Why the right 2 post car lift starts with the vehicle, not the price
The crew chief in northern Missouri opened with a budget number. That is the wrong first question. The right first question is what car is going on the arms, how often, and what work you plan to do under it. A late-model circle-track Camaro with a full cage weighs more than the curb weight of a stock one, and shock work means the car will spend hours in the air with wheels dangling. Ceiling height and door swing before you talk model numbers
Every conversation about a two-post in northern Missouri that skips the tape measure ends the same way: someone eats a restocking fee or lives with a lift that will not raise a car to a comfortable working height. The delta between 9K and 10K is usually smaller than customers expect, and the delta between 10K and 12K is bigger than most first-time buyers guess. That is why we push race shops and multi-bay commercial buyers toward the top of that range if it fits the ceiling.
What actually drives the price is column steel, carriage rollers, cylinder wall thickness, and the arm design. A cheap import at a given nameplate rating is not the same product as a Rotary or Challenger at the same rating, and the difference shows up in cycle life. For the race shop we quoted, we landed on a 10,000-pound clear-floor unit as the sweet spot: enough capacity to swallow every car on the roster, a floor that will not trip a jack, and a resale value that holds if the shop ever wants to trade up. Symmetric vs asymmetric for shock and suspension pulls
A symmetric lift puts both arms at 90 degrees to the columns; an asymmetric lift rotates the columns so the arms reach forward and back at unequal angles, which lets the driver step out with the door swung wide. For a shop that mainly wraps around a car in one place — pulling shocks, coilovers, and control arms all shift — asymmetric is usually the better working position, because the front of the car sits back in the bay and you get straight-line access to the strut towers and lower arms. When the arms are loaded and the vehicle is at working height, the restraint keeps the arm from swinging out from under the pickup point if the vehicle shifts. If yours ticks up and clicks down like a ratchet, that is the tooth engaging in the pin — and if it does not, the restraint is bad and the lift is not safe. The safety cams are the mechanical locks that catch every few inches of rise; they are what stops the carriage from dropping if the cylinder ever fails. Every lift should audibly click each safety as it rises, and the operator should always lower onto safeties before crawling under. We turned down a lead once from a shop that wanted a used lift with the safety cam torn off — no working shop should own a lift with the cams disabled. Baseplate vs overhead when the ceiling is tight
Not every shop has 14 feet of clear ceiling. If yours is closer to 11 or 12, a baseplate configuration — with the equalizer cables and hydraulic hoses running through a plate at the floor between the columns instead of an overhead crossbar — is a real option. Baseplates get you full raise without the overhead beam eating headroom, at the cost of a slight trip risk at the floor and a slower feel when you swing arms wide. For a race shop that keeps a clean bay and never rolls a jack across the middle, that trade is easy. For a general repair shop that constantly moves creepers and jacks, we usually recommend overhead.
The northern Missouri shop ended up with an overhead because their ceiling gave them room, and because they liked the cleaner floor. Whatever you pick, plan the concrete first: five inches of 3,000 psi with clean rebar is the practical floor for a 10K unit, and a thin slab is not something we will anchor into no matter how good your discount was.
