoration Bay

Every 2 post car lift we sell requires a minimum four-inch reinforced concrete slab at 3,000 psi minimum. That is the manufacturer spec on all major brands. A lot of northern Missouri restoration shops are in older barns and outbuildings with three-inch slabs that were poured for tractor storage decades ago. A three-inch slab will not hold anchors under load, and we have seen columns pull up and out under a full-weight vehicle. That is not a hypothetical — we get the parts calls afterward.

The fix is either a saw-cut and re-pour of a 4×4-foot pad under each column (eight inches thick, tied to the surrounding slab with rebar dowels) or a full slab replacement. The pad-replacement route runs about $600 to $1,200 per column depending on local concrete pricing. If the whole slab is questionable, replacing the section under the entire lift footprint is often cheaper long-term. We have a separate concrete slab article that walks the numbers. Do not skip this branch — it is where restoration bays fail the most often.

Branch 6: Transmission-Specific Accessories

A transmission-service bay needs three accessories that we do not always ship standard: a transmission jack rated to 1,000 pounds or more, pad stack adapters for lifted or low vehicles, and a wheel spotter dish for the occasional torque-converter work. Budget another $700 to $1,500 for the accessory kit on top of the lift itself. The transmission jack is by far the most important — a hydraulic trans jack with a saddle that adjusts for angle will save your back and your driveshaft, and it turns a two-person lift into a one-person job.

We also recommend a pair of gear-driven arm restraint retrofit kits if the lift you order does not include them by default. Any 2 post car lift that will do transmission work should have gear-driven restraints because pin-style restraints can loosen under vibration and let the arm move mid-job. That is the exact failure mode we do not want a technician standing under. Order the accessories with the lift so the freight is combined; it is meaningfully cheaper than ordering later.

Branch 7: Delivery Timeline and Installation

The last branch is timeline. If you need the bay operational for a specific project, plan backward from that date. A tier-two Rotary or Challenger 2 post car lift ships in three to ten business days, freight to northern Missouri runs another two to four days, and install takes one day with a two-person crew on prepared concrete. Add another week for accessory delivery if you order the trans jack and adapters separately. Total wall-clock from PO to first lift is typically two to three weeks.

If your slab work is not done yet, add the concrete cure time — 28 days for a full re-pour, seven days minimum before anchoring. That is the branch that sinks the most timelines.
