A European-marque specialty shop in northwest Iowa called us about an auto lift last spring, and the owner walked into the conversation with a firm opinion: he wanted symmetric arms because a former mentor had told him asymmetric arms would twist the frame on a heavy sedan. That’s one of the more persistent myths in the two-post world, and it’s one of about half a dozen we hear on quote calls every month. This piece takes those myths one by one and separates the ones with a kernel of truth from the ones that need retiring, because a shop that gets the arm choice wrong lives with the decision for twenty years.

Myth One: Asymmetric Arms Twist the Frame

They don’t. Asymmetric arms shift the vehicle’s center of mass slightly rearward on the auto lift so the driver door can swing open at full rise, but the load path through the frame lift points is identical to a symmetric layout. The lifting force at each pad is normal to the frame rail, not lateral, and the frame doesn’t experience any shear or torsion beyond what a symmetric layout produces. The myth traces back to early asymmetric designs from the 1970s that had column-mounted swing arms with a different geometry, and those designs are not what any manufacturer builds today.

For a European-marque shop that lifts BMW, Audi, and Mercedes sedans with unibody construction, either arm style works. The frame lift points on a modern unibody are engineered for either symmetric or asymmetric contact, and the manufacturer publishes both patterns in the service manual. What matters more than symmetric vs asymmetric is arm-tip pad selection, because a slick metal pad on a factory jack point can damage the pinch-weld coating, and a set of rubber-topped pads with the correct notch for the pinch weld protects the underbody. Myth Two: Asymmetric Is Always the Better Choice for a Shop

Also not true. Asymmetric arms win when the primary use case is car service where the tech needs the door open at full rise: interior work, upholstery inspection, or in-cabin electrical diagnosis. Asymmetric loses when the primary use case is truck service or when the vehicle mix is dominated by long-wheelbase vehicles that don’t fit cleanly in the asymmetric bias.

For a European-marque shop that runs mostly sedans and hatchbacks, asymmetric is the default recommendation. For a shop that adds SUVs and pickups to the mix, symmetric evens out the vehicle weight distribution between the columns and gives better balance under load. We ask every shop for a customer-mix percentage before we spec the arm style, and we quote the option that fits the actual work being done, not the option someone told them about at a trade show. A wrong arm-style pick is one of the most common auto lift regrets, right behind a wrong ceiling measurement.

Myth Three: A Two-Post Can’t Do Alignment Work

False, but with a caveat. A two-post with turnplates and slip plates can do a wheel alignment, and we’ve quoted plenty of two-posts specifically for alignment shops that don’t have the ceiling for a scissor alignment lift. The turnplates sit under the front wheels on the arm pads, and the slip plates sit under the rear wheels, and the alignment tech does the same measurements a scissor lift allows.

The caveat is that a two-post costs the tech time on the setup. A dedicated scissor alignment lift with built-in turnplates in the runways lets the tech drive on and start measuring in about two minutes. A two-post with pad-mounted turnplates takes closer to five minutes to set up, because the turnplates have to be positioned, the vehicle has to be centered on the arms, and the slip plates have to slide out. For a European-marque shop that does a couple alignments a week, a two-post handles it. For a dedicated alignment shop doing a dozen alignments a day, a scissor alignment lift is faster. Both configurations are auto lift options, and both are valid; the volume decides.

Myth Four: Bigger Capacity Is Always Safer

Not really. A 15,000 lb auto lift used to lift a Volvo XC90 is over-specced by a factor of three, and the extra capacity doesn’t buy safety margin in any meaningful sense. What it does buy is larger columns, a wider footprint that takes more bay space, a taller shut-off bar that may not clear the ceiling, and a higher purchase price. The safety margin on any ALI-certified lift is already built into the rating; a 10,000 lb lift has been tested to a substantially higher load without failure.

Buy the capacity that matches your fleet plus a reasonable growth allowance. For a European-marque shop running sedans and mid-size SUVs, a 10,000 lb capacity is right. For a shop that occasionally lifts a Sprinter van or a heavy Land Rover, 12,000 lb is right. Don’t jump to 15,000 or 18,000 lb unless the shop actually lifts vehicles in that weight class regularly. Over-specifying capacity is one of the more expensive myths in the industry, and we push back on it every time it comes up in a quote call.

Myth Five: All Arm Restraints Are the Same

They’re not, and this is one of the myths that costs shops real safety margin, not just money. A two-position pin restraint holds the arm in one of two rotational positions and does nothing between them; a six-position gear-lock restraint holds the arm at every fifteen or twenty degrees of rotation with automatic engagement. Under a loaded vehicle, the arm is locked at whatever position it stopped, not at whatever position the pin happened to be near.

For a European-marque shop with tight-tolerance sedans where the frame lift points are exact and don’t tolerate misalignment, gear-lock restraints are the right spec. For a working shop where the tech might position the arm slightly off the ideal contact point, gear-lock restraints let the arm stay where the tech placed it rather than snapping to a coarse pin position that might be off the lift point. Every commercial-grade auto lift we install ships with gear-lock restraints because the incremental cost is small and the safety and workflow benefit is large. Don’t accept a two-position pin restraint on a modern shop lift.

Myth Six: You Can Skip the ALI Annual Inspection

You can’t, at least not without accepting liability that no shop owner should carry. The ALI-recommended annual inspection covers the cables, the cylinders, the safety cams, the arm restraints, the anchor bolts, and the hydraulic system, and it’s the documented record that in the event of an incident, the lift was maintained to industry standard. Insurance carriers ask for it. OSHA references it. A shop that skips it and then has a lift incident is defending itself with a maintenance record that says nothing.

We perform ALI-recommended inspections on any lift we’ve installed and on lifts from other installers when the shop wants a second opinion. The inspection takes about an hour per lift, generates a written report, and costs a small three-figure fee that pays for itself the first time an insurance carrier asks for documentation. For a European-marque shop where the customer vehicles are worth six figures each, the inspection is not optional. Book it annually and file the reports.

Getting the Arms Right the First Time

The right arm style, capacity, and restraint spec is a conversation, not a checklist. Bring us the vehicle mix, the shop layout, the ceiling measurement, and the customer-work profile, and we’ll quote an auto lift that matches. If the answer is symmetric arms with gear-lock restraints on a 10,000 lb standard-rise two-post, we quote that. If the answer is asymmetric arms with the same restraints for a mixed-service Euro shop, we quote that instead. There’s no house preference; there’s the shop’s actual work.
