Measure the Ceiling in Three Places, Not One
Home garages are rarely perfectly framed. The ceiling near the door might be nine and a half feet but the ceiling at the back wall might be nine two because of a HVAC drop or a light fixture soffit. Measure at three points along the planned lift centerline. Take the lowest number. That is your working clearance for an atlas 2-post lift, minus a couple inches for the shutoff bar to swing without touching anything.
The Quad Cities buyer measured ten feet one inch at his lowest point, right under a duct. That gave us about nine feet ten inches of usable clearance after we accounted for the shutoff bar. An overhead-style lift in that space with a mid-size SUV up would give him about eighty inches of vehicle underside height, which is plenty for oil changes, differential service, and general maintenance. If your lowest reading is under nine feet six inches, we shift you toward a baseplate configuration and warn about the floor crossover.
Overhead Door Swing and Interference
The other clearance question home buyers forget is the garage door itself. An overhead sectional door swings up and back into the ceiling space. When it is fully open, the tracks and rollers hang down into the room, sometimes eleven or twelve inches below the ceiling depending on the door hardware.
For the Quad Cities buyer, his door tracks came down to a point about six inches below the top of his top beam allowance. So we had to plan the lift far enough back into the garage that the shutoff bar at full rise would never collide with the door tracks or the raised door. Twenty inches from where the door tracks stop is usually enough. If your garage is short front-to-back, this can force you to give up a bay or shift the lift sideways. Better to know before you order than after uncrating.
Choosing Between a Two-Post and a Scissor

Our answer was no, for his use case. Scissor lifts are great for tire and light service where you never need to remove the wheels. On a two-post, the same job is thirty-five minutes standing up with a catch pan and gravity doing the work.

The Quad Cities buyer figured he would use the lift roughly forty times a year across all three vehicles for various maintenance tasks. Home garage installs are a little different from shop installs. There is no forklift. The driveway may be sloped.
