A northeast Iowa fleet shop’s decision
Our customer runs five service vehicles out of a small shop north of Cedar Rapids. His fleet is a mix of half-ton pickups and full-size vans, all with over 150,000 miles on the clock, and every unit needs an oil pan gasket, a transmission pan gasket, or some other underside gasket work at least once a year. He had been renting time at a friend’s shop for years and was ready to buy a 2 post car lift of his own. The three questions we ask before we bless a used unit are: is the ALI Gold certification current for that model and configuration, are the original owner manual and service records available, and can we inspect the unit in place before it moves off the seller’s slab?
If the answer to any of those three is no, the used lift is a gamble. A cracked column weld or a fatigued cable is not visible from a photo, and moving a lift with either of those problems reveals them at the worst possible moment. When we can inspect a used lift in the seller’s shop, cycle it under load, and confirm the paperwork, we have had good outcomes for customers who bought used. New lift: what you get for the money

The other thing a new lift buys you is the parts pipeline. Fifteen years from now, when you need a specific cable, seal kit, or lock dog, a currently-manufactured lift will have parts available same-day from our shelf. A fifteen-year-old used lift is a bet that parts will still be available in year twenty-five — sometimes yes, sometimes no. Oil pan gasket work is one of those repairs where the lift geometry directly affects how long the job takes. On most half-ton pickups, that is about five and a half to six feet of clearance under the vehicle at working height without stooping.
Our customer’s fleet included several transverse-engine vans where oil pan removal requires dropping the subframe — a repair where the vehicle sits at height for several hours while the subframe is unbolted, dropped, and re-set. That means the safety cams have to engage cleanly and the lift has to hold at a fixed height reliably. Both a used and a new 2 post car lift can do this if the safeties are in good order, but on a used unit you have to verify — not assume — that they are, and that verification is not free.

Disassembly at the seller’s site, transport, storage of columns and arms that do not stack cleanly, re-erection at the buyer’s site with new anchors and anchor holes drilled to spec — none of that is trivial or fast. Add fresh hydraulic fluid, new cables if the originals show any wear, a fresh ALI inspection, and any control-box updates that a fifteen-year-old unit might need to meet current code, and the cheap side of the equation shrinks meaningfully once you add it all up.
None of this makes buying used a bad decision — for the right customer with the right lift and a shop that already has good concrete, used works. But the honest framework compares fully installed and commissioned cost on both sides, not sticker price on one side and installed price on the other. Three questions decide used versus new for a small fleet: how long do you plan to keep the shop and use the lift, how much are you willing to pay for warranty and certainty, and does the specific used unit you found pass our inspection? If the shop lifetime is short — under ten years — used often makes sense on the numbers. If it is twenty years, the total cost gap closes and warranty starts to matter more.
