A weekend hobbyist in Davenport called us about auto lifts for home garage transmission work, and the first thing he asked was whether his ceiling could handle a two-post. He was planning to rebuild the transmission in his project car over a winter, and he needed the vehicle high enough that he could drop the transmission with a jack from below while standing upright underneath. Ceiling height for transmission work is not the same as ceiling height for oil changes
An oil change wants the vehicle high enough for you to walk under it and swing a wrench. A transmission drop wants the vehicle high enough that the transmission itself, sitting on a jack, clears the underside of the vehicle when it’s lowered. On a typical passenger car, that means the vehicle needs to be about six feet in the air, and the transmission plus jack under it takes another three feet of vertical space. Add your own head clearance and you’re looking at ten feet or more of clear-to-obstruction ceiling.
The Davenport buyer’s residential garage had a nominal 10-foot ceiling, but the drywall was at 9’8 clear and there was a fluorescent fixture running down the center that stole another few inches. We measured the actual clear-to-obstruction as 9’5. That was borderline for the transmission drop use case, and we walked through configuration options that would maximize working height. Door swing and pull-through room
A two-post lift needs enough door opening to drive the vehicle straight in, and enough depth to pull the vehicle past the columns before centering. We measure the door opening width, the depth from door to back wall, and the swing of the overhead door tracks so the columns don’t foul the tracks when the door opens.
The Davenport buyer had a 16-foot door opening and 22 feet of depth. That was plenty for the columns to sit clear of the door tracks and for a full-size sedan to pull past the columns before centering. His overhead door tracks came down along the ceiling at the sides of the door opening, which meant the columns had to be set inside those tracks. We laid the columns out with a chalk line during the site survey. Slab thickness and quality
His residential slab was four inches poured in the 1990s, and we cored a corner to verify the mix quality. It came back at approximately 3,500 PSI, which is a workable rating for a two-post if the anchor spec is upsized. We specified longer wedge anchors and did a pull test on the first one before setting the columns. It held, and we proceeded with confidence. If the pull test had failed, we’d have stopped and had a conversation about pouring a lift pad or switching to a four-post storage lift.
Some Davenport buyers have older slabs poured over questionable subgrade, and those slabs occasionally fail the pull test. We would rather stop the install and switch configurations than push a lift onto a slab that can’t safely hold it. Electrical service in an older residential garage
Older residential garages often have 60-amp or 100-amp service, which limits how much lift-dedicated draw is available. The Davenport buyer had 100 amps with some headroom, and we specified a 30-amp double-pole breaker for the lift and confirmed the total load calculation with his electrician. If the house service had been maxed out, we’d have quoted a subpanel upgrade before the lift install. That’s an important conversation to have early, because subpanel work adds a real chunk of cost and lead time.
We also walked him through outlet placement for tool power. On a two-post install we typically add a couple of 20-amp outlets at the column base for impact wrenches, work lights, and other accessories. His electrician added them at the same time as the lift drop, which is the cheapest way to do it. Configuration decision: baseplate versus overhead
With a 9’5 clear-to-obstruction ceiling, an overhead two-post was borderline. Some overhead configurations want 11 feet, others as low as 10’6. A baseplate configuration eliminates the overhead crossbar entirely and can install in as low as 9 feet of clearance. The tradeoff is that baseplate hoses run along the floor between the columns, which is a minor cable-management annoyance but works fine in a home garage. We specced a baseplate configuration for the Davenport buyer’s ceiling.
He asked whether the baseplate would affect his transmission drop. It doesn’t, because the baseplate is below the vehicle and the vehicle is up in the air. The only impact is that hoses run along the floor between the columns, which the buyer needs to walk around. He was fine with that tradeoff, and the baseplate gave him the maximum working height under the vehicle. Install day and the first transmission job
The install ran a single long day. We uncrated, verified the slab with a coring, laid out the anchor pattern with a chalk line, drilled and set the anchors, set the columns, plumbed the power unit on the passenger column, ran hoses along the floor between the columns, installed the arms, and cycled the lift dry. By evening he had a working lift with a certification sheet. Two weeks later he called to say he’d dropped the transmission in his project car in a single Saturday afternoon.
That single job saved him weeks of jack-stand work and paid for a meaningful piece of the lift on time savings alone. He’s since done a clutch job, a rear-differential fluid service, and a full exhaust replacement on the same lift.
