A Dubuque collector’s build-out
Our customer bought a rural property and built a heated storage barn for his collection, with one bay designated as a working bay for maintenance he had been trusting to a specialty shop three hours away. The problem was that his sports coupe needed periodic wheel bearing service that the specialty shop charged premium rates for, and the drive there and back was a full weekend day round-trip. Doing that work himself in his own barn was the goal, and a 2 post car lift was the piece of equipment that made it possible without becoming a project of its own.
He came to us before the barn slab was poured, which turned out to matter enormously. We were able to spec the slab pour for future 2 post car lift install — proper thickness, proper cure time, embedded rebar in the right pattern, and the electrical conduit run to the correct spot in the working bay. Coming to us at that stage saved him thousands compared to retrofitting the same work into a finished slab a year later, and it saved several days of shop downtime that would otherwise be unavoidable.
Sequencing the garage build
The right sequence for a garage build that will house a 2 post car lift is: slab first, framing second, electrical and lighting third, lift install fourth, finishing work fifth. If any of those steps happen out of order, the following steps get more expensive. Our customer’s builder had originally planned to insulate and finish the working bay before the lift arrived, which would have meant tearing out finished walls to run additional electrical for the power unit and any auxiliary lighting we added around the columns during install.
We got involved at the slab stage and worked with the builder to sequence lift install between framing and interior finish. The lift went in on bare concrete with rough framing overhead and no interior walls yet, meaning columns went to true plumb without fighting drywall, cables ran cleanly overhead through open joists, and the electrician wired the power unit to a dedicated circuit without opening any finished walls. The finish crew came in behind us and worked around the installed lift without any drama.
Delivery week: what shows up on the truck
A 2 post car lift arrives on a flatbed as a set of pallets and a big box. Two columns, packed with their internal cables and safety mechanisms in place, arrive on one pallet each. The four arms, packed with their pads and truck adapters, arrive as another pallet. The overhead crossbeam, the hydraulic power unit, the fluid, the hoses, the anchor kit, and the owner manual arrive in a large crate. Total weight is between eighteen hundred and twenty-two hundred pounds for a mid-tier unit ready for install day.
Our customer’s barn had a wide overhead door and enough interior clearance to bring everything in with a forklift, which we brought on the truck. If the site had been tight, we would have used a pallet jack and hand-walked columns through a narrower opening. For a collector with a new build, we recommend planning the door opening and the interior floor path with lift delivery in mind — an extra foot of door width now saves an hour of maneuvering on delivery day and prevents scuffed finish work later.
First install: what we saw and adjusted
Install took a full day. The columns went up first, plumbed with a laser level to true vertical in both axes. Anchors were epoxy-set — our default for any 2 post car lift install that will see a long service life — and torqued to the manufacturer specification. Cables ran through the overhead crossbeam and the columns without any dragging or twist, and we tested equalization at three heights before we called it good. Then we load-tested with a marked vehicle to confirm the safeties engaged cleanly.
The one adjustment we made was to arm reach. The customer’s collection included one wide vintage vehicle with a broader track than modern cars, and the base arm configuration would have required the pads to sit at the very end of the extension. We swapped in longer extensions and re-set the arm stops so his widest vehicle sat cleanly on four hard points. That is the kind of small adjustment that makes a first-year ownership story work smoothly instead of turning into a series of small frustrations.
Wheel bearing service on the new lift
His first real use of the 2 post car lift was a wheel bearing service on the sports coupe about six weeks after install. He lifted the vehicle, dropped into the safety cams at working height, pulled all four wheels, and had access to the hub carriers from every angle. What had been an all-weekend project at the specialty shop three hours away became a Saturday afternoon in his own barn with no drive time. He called us Monday morning to say the lift had already justified itself on the very first job.
The specific advantage a 2 post car lift gives wheel bearing service is unobstructed lower-body access. On a four-post drive-on lift, the runways sit under the vehicle and block direct access to the hub carrier from below. On a 2 post car lift with wheels off, the entire under-carriage is open, and the tech can approach the bearing from any angle without lying flat on the floor on a creeper. For a collector doing this work occasionally, that access is what turns a dreaded job into a routine one.
Winter one: what surprised him
His first winter with the lift ran cleanly, but a few things surprised him. First, the heated barn floor was not as warm at floor level as he expected, and hydraulic fluid at cold temperatures thickened noticeably before the lift reached full speed. We recommended he cycle the lift a few times on a cold start to warm the fluid before putting a vehicle on it — a five-minute warm-up that saved wear on the seals over the long term and prevented any cold-shock damage to the power unit.
Second, road salt tracked into the barn during winter drives ended up under the columns. We handed him a maintenance kit — rust inhibitor for the columns, cable lube, and a floor squeegee for winter cleanup — and walked through the quarterly protocol. Third, LED lighting he had planned for the working bay ended up needing an adjustment because the overhead crossbeam of the lift cast a shadow directly over the hood of a vehicle in the up position. We added two column-mounted work lights to cover that shadow area completely.
What we would do differently on year two
Year one taught our customer a few things he would do differently. He would have specified a slightly wider column spread for his widest vintage vehicle from the start, saving the arm-extension adjustment. He would have run an additional 110V circuit to a wall outlet near each column for auxiliary tools and lights. He would have planned the LED lighting layout with lift shadow in mind, not as an afterthought later on. None of those are expensive fixes now, but they would have been simpler to build in during the original construction.
