A car restoration shop owner in Waukee called us last month asking whether he should order an atlas 2-post lift in a symmetric or asymmetric arm configuration. He was building out a second bay for a project-car queue that ranged from a 1967 Camaro to a modern F-250 crew cab, and the arm choice was going to lock in the way that bay worked for the next fifteen years. We spent forty minutes on the phone walking a decision tree from his ceiling height down to his exhaust-flange access, and he ended up ordering the opposite of what he thought he wanted when he called. Start With the Vehicle Mix, Not the Brochure
The very first branch of the tree is what you drive onto the lift. A symmetric column places both columns of an atlas 2-post lift equally split across the drive-through path. The vehicle is centered between them, and the arms are the same length front and rear. Asymmetric columns are rotated roughly thirty degrees so the vehicle sits rearward on the lift, and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. That geometry exists to keep the driver’s door clear of the column when the vehicle is up.
If your queue is mostly modern cars where door swing matters, asymmetric wins. If your queue is heavy on trucks, vans, and long-wheelbase project cars, symmetric wins because a symmetric arm set can pick up longer vehicles without the rear tires hitting the rear arms. A restoration shop with a mixed queue is the exact case where the brochure alone will not give you the right answer.
Budget Tier and the Real Cost Ladder
The next branch is what you can spend. A budget-tier home-shop atlas 2-post lift lives in one price band; a commercial-tier Rotary or Challenger lives one to two bands above it. Between them is a mid-tier space where BendPak XPR-series columns sit. For a restoration shop where the lift will run three or four vehicles a day but be up for six to ten hours per vehicle, the mid-tier band is usually the honest answer even when the budget was written for the bottom band.
The reason is not durability — a home-tier column will survive the load — it is comfort under long jobs. Lock-position spacing every two to two-and-a-half inches matters more when you are standing under a body-off Camaro for six hours than when you are running an oil change in twenty minutes. If you have to compromise, compromise on paint or on options, not on lock spacing and arm-restraint quality.
Ceiling Height and the Overhead Question
Waukee shop buildings run a mix of ten, twelve, and fourteen foot ceilings. Overhead-plate 2-post lifts pull a cable across the top and are the most common configuration; baseplate lifts run everything through the floor and add drive-across clutter but keep the ceiling clean. On a fourteen-foot ceiling with a lifting height of about seventy-eight inches, an overhead column has plenty of room. On a ten-foot ceiling, an overhead column is going to strand a tall SUV three inches from full lift.
If your queue includes a lifted truck, or if you plan to sit on a wheeled seat under a hoisted body during metal work, measure your actual ceiling before you pick between an overhead atlas 2-post lift and a baseplate configuration. The decision is not reversible after installation. We would rather sell you the right shape once than have you replace the shape in three years.
Exhaust Flange and Driveline Access
This is where the arm-length story shows up. On a symmetric arm set, both front and rear arms are the same length, so the pads land near the pinch weld of the frame at both ends. On an asymmetric set, the front arms are shorter and reach further under the front of the vehicle. For exhaust work on a modern crossover, symmetric gives you cleaner room under the middle of the vehicle because both pads are set the same distance from centerline.
For driveline access on a rear-wheel-drive project car with a long tailshaft, asymmetric can actually help — the shorter front arms clear the front subframe, and the longer rear arms tuck neatly under the rear frame rails so the driveshaft has visual and tool access from both sides. A restoration shop working equal parts pre-1975 iron and modern trucks is the exact case for two lifts of two different arm styles rather than trying to make one geometry do both jobs well.
Pad Adapter and Frame Contact Points
Every atlas 2-post lift ships with a stack of pad adapters. What ships in the box is not always what fits under the vehicle you plan to run tomorrow. Slotted adapters help with body-on-frame trucks; flat rubber pads help with modern unibody cars; pinch-weld adapters help with the smaller European chassis. On a restoration shop where the fleet spans forty years of chassis design, plan on buying a second and third set of adapters up front rather than trying to make one set work.
The other thing to keep in mind is pad wear on long jobs. When the same vehicle is on the pads for a week straight during metal work, the rubber compresses and the frame contact rings the pad into itself. That is not a failure — it is normal wear. Order a second full pad set at the same time you order the columns, and you will avoid the two-week shipping wait when the primary pads need swap.
Concrete, Anchors, and Waukee Building Age
Central Iowa concrete is a wide range. Newer Waukee shop buildings from the last ten years usually pour a six-inch slab that will hold anchors correctly; older buildings from the seventies and eighties often poured four inches with no rebar. Before we quote an install, we hammer-test the pad or pull a core if the age is unclear. If the pad is not right, no arm-style decision matters because the columns will not stay plumb under load.
If you have four inches or less, we will quote a saw-cut and pour before we set the columns. That step adds a day and some dollars but it protects the twenty-year life of the lift. An atlas 2-post lift installed on marginal concrete is not going to age gracefully regardless of how right the arm choice was. Do the concrete work once, correctly, and never think about it again.
The Recommendation We Gave the Waukee Shop
The owner came in wanting a symmetric overhead atlas 2-post lift because he had watched a YouTube video from a shop with a similar queue. After we walked through his ceiling height (twelve feet), his heaviest vehicle (a lifted F-250 at about seven thousand pounds), and his project queue (about sixty percent pre-1975 restorations and forty percent modern trucks), we ended up recommending an asymmetric column for the primary bay and setting up a plan for a symmetric column in the second bay six months later.
