The vehicle math: why a built truck needs a real 2 post car lift
A stock Tacoma weighs about 4,500 pounds. Add a full aluminum front bumper with winch, sliders, a rear bumper with tire carrier, a roof-top tent with mounts, drawer systems, second battery and inverter, additional fuel and water, and a moderate lift with 33-inch tires, and you are staring at 6,500 to 7,000 pounds of loaded truck. A 4Runner builds out even heavier. The builder’s shop routinely has 6,800-pound rigs on the arms, and he needs comfortable headroom on capacity for the occasional 7,500-pound stretched Land Cruiser. A 9,000-pound two-post is too tight; a 10,000-pound commercial 2 post car lift is the right home.
He had been shopping a home-grade 9K online, and we talked him off it. Not because a home 9K is a bad lift — it is a fine lift for a stock vehicle in a personal garage — but because his use case is a small commercial operation with heavy custom trucks, and the daily cycle count is higher than a home unit is designed for. He wanted to know he could do that job himself in year ten without waiting on a distributor. Daily maintenance workflow on a build shop lift

Built trucks carry weight off-center. A rear bumper with tire carrier shifts the rear-weight balance backward; a front winch bumper shifts front-weight forward. On the arms of a two-post, that means the pad load is not perfectly balanced and the arm restraint mechanism sees more moment force than a stock vehicle would generate. Both the Rotary and Challenger commercial arm restraints handle it without complaint, but the operator has to be paying attention on pad placement. A pad that is a few inches off the frame lift point can turn into a swing risk on an off-center rig.
We coached him on pad placement, arm restraint verification on every raise, and the visual cues that tell you the vehicle is loading the arms evenly. He now does a quick tick-check of the restraint gears on each corner before the vehicle leaves the floor. That habit has saved several arms over the years across our customer base. What we would build differently for the next overlanding shop
Looking back on the install a year later, the one thing we would change is the lighting under the working envelope. His shop had general overhead LEDs when we installed, but he found himself running a portable work light under every truck for close-in work. In year two we are helping him add dedicated column-mounted LEDs that swing with the lift up and down. Small ergonomic improvements like that turn a good lift install into a great shop, and they cost less than most owners assume.
