How cables actually fail on a 2 post car lift
Lifting cables on a 2 post car lift do not fail from one big overload. They fail from thousands of small cycle stresses accumulating over years. Every up-cycle stretches the cable strands microscopically. Every down-cycle relaxes them. That strand-level flex, repeated eight to twelve times a day for eight years, work-hardens the wire until individual strands start to snap. The failure point almost always starts at a sheave — the pulley the cable rides over — where the cable bends tightest and rubs the sheave lip.
A tire-and-alignment shop along the Iowa-Nebraska border might cycle its two-post six to ten times a day between alignment racks and tie-rod work, and once again five to eight times when a transmission service rolls through. That is 2,500 to 5,000 cycles per year. At year seven or eight the cables have seen 20,000 to 40,000 cycles, and that is the window where you start seeing broken strands at the sheave. The good news: cable failure is progressive, not sudden, if you inspect for it. The bad news: nobody inspects until the day a strand catches their fingernail and they realize the whole cable is compromised.
The three cable inspection checkpoints
Every 2 post car lift cable inspection has three checkpoints, and every shop owner should be able to walk them in ten minutes. Checkpoint one: end fittings. Look at both cable terminations — the swaged fitting at the equalizer sheave and the anchor at the carriage. Look for corrosion at the fitting, deformation of the swage collar, and cracked paint that signals the fitting has flexed. Any deformation means retirement of the cable, not just an inspection note.
Checkpoint two: the sheave lands. With the lift lowered, run a rag along each cable at every point where the cable rides a sheave. If the rag snags on a broken strand, the cable is done. Checkpoint three: overall diameter. Modern cables are typically three-eighths inch or seven-sixteenths inch. A caliper reading of more than six percent below nominal — for example, a nominally three-eighths inch cable measuring under 0.352 inch — indicates internal wear or strand loss. Retire the cable. The ANSI/ALI ALOIM standard governs these checkpoints, and any shop owner can print the checklist for free from the ALI website. Do it monthly. Sign the checklist. Keep it in a binder next to the lift.
Replacement intervals we see in the field
The manufacturer’s replacement interval on most 2 post car lift cables is either time-based or cycle-based, whichever comes first. Time-based is usually five to ten years depending on brand. Cycle-based numbers range from 30,000 up to 50,000 cycles. In a tire-and-alignment shop along the Iowa-Nebraska border cycling 2,500 to 5,000 times per year, cycle count catches you before time does. The shops we service typically hit their first replacement around year seven or eight, sometimes as early as year five if the shop stays busy year-round.

Why transmission service is hard on cables
Transmission service specifically is hard on a 2 post car lift because a transmission drop is a long dwell time under partial load. When the transmission comes out, the vehicle is unloaded on the rear by 150 to 300 lb depending on the assembly. That asymmetric unloading transfers to the front cables, which are already running the heavier side of the vehicle. Over a full transmission job, the front cables might see eight to twelve up-down repositions with unbalanced weight each time.
The workaround is simple, but shops skip it. Every time you take significant weight off the vehicle mid-lift — pulling the transmission, pulling an engine cradle, dropping a subframe — you should re-check ride height and tension before you continue. If one carriage has crept up or down relative to the other, the cables are out of equalization and you will wear them fast. Reset by fully lowering, letting the safety locks re-engage, and lifting again to a fresh height. That thirty-second reset extends cable life by years. Tire-alignment shops that also do transmission service should train every tech to do it.
Safety locks — the last line of defense
Safety locks are the ultimate backup on a 2 post car lift. If the hydraulic cylinder fails or a cable parts, the mechanical locks catch the carriage at the nearest tooth and hold the vehicle. Every professional lift has them. Their function relies on a spring-loaded pawl that engages a toothed rack inside the column. Over time the pawl spring weakens, or the latch cartridge fouls with grease and grit, and the pawl can fail to engage. That is silent until the moment you need it.
Test the locks every month. Raise the lift to about eight feet, listen for the tooth-by-tooth clicking as the pawl passes each notch. Any missed clicks means the pawl is not engaging cleanly. Lower onto the locks, kill the hydraulics, and confirm the vehicle sits solid without cylinder pressure. If the vehicle drops at all, the locks are not holding. Ignoring a bad lock is how a dropped-vehicle incident becomes an OSHA record.
Concrete anchors and column plumb
A 2 post car lift is only as safe as the concrete under it and the anchors that hold the columns down. Every professional-grade lift ships with three-quarter-inch wedge-anchor bolts torqued to somewhere between 110 and 150 foot-pounds depending on manufacturer. Those anchor bolts hold the column against the moment force of a vehicle raised eight feet in the air, and that moment force can be north of 20,000 foot-pounds during an off-center loading. If any anchor is loose, one column will tip a fraction of a degree, and that fraction throws the load balance off.
Check anchor torque annually. Buy a torque wrench that reads into the range your bolts need, or ask us to check it on the annual ALI inspection visit. At the same time, check column plumb with a four-foot level in both directions. Any deviation from vertical over four feet means the shims under the base plate have shifted or the concrete has settled. Both are fixable, but they need to be caught and corrected before they compound. In a border-region tire-alignment shop where the two-post might be handling everything from a Camry alignment to an F-250 transmission drop, plumb and anchor torque are non-negotiable safety items.
Building an inspection routine that sticks
The single best safety improvement any tire-alignment shop can make to its 2 post car lift program is a written inspection routine that gets signed and filed. Daily: safety-lock function test before the first vehicle goes up. Monthly: cable visual inspection with a rag, sheave check, lock click count, hydraulic hose scan for weep. Annually: full ALI ALOIM inspection by a certified inspector, including cable diameter measurement, anchor torque, column plumb, and cylinder cycle test.
