A Quad Cities collector called us about a 2 post car lift for his Davenport garage last spring — six vehicles across three brands, a couple worth six figures, a pole barn with a fresh pour, and a specific concern about how his 1967 muscle car would sit on the arms compared to a modern crossover. This is the first-year story of that install, the symmetric-versus-asymmetric decision we walked him through, and the lessons from twelve months of tire rotations, brake jobs, and one unexpected engine drop. The collector’s actual concern: arm geometry across eras

A modern vehicle sits low, wide, and evenly weighted. A 1967 muscle car sits high, narrow, and forward-biased. When our Davenport collector sketched out his six-car stable, we mapped every vehicle by wheelbase, curb weight, and center-of-gravity. The muscle car was 55/45 front-biased with a short 108-inch wheelbase. The 2024 crossover sitting next to it was almost dead-even with a 111-inch wheelbase. Same lift, radically different pickup-point geometry.

That’s the collector’s dilemma. A pure symmetric 2 post car lift centers vehicles between columns, with all four arms equal length. That’s optimal for the modern crossover — even weight, even arm length, walk-around clearance both sides. An asymmetric lift rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and uses shorter front arms and longer rears, positioning the vehicle so the door swings clear of the column when opened. That’s the geometry the muscle car actually needs because you’re getting in and out of it while it’s on the arms far more than the daily driver.

Why we recommended asymmetric for this collection

For the mixed collection, we recommended an asymmetric 2 post car lift — specifically a Rotary SPOA10 in the 10,000-lb class. Reasoning: the modern crossovers sit fine on asymmetric because the arm geometry still handles them; the muscle car and the vintage sports car benefit from the door-swing clearance dramatically. Most 2-post asymmetric lifts today are actually versymmetric — meaning the arm design lets you center a vehicle or offset it based on what’s coming into the bay. That’s the flexibility a collector needs.

The trade-off: asymmetric arms are typically slightly shorter on the front, which means for very long vehicles (a full-size crew cab or a limousine), you may run out of front arm reach. Our Davenport collector doesn’t own anything with a wheelbase over 120 inches, so this was a non-issue. If your collection includes long trucks or motorhomes, a symmetric wide 2 post car lift or a 4-post is the better answer. We spent 45 minutes on the phone mapping his actual fleet before the recommendation went out.

Install day: what a fresh-pour pole barn made easy

The Davenport install was a joy because the collector had done the site prep right. Fresh 6-inch pour, 4,000 PSI concrete, dedicated 30-amp 208-230V single-phase circuit run to a subpanel already located near the lift footprint. Ceiling: 12 feet clear at the eaves, 14 at the peak. Column spacing: 14-foot wide bay, plenty of room. Anchor drill, plumb, hydraulic bleed, safety-lock cycle test — a day and a half start to finish. Our install crew was back on the road home to Ames by mid-afternoon on day two.

What made it easy in a way most residential installs aren’t: he’d asked us for the concrete spec sheet before the pour. If you’re a first-year 2 post car lift owner-to-be, this is the biggest single thing you can do — get the concrete right the first time. A fresh 6-inch pad with proper cure time gives you a lift that will outlast your ownership of the house. A retrofit onto marginal concrete is a compromise from day one, and it shows up as anchor movement, arm drift, or worse in year eight.

Month one to three: the tire rotation learning curve

Tire rotations on a 2 post car lift are simple in theory: pick the car up by frame or pinch weld, rotate the tires while wheels are hanging free, drop it. In practice, first-year owners burn a couple of shop rags getting the arm-pad placement right. Every vehicle has manufacturer-designated lift points — often marked with a triangular arrow on the pinch weld or documented in the owner’s manual. Miss those points and you crush a rocker, dent a sill, or worse crack a subframe mount.

The Davenport collector’s first month was a lot of arm-pad-placement practice with a flashlight and the manuals. Modern vehicles frequently want rubber block adapters over the pinch weld because the pad’s steel plate will crush the sheet metal otherwise. Vintage muscle cars usually take a frame pickup — bare steel to bare steel is fine on a solid boxed frame. By month three he’d built a laminated card for each vehicle in his collection showing exact pad positions. That’s the collector move; the shortcut isn’t worth the cost of a crushed rocker on anything you care about.

The unexpected engine drop

Six months into ownership, the collector called: the muscle car’s small-block had picked up a rear-main leak and he wanted to know whether his 2 post car lift could handle an engine pull. Answer: yes, with caveats. A 2-post is fine for dropping an engine as long as (1) you’ve got a proper leveler and hoist, (2) the vehicle sits secure on the arms with the front pads well-placed, (3) you leave the mechanical safety locks engaged the whole time, and (4) you don’t remove enough front-end weight to shift the balance dramatically rearward while the vehicle is still on the lift.

He pulled the engine, replaced the rear main, and reinstalled — three-day job in his own garage on his own schedule, something he’d previously been paying a shop three grand to do. That single job justified a meaningful chunk of the lift’s purchase price. And the muscle car came off the lift with the same paint it went on with. That’s what a properly installed 2 post car lift buys a collector: the ability to work on your own machines, on your own time, without a stranger’s hands on them.

Cable inspection: what a low-cycle collector needs to know

A quick-lube franchise cycles their 2 post car lift 25-plus times a day. A Davenport collector cycles his maybe twice a month. Different wear patterns entirely. For a low-cycle collector, cable and hydraulic wear is dominated by time and environmental factors, not use cycles. Humidity in a Quad Cities pole barn without climate control can rust cable strands even if they never see load. Hydraulic fluid degrades regardless of cycles.

Our maintenance recommendation for a collector-owned 2 post car lift: quarterly visual cable inspection, annual detailed inspection with a rag to catch broken wires per lay, hydraulic fluid change every three years or when it darkens, cable replacement at year seven regardless of visible wear (low-cycle cables can hold up longer than franchise cables, but time still wins). Total annual maintenance under a couple hundred dollars, mostly your own hour. That’s the ownership math a first-year collector should walk into.

What we’d change looking back at year one

Two things we’d tweak if we did the install over. First, we’d have specified the wider optional rubber adapter pad set from the start — the collector ended up buying it aftermarket at month four to protect the crossover’s plastic-covered pinch welds. Ship it with the lift, save the second order. Second, we’d have recommended a mounted LED work light on the beam earlier. He added one at month eight and immediately regretted not having it for the first eight months of muscle car time.

Otherwise, the install and the model choice have held up beautifully.
