A 2 post car lift for an EV specialty shop in the Quad Cities comes with a specific problem: EVs are heavy, batteries hang below the frame, and the lifting points are not always where a technician’s habit says they should be. On top of that, every EV shop owner has heard the same myths from someone about lift configuration: that overhead is unsafe for EVs, that baseplate is required, that Tesla-specific pad kits are optional. Myth #1: Overhead Two-Post Lifts Are Unsafe for EVs

The first myth we bust for every Quad Cities EV shop owner is that overhead-style two-post lifts are somehow unsafe for electric vehicles. They are not. An overhead clear-floor two-post has a low-profile bar spanning the top of the columns that carries the hydraulic and safety-lock lines; the clear-floor design means there is no obstruction across the drive-through. Overhead lifts are the industry default for a reason: they are structurally the strongest configuration, they have the cleanest floor, and they work equally well for internal-combustion vehicles and EVs.

The myth started from a misreading of some early EV service documentation, which specified pad locations but did not restrict lift style. Nothing about an EV battery pack makes an overhead lift more dangerous than a baseplate lift. The load path through the columns and arms is identical. What matters is pad placement, because the arms have to reach the manufacturer-designated jacking points on the vehicle, which for most EVs are on the frame rail outboard of the battery. As long as the arm geometry can reach those points, the overhead lift is fine. We have installed overhead two-post lifts for EV specialty shops across eastern Iowa and Illinois, and none of them have had a lift-related issue. The myth is persistent because it sounds cautious. In practice it is just misinformed.

Myth #2: You Need a Baseplate Lift for Every EV

Myth number two is that a baseplate 2 post car lift is required for EV work because there might not be enough overhead clearance. This one is half-true and mostly wrong. Baseplate lifts have a low bar across the floor between the columns instead of an overhead bar; they exist for one reason: low ceilings. If your shop has 9 feet of ceiling clearance, you cannot fit a standard overhead two-post and you need a baseplate. If your shop has 12 feet of ceiling clearance, which most Quad Cities commercial buildings do, you have every reason to buy overhead.

Baseplate lifts have a real trade-off: you drive over the base bar every time a vehicle enters or exits the bay, which is a trip hazard, an oil-leak hazard, and a debris hazard. In an EV shop where technicians roll tool carts, low-rise EV battery jacks, and diagnostic equipment across the floor constantly, the base bar becomes a real productivity drag. The EV factor does not change this calculation. An EV lifted on an overhead lift and an EV lifted on a baseplate lift experience the exact same load path through the arms and columns. Choose configuration based on ceiling, not based on drivetrain. That is our advice to every EV shop owner in the Quad Cities we spec a lift for, and none of them have regretted going overhead when the ceiling allows it.

The 2 Post Car Lift Myths EV Shops Believe

There are three more 2 post car lift myths EV shops believe that we hear regularly. First: you need a special EV-rated lift. No such certification exists at the model level. ALI Gold certification covers the lift’s structural and safety standards regardless of whether the vehicle on it is a Model Y or a Camry. Any ALI Gold-certified two-post from Rotary, Challenger, or BendPak is rated for the vehicles you are lifting up to capacity. Second: the battery cannot be near the arms. The battery is between the arms, not on them; the arms lift the frame rails and the battery hangs untouched underneath. The clearance between the battery bottom and the shop floor is a bay-workflow question, not a lift question.

Third: two-posts are being replaced by four-posts for EV work. Also not true. The 2 post car lift lets the wheels hang free for brake and suspension work; a four-post drives-on and keeps the wheels loaded, which is wrong for a rotor swap on a Model 3. Both configurations have a place in an EV shop (a two-post for wheels-off service, a four-post for alignment and storage) but the two-post is not going anywhere. When Quad Cities EV shops call us confused about which lift to buy because of what they read online, we walk through these three myths and the confusion clears fast. The physics of a lift do not care about the drivetrain.

The Real Constraint: Battery Pad Positioning

What actually matters for lifting an EV on a 2 post car lift is pad positioning. EV manufacturers publish specific jacking points, and those points are on the frame outboard of the battery pack. On a Tesla Model 3 or Y there are four designated pucks; on a Ford Mach-E, four different points; on a Chevy Bolt, another set. The correct answer is model-specific pad kits, often sold as puck adapters, that fit into the standard pad cups on the lift and locate onto the vehicle’s designated points.

Rotary and Challenger both offer puck adapter sets that cover the major EV models, and we stock them in Iowa. When a Quad Cities EV shop calls us to spec a two-post, we ask which EVs are on their menu and we quote the puck kit as a line item on the same purchase order. Pad positioning is where EV service goes wrong when it goes wrong; not because of the lift, but because a technician uses generic pads on a stock cup and misses the designated point by an inch, catching a battery cover or a body panel instead of the frame. The lift did not cause the problem. The pad choice did. Any EV shop that treats pad kits as an afterthought is setting themselves up for a body-shop bill they did not want.

Brake Service and Rotor Swaps on a Two-Post

Brake service and rotor swaps are the most common EV work that puts the vehicle on a 2 post car lift. The workflow is straightforward: raise the vehicle on the pads at the designated points, engage the safety locks, remove the wheels, and swap the rotors or pads. What makes EV brake work slightly different from ICE work is the regenerative-braking rotor wear pattern; EVs use their friction brakes less often but still need rotor replacement every 40-70k miles depending on driving style, and the rotors are often stuck harder than on an ICE vehicle because they get less thermal cycling.

A busy Quad Cities EV shop will do 15-25 rotor swaps a week during the winter transition months, and every one of them starts with the vehicle up on the two-post. Arm geometry matters here; three-stage front and rear telescoping arms let the technician position the pads at exactly the designated jacking points without swapping stack heights. Capacity matters too; a Model X or a Rivian R1T is a 5,000-6,000 pound vehicle and while a 10K lift is technically enough, a 12K gives a reserve margin we like for a busy EV bay. Padded overhead safety bars are more of a factor in EV bays because Tesla ride height is tall enough that a standing tech can bump into the bar. Small design features add up on the workflow.

Column Height and Ceiling Clearance in a Quad Cities EV Bay

Ceiling clearance in a Quad Cities EV bay is the number that determines whether a 2 post car lift can be overhead or has to be baseplate. Standard overhead two-post columns are 143 inches from floor to the top of the crossbar; add a safety margin and you need a minimum of 12 feet of ceiling clearance for a standard overhead lift. Extended-height columns run 155 to 165 inches, which needs 13 to 14 feet of ceiling. Most modern commercial buildings in the Quad Cities meet 12 feet. Older buildings (repurposed garages, older service bays, converted retail spaces) sometimes do not.

When we walk a bay, we measure the actual clear height under any HVAC ducts, sprinkler lines, or lighting fixtures, and we take the lowest number as the design constraint. If the ceiling is 11 feet 6 inches, we spec a baseplate (a Rotary SPOA10-BP or similar) and we make sure the customer understands the drive-over trade-off. If the ceiling is 13 feet, we spec extended columns to give the tallest EV in the fleet plenty of headroom on the pads. There is no one-size answer. What matters is measuring correctly before ordering. The most common mistake we correct on a spec call is a customer who guessed at the ceiling height and needs to remeasure with a laser. Guessing here costs money.

What We Recommend for a Quad Cities EV Shop

For a Quad Cities EV specialty shop with a modern building and a mixed EV menu, our default recommendation is a Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger CL10 overhead symmetric 2 post car lift with three-stage arms and standard columns, plus the puck adapter kits for the specific EV brands the shop services. That combination handles Tesla, Ford, Chevy, Rivian, Lucid, and any legacy EV without a configuration change. Total install runs a normal day for our Iowa crew, and the machine is commissioned and load-tested before we leave the parking lot.
