Column steel: single-piece vs bolt-together, and why gauge matters
The first thing the Ankeny foreman asked was column construction, and he was right to. On a 2 post car lift, the column is the whole game — it takes the vertical load, the moment arm of the vehicle out over the pads, and the racking force when a truck shifts under load. Single-piece columns machined from formed heavy-plate steel are what you want. Bolted-together sections show up on the lowest-cost imports, and every bolt joint is a place for the column to flex. On the Rotary and Challenger commercial units we ship, the column is a single formed section with continuous welds — no field splices.
Gauge is the other half of the story. A 10,000-pound commercial two-post should be running column plate in the 3/16 to 1/4 inch range depending on the section; anything thinner shows up in the deflection curve when you push toward rated capacity. The Ankeny shop had watched their old lift start to bow slightly at the top of the column under a loaded diesel, which is the first-visible symptom of an under-gauged section. For their replacement we spec’d a heavier commercial-grade 2 post car lift and their carriage travel is now bang-on plumb even at full rise with a one-ton in the air.
Cylinder bore and wall thickness across model numbers
The hydraulic cylinder is where the sales-brochure numbers stop mattering and the install-manual numbers start. A 10K two-post typically runs cylinders in the 2.5-inch to 3-inch bore range, with wall thickness that varies by brand. Bigger bore means lower operating pressure at the same load, which means less seal wear over a decade of daily cycles. When we compared model numbers side by side for the Ankeny foreman, the Rotary units came in at 2.75-inch bore, the Challenger commercial units at 3-inch. Both are appropriate for the load, but the 3-inch bore runs cooler on a hard-use bay.
Seal life is the other real-world number. A well-built cylinder should give you 10 to 15 years of daily service before the piston seals need attention. When they do need attention, we stock the rebuild kits for every 2 post car lift model we sell, keyed by the cylinder tag number stamped on the barrel. The Ankeny shop was replacing a lift where nobody could find the original cylinder tag — that is what pushed them to us, because their old distributor could not source a rebuild kit without a serial. Traceability is a real technical spec, even if it does not show up on the datasheet.
Rise, overall height, and clearance under the arms
Three numbers on the spec sheet get confused all the time: overall height, rise, and clearance under the swung arm at rest. Overall height is the total column height from the floor to the top of the shutoff bar or crossbar; rise is how far the vehicle contact pad travels from the floor position to full raise; clearance under arms is the drive-through height when the arms are swung out of the way. On a typical commercial 10K asymmetric two-post, those numbers land around 12 feet overall, 73 inches of rise, and 90 to 100 inches of drive-through clearance.
The Ankeny bay has 13 feet 2 inches of clear ceiling and a torsion-spring door that eats about 8 inches of headroom when open. That gave them enough for a standard 12-foot column with maybe 6 inches to spare, but not for a 14-foot column. If we had ignored those numbers and sold them the taller unit some suppliers push by default, the shutoff bar would have hit the door track on install day. This is why we ask for the drawings and photos before we quote a 2 post car lift — the spec sheet only helps if you match it to the real bay.
Arm reach at pad and asymmetric offset angle
Arm geometry is the spec most first-time buyers skip. On an asymmetric 2 post car lift, the columns are rotated about 30 degrees so the arms reach forward more than back; this positions the vehicle behind the columns and lets the door swing without hitting steel. The trade-off is that the front arms need more effective length to reach the lift point on a longer wheelbase. Rear arm reach at the pad on a Rotary asymmetric commercial unit is around 26 inches, front around 43 inches. Numbers vary by model — we send the exact install-manual figures on request.
The Ankeny shop works everything from a Miata to an F-450, and the F-450 wheelbase is the constraint. We put the truck on a piece of paper, sketched pickup points, and confirmed the front arms would reach the frame lift zone at working extension without maxing out the telescope. Some commercial two-posts also offer drop-end arms with a lower minimum pad height for low-clearance sports cars. Their shop sees Corvettes and Mustangs regularly, so the drop-end option went on the order. A 2 post car lift is only as useful as the geometry it can hit on the vehicles you actually service.
Motor draw, single-phase vs three-phase, and shop power
The Ankeny bay has 240-volt single-phase power off a standard shop panel, which is what most commercial repair shops run. A 10K two-post typically calls for a 20-amp circuit on 240V single-phase, drawing something like 12 to 15 amps under load on the way up. If the shop is set up for three-phase, the motor runs cooler and starts smoother, but single-phase is completely acceptable for a general-repair use case. We confirmed his panel had spare capacity and the run to the lift location was under 40 feet before we finalized the model.
What we would not do is put a commercial two-post on a 120-volt circuit, no matter what the brochure says about a residential 2 post car lift model. We have seen underpowered installs where the motor is fighting the circuit every raise, contactors are burning out, and the customer thinks they bought a bad lift when they actually bought a bad power drop. If your shop or garage only has 120V, the honest conversation is either an upgrade to 240 or a lower-capacity home unit. We will tell you that on the first call so nobody wastes money.
Capacity ratings, ALI certification, and what the tag actually promises
The 10,000-pound number on the sticker is the maximum load the lift is rated to hold safely. It is not the load you should run every day at full extension. Rule of thumb: run the day-to-day work at 60 to 75 percent of rated capacity for the longest service life. On a 10K unit, that is 6,000 to 7,500 pounds of typical daily vehicle, with the full 10K available for the occasional heavy customer. The Ankeny foreman’s heaviest regular vehicle is around 7,800 pounds fully fueled, which puts him inside that band with headroom for the rare F-450 conversion that rolls in.
ALI Gold certification is a real spec, and it matters. It means the lift design has been third-party tested to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for load, cycle life, and safety-system function. We tell customers to check the sticker on the column — no sticker, no proof of testing, and no argument in an insurance claim if something ever goes wrong. Certification is inexpensive insurance and we will not sell an uncertified lift into a commercial shop.
