Rebuild the old 2 post car lift or replace it?
The first call we make on a leaking or dropping two-post is honest triage. If the brand is Rotary, Challenger, Forward, or BendPak and the lift is under 20 years old, rebuild kits are on our shelf and the economics usually favor a rebuild. Cylinder seal kits run in the low-to-mid three-figure range per cylinder, cable sets in the mid three-figures, and a complete arm-restraint gear set is similar. A full rebuild on a solid-brand 2 post car lift can push a decade of additional service out of the unit for well under the cost of a new one. If the columns are straight and the base plates are corrosion-free, the rebuild is usually the right answer for a working farm shop.
Where the math breaks is with off-brand and discontinued units. A western Illinois farm shop we quoted last spring had a two-post from a brand that no longer supports the model. We could rebuild the hydraulic cylinder with a universal seal kit, but the arm-restraint gears and safety latches were unobtainable. Once the lift is one bad part away from being scrap metal, the rebuild dollar is thrown away. In that case we quote a new lift and take the old one for scrap credit against the freight. Making that call honestly is what separates a lift distributor from a used-car lot.
Hydraulic cylinder failure modes we see most often
Two-post hydraulic cylinders fail in three predictable ways. The first is a rod seal leak — the piston pushes past the wiper and rod seal, and oil weeps down the cylinder body onto the shop floor. That is a rebuild, not a replace. The second is a piston seal that lets pressure bypass internally — the lift drifts down under load even with the safety locks disengaged. That is also a rebuild in most cases. The third is a scored or pitted rod — the chrome plating on the rod is compromised, and no seal kit will hold. That requires a rod replacement or a full cylinder replacement.
Diagnosis matters because the fix is different. On a rod seal leak we pull the cylinder, disassemble the gland, install a new seal kit, and reassemble. Half a day for an experienced tech. On a scored rod we replace the rod itself or swap the whole cylinder. Cylinders are model-specific — a Rotary SPO cylinder is not interchangeable with a Challenger CL cylinder — so we verify part numbers before we quote. A western Illinois farmer whose cylinder was drifting called us thinking he needed a whole new lift; a seal kit and an afternoon put him back in service for a fraction of the cost.
Seal kits, rod condition, and the honest rebuild economics
When we quote a rebuild we quote three line items: the seal kit, the labor to install it, and the freight if we are shipping the parts. Seal kits for major brands run mid-to-high three-figures. Labor to pull a cylinder, rebuild the gland, and reinstall runs about the same. If the rod is compromised, add the cost of a new rod or complete cylinder — that pushes the total up but the lift still comes out cheaper than replacement. Total rebuild economics on a solid-brand two-post usually land in the low four-figure range including all seals, all cables, and a hydraulic fluid change.
The honest test is: what does the lift look like when we walk in. If the columns are straight, the paint is intact, the anchor bolts are tight, and the electrical is clean, the lift has another decade in it once the wearing parts are refreshed. If the columns show weld cracks, the base plates are corroded, or the electrical is a bird nest of splices, the lift is at the end of its economic life and replacement is the right answer. We do not sell rebuilds to customers whose lift will fail in another year — that is a bad deal for both of us.
When a new 2 post car lift is the smarter buy
A new 2 post car lift makes sense when the existing lift is off-brand, discontinued, structurally compromised, or so old that ALI certification is impossible. It also makes sense when the farm shop needs have outgrown the original lift — a 9K rated two-post that was fine for half-tons in 1998 does not fit today crew-cab three-quarter-ton fleet. In those cases a new 10K, 12K, or 15K commercial two-post at current pricing is a better long-term investment than throwing money at a lift that will not scale to the vehicles the shop actually services.
Freight to western Illinois from our warehouse and the manufacturer plants runs a few hundred dollars in most cases. Turnkey install by our crew on a slab that meets spec runs a similar number. CV axle and half-shaft work: why the lift matters
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is one of the highest-volume jobs on any farm-vehicle service floor. Modern all-wheel-drive pickups and SUVs eat CV boots and CV joints on a predictable schedule, especially in gravel and dirt-driveway country. To pull a half-shaft cleanly you need the vehicle high enough to swing the shaft down and out, and you need clear access to the transaxle or differential to unbolt the inner joint. A two-post gives you both because the wheels hang free and the driveshaft area is unblocked by ramps or floor plates.
A four-post cannot do CV axle work without a rolling jack and even then the geometry fights you. A scissor lift is fine for tire rotations but does not lift high enough for a comfortable half-shaft pull. The two-post is the correct tool. When a western Illinois farm shop tells us they do a lot of AWD half-shaft work, we quote a 2 post car lift with a full rise of at least 72 inches from arm pad to arm pad. That gives the tech room to stand and swing a shaft out at eye level. Lower-rise lifts save a few hundred dollars and cost the tech hours over the life of the lift.
Site inspection before a western Illinois install
