Wheel bearing service is one of the jobs a body shop does not think about until it has to. A car comes in from a collision, gets straightened, and the tech pulls a knuckle to inspect the bearing behind it. Half the time the bearing has to come out and get pressed. That work happens next to the 2 post car lift, not on it, but the lift geometry drives whether the tech can rotate the knuckle out cleanly. A body shop foreman in Dubuque called us about exactly this problem last month. He wanted a two-post that made wheel bearing work faster, and he was open to us telling him what to buy. Here is that conversation, edited for length.

Why Body Shops Are a Special Case

General mechanical shops care about drive-through width and door-swing clearance. Body shops care about all of those plus one more thing: the ability to walk a wheeled press cart, a MIG welder, and a torch trolley into the bay while the vehicle is in the air. That is a floor-space problem, not a lift problem, but it puts pressure on the column footprint and the column-to-column spacing. A body-shop 2 post car lift needs a wider drive-through than a general-mechanical two-post because the tech has to move equipment around the columns, not just walk past them.

Our Dubuque foreman had a bay that was fourteen feet wide interior-to-interior. That is generous for a passenger-car body shop but not luxurious. If we put in a standard column-to-column-spacing of about 130 inches, he would have less than a foot on each side of the columns for equipment. That is workable but tight. We ended up recommending a wide-column-spacing variant that opened the drive-through to about 138 inches and stole a couple inches from each side of the bay. Small tradeoff, big gain in daily quality of life.

Wheel Bearing Removal on a Two-Post: What Actually Happens

To press a front wheel bearing, the tech typically removes the knuckle from the vehicle while it is on the 2 post car lift. That means unbolting the ball joint, the outer tie rod end, the caliper and rotor, the strut lower mount, and the axle nut. Then the knuckle comes off the axle stub and gets carried to the press. All of that unbolting happens with the tech reaching into the wheel well from behind the wheel, so column position matters. On an asymmetric configuration the column sits close to the front of the wheel well; on a symmetric configuration it sits closer to the rocker panel.

For most passenger cars, asymmetric or wide-asymmetric is easier for knuckle removal because the tech is not fighting the column when swinging a breaker bar. But for pickup truck knuckle work, especially on full-size half-tons and three-quarter-tons, symmetric gives better front-arm reach and lets the tech access the axle nut without a column obstruction. The Dubuque body shop sees mostly passenger cars and light SUVs, so asymmetric was the right call. If he had done heavy pickup collision work, symmetric would have been better.

Rear Wheel Bearing Considerations

Rear wheel bearings are often assembly-type units that come off with a hub. On a rear-wheel-drive vehicle the axle has to come out of the differential and slide toward the tech. That length can be over three feet on some pickups. Column position on the rear arms determines whether the axle slides out cleanly or has to be angled around the column. On symmetric geometry the rear column sits close to the rear wheel well; on asymmetric the rear column is offset backward, so the axle has more clearance to slide.

That is why asymmetric can be a bit better for rear axle work, contrary to the intuition that symmetric is more balanced. For a body shop doing occasional rear-drive collision work, this is a meaningful advantage. The Dubuque foreman had not thought about the rear-axle geometry before we walked him through it. Once we did, he saw that the arm configuration on the 2 post car lift he was replacing had been costing him ten to fifteen minutes per rear-drive job for years. Small friction, added up over hundreds of jobs, is real money.

Capacity Sizing for Body Shops

Body shops rarely put a full-size truck on a two-post because trucks that come in for collision work usually go on a frame rack instead. But they routinely put passenger cars and light SUVs on the two-post, and the lift needs enough capacity margin to handle a car with a partial load of parts and body panels bolted or unbolted. Ten thousand pounds of rated capacity is plenty for anything up to a full-size sedan or a compact SUV. Twelve thousand pounds gives comfortable margin for anything short of a heavy-duty pickup.

Our recommendation for the Dubuque shop was a 12,000 lb 2 post car lift with wide-asymmetric geometry. Not because he expected to lift a twelve-thousand-pound vehicle, but because the extra capacity comes with slightly beefier columns, thicker arm tubes, and stouter safety gates. Those things are worth the small price bump for a body shop context where the lift will see rougher use than in a typical mechanical shop. He liked the answer and asked us to spec both bays the same for consistency across his techs.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Bar Fit

His bay ceilings were twelve feet ten inches to the truss chord, with a couple of ceiling-mounted paint-booth exhaust fixtures that dropped to twelve feet three at the low points. Overhead was a possibility, but tight. On a 12,000 lb overhead 2 post car lift, the overhead bar deploys at about twelve feet six when raised to full height. That would kiss his exhaust fixtures every raise. We had two options: relocate the fixtures, or go baseplate.

The fixtures were plumbed into a shared exhaust manifold that would have cost him a few thousand dollars in ductwork changes to move. Baseplate was the smarter answer at that price differential. We spec’d a wide-asymmetric baseplate with a discreet cable cover across the crossover so his techs would not trip on it. The tradeoff is that he now has a floor obstruction between the bay entrance and the columns, which he mitigated with a bright yellow paint stripe along the cable cover so nobody misses it in a hurry.

Install Timeline and What We Did

Install ran three days for two bays because we had to core-drill and re-pour one small footing where a control-post trench had crossed the planned column position at a shallow depth. That is a body-shop-specific problem: shops that have been renovated over the years often have shallow buried conduit or hydraulic runs in unexpected places. We always recommend a ground-penetrating radar scan before drilling anchor holes in a body-shop bay, because the cost of the scan is much less than the cost of hitting a hidden line.

Once the concrete was ready, actual lift install was one full day per bay: anchor drilling and setting, column plumb and shim, cross-member bolting, hydraulic plumbing, cable dressing, and commissioning with a load test. The Dubuque foreman signed off on both bays on the third day and started running production work on the first bay while we finished the second. Six weeks in, his knuckle-removal times were down noticeably and his techs stopped complaining about the old columns being in the way.

Buying Advice for Any Body Shop

If you are in the same situation, three pieces of advice. First, pick your arm configuration based on your typical vehicle mix, not on brochure price. Asymmetric or wide-asymmetric for passenger cars and light SUVs; symmetric for pickups. Second, oversize the capacity by one tier for the extra structural margin, not because you expect to load the lift to its limits. Third, scan the floor before you drill; body-shop floors have hidden lines more often than you expect.
